    1. SMALLEY, SHEETS, COLEMAN, COMPTON, YAWGER,
    2. I am researching the following names in SOMERSET< MORRIS and surrounding counties. SMALLEY, SHEETS, COLEMAN, YAWGER, PACE, COMPTON and VANCE. Great-Grandfather James SMALLEY was born to Samuel SMALLEY and Emily (?) SMALLEY Dec. of 1849 or Jan. of 1850. He was found on the 1850 US Census in Bedminster Twsp., Somerset Co., N.J. but no birth record can be found. His brother Edward SMALLEY was born October 30th 1847 in Bernards Twsp., Somerset County, New Jersey. Sister Lauretta SMALLEY was born September 18th, 1857 in Bernards Twsp, Somerset Co., New Jersey. I have no info as to who the parents of Samuel SMALLEY or Emily (?) are so any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. According to the 1850 US Census, Samuel SMALLEY would have been born about 1824 in New Jersey and Emily would have been born about 1827 in New Jersey. Samuel may have been the son of William SMALLEY and William may have been the son of David SMALLEY and Margaret COMPTON but I have no proof of this. However, these people were all shown living in Bernards Twsp. on the 1840 & 1850 Census records. James married Harriet C. SHEETS,daughter of Jacob W. SHEETS and Anne (COLEMAN) SHEETS 13 June, 1874 at Mendham, Morris Co. Grandfather, Charles Frederick SMALLEY born 25 March, 1876 at Somerset, Morris Co. I know they started west in 1878 and I found them on the 1880 U.S. Census in Eight Mile Grove, Cass Co., Nebraska. From there they went to Hay Springs, Nebraska where they homesteaded till 1891. In 1891 they moved to South Dakota where James was employed as "Boss Farmer" on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation till 1906. James then helped found the town of Interior, SD and for many years operated a general store and was post master for several years. Harriet was the daughter of Jacob W. SHEETS & Ann COLEMAN. Her brothers and sisters are: Emily b. Abt 1838, Lambert b. 3 April 1844, Lemuel b. 24 June 1848, & Ann b. 10 December, 1854. Harriet was born May, 1851. She was more or less raised by older sister Emily & husband John F. YAWGER & grew up with her nieces & nephews: Addie b. Abt. 1860 married John F. HORSFALL, Frederick b. Abt 1861, Minnie b. Abt 1864, Harry b. Abt 1873, Daisy b. Abt 1873 married Alfred Halstead COMPTON, Clara born Abt 1877 married Woodruff M. VANCE, and John born Abt 1881.

The mule worked well but was almost totally deaf. So, when his owner yelled, "Whoa!", the animal often continued plowing. Asked how the mule was working out, O'Leary shook his head. "There was a time," he said, "when all the neighbors could hear was me singing my lilting melodies. Lately, I'm afraid, they've heard nothing but ... my riled Irish whoa's!" --part0_903935735_boundary--

The best day to go is on Tuesday from 10:00am till 3:00pm as that is the day when the volunteers are their. They have a large selection of Paterson History. George Van Riper

If he owned the business, but not the property, there still might be some documents recorded. This would involve a visit to the administration building in Paterson or hiring a searcher Lorraine [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Friday, August 21, 1998 10:56 AM Subject: Where can I find... >Hello all! >I was wondering if someone could tell me how to go about finding any >information on a tavern my great grandfather owned in Paterson. 1. Where can I find...
    2. Hello all! I was wondering if someone could tell me how to go about finding any information on a tavern my great grandfather owned in Paterson. This is the info I have to go on: His name was Harry Carroll and he owned a bar he called "Carroll's Tavern" off Grand Street in Paterson maybe around the early 1930s. He sold the bar to a man named Nick Miran and Nick later sold the bar to Harry's oldest son Bill Carroll. That is all I have. Where could I begin to look?? I live in Florida, so leg work wouldn't be an option until my next visit around Christmas time. Is there someone I could write to about this? Would the library hold any documents that I would be able to consult their research department about? Thank you for any suggestions! Melanie Carroll Portilla

    1. Passaic River Falls
    2. Hello everyone! Does anyone know anything about the Biograph Movie Company's filming days at the Passaic River Falls? I was told that Lambert Castle Museum may have some information on this, but I have yet to receive a response from them (it's been 3 1/2 months). My great grandfather, Harry Judson Carroll, was a stunt man with Biograph in Paterson and I would like to find any records that still exist on him or their filming days in Paterson. I have already contacted the Biograph Movie Company and they can't give me any information without the names of the movies filmed there. I have also had the Paterson Library look up any information on this and all they came up with was the mention of the movie company in Harry's obituary in 1938. Can anyone think of anywhere else for me to look for these records? Thanks in advance! Melanie Carroll Portilla

    2. Hello, again! Does anyone know if a Preakness or Preakness Reformed Church still exists in Passaic County, New Jersey? Are there any records in existence? If so, how can I request copies? 1. GARSIDE/TAYLOR
    2. Hello, Passaic County! I am new to this list and to genealogical research, so please be understanding and correct me if i err! Last week I received the death certificate of my Edith E. GARSIDE PRENTISS. She was born on January 20, 1883 in Paterson, Passaic Co., NJ. Her parents were John GARSIDE (only know he was deceased before 1937) and Sarah C. TAYLOR GARSIDE (born January 6, 1862 in Monticello, NY and died September 21, 1951 in Kansas City, MO). I mailed a request today to New Jersey State Department of Health for Edith's birth record. Has anyone had any luck with getting birth certifications for this time period (1883)? How long does it usually take? Edith married my Harry Seargent PRENTISS on December 26, 1904 in Missouri (probably Jefferson County or St. Louis County since Harry was from DeSoto, Jefferson County, and graduated from medical school in St. Louis in 1904). So, the GARSIDE family was probably in Missouri in 1900. I haven't found them yet on a census. They moved to Kansas City in about 1911. I have also found a land grant in Callaway Co., MO for an Abram GARSIDE signed on June 10, 1857. However, an Abram GARSIDE appears in Passaic Co., Wayne Twp., NJ in the 1860 census index. I don't have any further census indices to see where they (they TAYLORs and GARSIDEs) are in 1870 and beyond. I have found on census index the following: Abraham GARSIDE in 1828 (Bergen Co., Paterson City - no page # or E.D. given), Abraham GARSIDE in 1829 (Bergen Co., Paterson City - no page # or E.D. given), Abraham GARSIDE in 1830 (Essex Co., Acquackanonk Twp - Page #401), Abraham GARSIDE in 1840 (Passaic Co., Paterson Twp. - Page #046), Then John GARSIDE in 1850 (Passaic Co., Acquackanonk Twp - Page #351), and Sarah GARSIDE (Passaic Co., Paterson Twp - Page #223), and William GARSIDE (Essex Co., N. Ward - Page #093). Abram GARSIDE in 1860 (Passaic Co., Wayne Twp - Page #599), and Benjamin GARSIDE (Passaic Co., 5 W. Paterson - Page #449), and Lees GARSIDE (Passaic Co., West W.Paterson Ci - Page #815), and Thomas GARSIDE (Passaic Co., 5 W. Paterson - Page #450). I would like to get the pages of these Census Reports. Does anyone know how I can find out who the other members of these families are and/or where to get the copies of the pages? Also, are all of these counties and townships the same place or very close to each other? Also, today I received the death certificate Sarah C. TAYLOR GARSIDE. It states that she was born in Monticello, Sullivan County, Thompson Township, New York. She was born on January 6, 1862 to Unknown TAYLOR and his Unknown wife. I am also trying to find out if they were still in Monticello, NY in 1870 and 1880, or if they had moved to New Jersey (Paterson, Passiaic Co.) where she (Sarah TAYLOR) apparently met and married John GARSIDE and had Edith on January 20, 1883. TAYLOR is such a common name for me to "guess" at Sarah's ancestors, although I did find a Crispin TAYLOR in Passaic Co, Wayne Twp in 1850 (page #153). However, in 1860 the only Crispin TAYLOR in the index is in Philadelphia Co., PA. I did find four TAYLOR families on a census index for 1850 in Sullivan Co., Thompson Twp., NY. 1) David TAYLOR, page #041, 2) Mary TAYLOR, page #044, 3) Phebe TAYLOR, page #033, and 4) Samuel TAYLOR, page #042. And, I have found two TAYLOR families on a census index for 1860 in Sullivan Co., Thompson Twp., NY. 1) Mary W. TAYLOR, page #078, and 2) Alexander TAYLOR, page #085. Again, I do not have access to an index for 1870 or 1880, so I am trying to find out if they were in Monticello, NY or if the TAYLORs had moved to New Jersey (Paterson, Passiaic Co.) where she (Sarah TAYLOR) apparently met and married John GARSIDE and had Edith on January 20, 1883. I would appreciate any help or advice since I am not at all familiar with researching in the New York/New Jersey areas. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Sorry this got so long, but I'm at a loss as to how to tackle this since I am not in that area! Patty Frazer [email protected] St. Louis, MO, USA

    1. Looking for...
    2. Hello! I am researching the following names in Passaic Co.: Frederick TAYLOR and Martha HARRISON came to Paterson from England c. 1890 with their only child, Edith Ann Taylor (b.1882 in Coventry, England). William CARROLL and Sarah A.? lived in Greenpond, NJ when their son Harry Judson was born in 1882. Harry had two brothers I have found - William H. and Frederick. The family moved to Paterson where Harry attended Public School No. 5. Harry was a stuntman for the Biograph Movie Company. He died in 1938. Anacleto DEBLASIO (b.1894 in Italy) and Pasqualena PIZZA (b.1895 in Italy) lived in Paterson with their five girls: Catherine, Florence, Sarah, Dolores, and Gina. Anacleto's parents were Carlo DEBLASIO and Catherine PENQUE. They came to the US from Italy in c.1913 and settled in Hackensack, NJ. Pasqualena's parents were Frank PIZZA and Sarah?. They also came to the US from Italy in c.1913 and settled in Hackensack, NJ. I have more information on each family if needed. Does anyone share these surnames??? Melanie Carroll Portilla

    3. Hi, This is a message to those people who are researching the surnames BOWER[S], BAUER[S], and their variant spellings. . . I want to let you know that I've opened a website called the Bower Family Homestead at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Park/4501 . It's dedicated solely to the BOWER[S], BAUER[S], etc. surnames worldwide and although rather small now, will have lots of goodies for BOWER researchers. I invite you to drop in and look around, perhaps even sign my guestbook, or leave a message to let me know how I'm doing or if you'd like to contribute to the Homestead. If you have a BOWER-[or variant spelling] related webpage and would like to link to the Bower Family Homestead, please let me know. In return, I'll establish a link to yours. Also, I've begun a BOWER mailing list. You can join at the Homestead, or send an email to [email protected] and put the word subscribe on the top line of the message part of your email. I hope you'll join us. Colleen Pustola [email protected]
