Here is a re-post of something I posted last spring, with a few additional tidbits added. Maybe someone will see some links this time around. These people must have some descendents somewhere! Hello fellow researchers, I am tracing several ONEILL families who were mainly in Paterson NJ, some maybe as early as 1830s. Some family members lived in Newark, Jersey City, Allendale and Morris Co. NJ as well as Paterson. John & Charles ONEILL were building materials and coal suppliers in Paterson and Jersey City. They had ads in both city directories in 1850s. I think the same families ran both businesses. Several other ONEILLs in Paterson were merchants of various kinds. One was mayor of Jersey City and had a summer home in Allendale NJ. There is a large ONEILL plot in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Paterson/Totowa. ONEILL names there include Charles (b. Ireland abt 1802, d. 1891) and wife Margaret (b. Ireland abt 1804, d. 1891) John and Susan (rest on stone is unreadable, unfortunate because it seems to be giving townland and county in Ireland) Thomas E. and Ellen (dates hard to read) 3 young ONEILL children - Thomas E., Agnes, Esther Other surnames in plot: KANE, DONOVAN (includes WINTER and RITGER surnames), AGNEW (includes DONNELLY, MANLEY and CARDINAL surnames). I'm interested in these ONEILLS in Paterson because of their connection to my CAVANAGH family. At least 3 marriages occurred between the ONEILLs and CAVANAGHs in Paterson NJ: 25Dec1855 Owen O'NEILL 30, son of Felix, marble polisher,Paterson and Ann CAVANAGH 24,dau of Daniel, married by S S Rev. D. Senez [Catholic], Paterson [LDS film 0493694 index marr Passaic Co 1848-64: bride & groom A-Z, p.87] In 1860 and 1870, they were living in Newark NJ; in 1900, in Chatham, Morris Co. NJ. 8Jan1860 Stephen KAVANAGH & Ellen O'NEILL, both single, m. by Rev F. Beaudwin [Catholic] of Paterson; Stephen - painter, son of Daniel & Ellen; Ellen - age 22, dau of Bernard & Elizabeth. abt 1870 William H. ONEILL, son of Bernard and Elizabeth, married Margaret CAVANAGH [listed as daughter of John CAVANAGH and Ellen LOWRY on her death certificate, but I'm not sure that her mother's last name is correct]. I was not able to locate their marriage record in Paterson records or in the statewide index to NJ marriages. MORE INFO ON ONEILLs MENTIONED ABOVE ------------------------------------ Bernard ONEILL's first wife was Elizabeth VAN BLARCOM, daughter of John and Letitia (Lettie) VAN BLARCOM. She died 2 March 1860. Bernard then married Jane WADE on 1 Oct 1860 in Paterson. Bernard was 38, the son of John and Susan O'NEILL, according to the marriage record. He ran a store that sold books, stationery, newspapers, office supplies, etc. Bernard died 27 Jan 1880. His will listed his children: Ellen (wife of Samuel COULTER - see below), Josephine, William H., Susan and Charles A. ONEILL; it named his wife Catharine J.[Jane] ONEILL and brother John ONEILL as executors. The will of the Charles ONEILL who died 1891 named beloved wife Margaret; daughters Ellen and Esther ONEILL; son Thomas E. ONEILL; granddaughters Margaret and Susan DONOVAN; daughter Susan AGNEW and her son Charles A. AGNEW; children and heirs at law of "my beloved daughter, Mary DONOVAN, deceased": Matthew, Margaret, Susan, John C. and Julia DONOVAN; widow Margaret ONEILL and children of son John ONEILL deceased, namely Theresa KELLY, Margaret A. ONEILL, Mary HAMILTON; daughter Catherine J. SHARKEY; daughter Martha KANE; daughter Theresa A. ONEILL; executors: sons Charles H. ONEILL and Thomas E. ONEILL, daughter Ellen ONEILL, and trusted friend Reverend William McNULTY [pastor of St. John's Catholic Church, Paterson]; witnesses: William J. ST. LAWRENCE, Josephine ST. LAWRENCE. Stephen CAVANAGH/KAVANAGH died in Paterson 20 Apr 1876 at age 35. Three years later on 24 Apr 1879, his widow Ellen ONEILL married Samuel COULTER. Don't know what happened to either of them... If anyone has a connection to any of these families, I'd like to hear from you. Geralyn Wood Barry [email protected]
