I am requesting: 1. Magner / Magnier / Sweeney / Sheehan names listed in City Directories for Paterson, NJ, and or the surrounding Towns 1895-96 thru 1906. I have no idea what Towns were existing late 1800's 2. Orbit information for Magner / Magnier in the Paterson Area, late 1895-96 3. Census Enumeration District (1890-1900) Numbers, or LDS, Film Numbers, for the area of Paterson & vicinity. Background for my Request for Information Elizabeth (Sweeney) Magner Abt 1839-1896 also called Beth, & Eliza Husband, John Magner Born: Abt 1802, died: February 8,1884, Rockmills, Kildorrery, Cork, Ireland 1884 Immigration, June 16, 1884, s/s England, Elizabeth from County Cork, Ireland to Castle Gardens, NY, traveling with a 10 year old girl, Katie Sheehan, who we suspect is Elizabeth's Step-Grandaughter from John's previous marriage. 1885 New Jersey Census: page 73, number 2190, 236 Erie Street, Jersey City age 20-60 Elizabeth Magner, widow of John. (Katie Sheehan is not listed in this census) living with her son Thomas Magner 1885-1886 listed in Gospel's City Directory for 236 Erie Street, Jersey City, NJ, Elizabeth Magner living with son Thomas Magner. 1886-1887 Elizabeth Magner not listed in Gospel's City Directory for Jersey City, NJ 1889 City Directory of Bridgeport, CT. Page 285, Eliza Magner, widow of John, bds 90 Bank 1891-1895 City Directory of Bridgeport, CT. 1896 City Directory of Bridgeport, CT. Page 238 lists: Magner Eliza, widow of John, removed to Paterson, NJ Re-Located to Paterson, NJ 1896 Dates were obtained from a hand written Journal kept by Elizabeth's first born Son Thomas Magner "Mother died Sunday January 12th 1896" and "Mother buried January 14, 1896" We suspect that Elizabeth was living with family members in Connecticut and was in failing health. She relocated to Paterson, NJ or a Town very near Paterson to stay with other Family Members. Do to new information, we now believe Elizabeth died and is buried in the Paterson area. I have today sent a new request to The State of New Jersey requesting a record search for the Paterson area. Thomas Magner, son of John Magner Immigrated May 7, 1880 on the SS/Grease, Castle Garden, NY. Also listed as Passengers onboard that Ship, are John Magner age 30 (so born about 1850) and David Magner age 20 (so born about 1860). We have no idea who these Magner's were, if they are related to Thomas or where they settled in the USA, but we suspect Family connections. My Grandfather John Thomas Magner 1883-1966 (Son of Thomas) was born and raised in Jersey City. When John married April 1903, he moved and worked in the Paterson area for about three years before returning to Jersey City. We suspect John obtained a job opportunity from a Family Member living in the Paterson area. Thanks Jim Magner [email protected]

Nearly all my family has it's roots in Passaic County. I am hoping that this list will help me further my research. My grandparent's Walter Scott Symons married Helen Vivian Cubby on November 29,1916 in the home of Richard Cubby and Eliza (Sharpley)Cubby, on 39th Street, in Paterson. Richard Cubby was the son of Richard Cubby from Carlilse,Scotland, born Oct 19, 1827 and Sarah Flannigan from England, born Jan.1, 1821. I know that the younger Richard Cubby was a fireman on the Paterson Fire Department during the time of the big fire of 1902. His brother Christopher Cubby was the Captain of the department. Any information on these families would be appreciated. Thanks, Cathleen Symons Larson

Hi Passiac Co. List-- I need some help with finding a death record for my great-grandmother, Sarah Frances (Fanny) RUTAN POST. She was born in West Milford township, Passaic Co., NJ in 1856, the daughter of Peter RUTAN and Hester LONGWELL RUTAN (both of whom I believe were born in Vernon township, Sussex Co.). She married Isaac POST 12/5/1877, whom she grew up next door to about halfway between West Milford and Newfoundland. She had two children, Nelson Post and Alice Post Kimble Hough--my grandmother. She is supposed to have died when my grandmother was two years old, which would be in the 1889-1890 time frame. I've just returned from a whirlwind search of the death records from Passaic County for that time period at the NJ Archives in Trenton, NJ and did not find a death record for the time period 1889-1896. I've not yet searched in any other counties for her death record because her husband stayed in the West Milford-Newfoundland area of NJ all of his life. Fanny Post is buried with her husband, parents and son in the old Methodist Cemetery in Newfoundland, West Milford Township; only her name is on the stone--no birth or death dates. I appreciate any thoughts anyone might have on how to find a death record for this mystery lady. I will be posting this to a couple of the NJ regional lists so I apologize if you receive this more than once. Thanks for reading my epistle! Best Regards, Marilyn Hough Stern (researching my northeastern roots from the hot southwest)

This may be not exactly what you are looking for on trolley cars, but maybe helpful by way of history, or a name or two: June 7, 1897 newspaper clipping (Passaic): TROLLEY ROAD TO LODI To be built by Ex-Mayor Bogart and Michael F. Burns Ex-Mayor Bogart of Garfield and Michael F. Burns decided to build an extention of the Paterson railway's trolley lines over the Garfield bridge and along the main street of Garfield to a point near the Catholic cemetery, where it will turn off through the Rennie farm, cross the Saddle River near the silk mill and terminate on the main street of Lodi in front of the residence of Mayor Mercer. They expect to begin the preliminaries to-day or to-morrow. The new Newark, Rutherford and Hackensack line of the Union traction Co. will pass within a mile of Mayor Mercer's on the Polify road, and may run a spur to connect with the extention from Passaic. The extension will cost $35,000 to $40,000, but it will probably pay. (My note: Back then, Passaic and Paterson were closely related when reporting news.) Does anyone have information about a Labash Funeral Home (I believe Monroe St. Passaic)? Are they still in business --- who might have their records. I have reason to believe that they handled my maternal-great grandfather's funeral in 1926. Would love to know more. Hi Maisie Ann: If you get no response for your request for a researcher, perhaps you might find some success with the Morristown NJ library. They do have a number of Paterson directories on fiche or film and are more adequately staffed. I wish time allowed me to do your search for I spend time at least once a month in Morristown. The Paterson library is pretty much in shambles and grossly understaffed, plus it is not in the most desireable district. If you are looking for someone in the silk industry of the 1800s, I might be able to help. If not, I at least can keep the name in my file in the event something turns up. Good luck. Kind regards, Myra E. VREELAND Lane
Does anyone know of researcher (need not be a professional genealogist but someone familiar with library research) that will go to Paterson Public Library to do some lookups in city directories and newspapers? I expect to pay for the searches. I have contacted the library but the researcher there says the staff is not adequate enough to take on much research work, so decided to look for someone else who might have the time. Hello to all... Does anyone have any photos or information about the Paterson trolleys and the great Paterson fire around the turn of the century? My g-grandfather, (Henry McKenzie), was a trolley conductor, and he was supposedly stuck on the wrong side of Paterson because the fire blocked the way home. The way it turns out, he lived right across the street (E. Main St) from what I believe was the trolley depot which is where, (I think), the fire started. I also believe that the trolley company later became part of Public Service (bus company?). Does that company still exist in Paterson? If so, do you think that they still might have personnel records? (Just thought of that while writing this!). I have one photo of my g-grandfather (I think it's him, at least), and I was hoping to confirm that fact... with a photo of the trolleys, conductors, fire???? I know..., I'm really looking at a long shot! I don't have any other idea how I might get confirmation. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Looking for info on David W. Davis who lived at 89 Franklin St., Hawthorne, in 1944; married to Olive Matilda Koar. Believe they moved to Florida, but not certain. Anyone know this family? [email protected] Hudson, OH
Jason, I have received photocopies of tombstone transcriptions for this church from: Joan DeYoung Oakridge Cemetery 321 Oakridge Road Box 302 Oakridge, NJ 07438 Her source is: "Inscriptions from the tombstones in the Oak Ridge Presbyterian Chruch Cemetery...Copied in 1946 by William H Mecabe,...Watertown, Connecticut." There is an index and she copied occurrences of the names I was seeking (ECKHAR(D)T, POST, PULIS). There is no specific fee, but donations are accepted for cemetery maintenance (mowing, flowers, etc.). I am not sure if there were church records that also could be searched (records of burials). Apparently, I neglected to ask that at the time! BLAUVELTs were witnesses at PULIS christenings, so there is some connection, if only neighbors or friends. Let me know if discover anything about my names in connections with yours. Hope this helps. --Noelle ____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________ At 12:41 AM 6/27/98 EDT, [email protected] wrote: >Hello... > >Does anyone have access to the records for Oakridge Presbytierian Church >Cemetery records? > >I believe my ancestors Peter Decker and Maria BLauvelt were buried there. Hello... Does anyone have access to the records for Oakridge Presbytierian Church Cemetery records? I believe my ancestors Peter Decker and Maria BLauvelt were buried there. I would like to see if any other Blauvelts and Deckers are buried there. Thank you, Jason Coffman
