SCHMIDT/SMITH Henry & Jacob; NJ > NY; 1770- Q. Who were the ancestors of Henry and Sarah (EMERICH/EMERY) SCHMIDT/SMITH? 1. Henry SCHMIDT/SMITH, b. NJ ca. 1772 [7 April 1773?]; d. Lansing, Tompkins County, NY 1 Oct 1855; m. 18 Dec [1796] to Sarah EMERICH/EMERY, b. NJ ca. 1777 [15 November 1775?]; d. Lansing, Tompkins County, NY 9 or 10 August 1865. It appears probable that Jacob SMITH was Henry's and Sarah's eldest son; this may be a valuable clue towards finding either one of their fathers. It should be noted that a John EMERY was b. in Covert, Seneca County, NY on 1 October 1832 to Jacob and Julia (COOK) EMERY. Perhaps Jacob EMERY was a brother or other close kinsman to Sarah (EMERY) SMITH. Children, uncertain parentage indicated by square brackets: i. [Mary, b. [NJ?] ca. 1798; d. 4 Oct 1872; m. Joel BAKER, b. ca. 1796, d. 16 May 1876.] ii. Jacob, b. [NJ?] [say 1799]; d. 8 Oct 1863. iii. Elizabeth "Betsey," b. (then Milton, now) Lansing, NY 11 Feb 1800 as "Elisabeth," dau. of Henry SCHMIDT and Sara EMERICH; baptismal sponsors John CONRAD and Susanna BAUER (The Church Book of the Evangelical United Congregations in Milton and Scipio [hereinafter EUC] [1803]); b. 11 Feb 1799; d. 9 April 1881 "aged 82 years and 29 days"; m. Daniel YOUNG, b. 9 April 1800, d. 9 Feb 1868. iv. John, b. (then Milton, now) Lansing, NY 9 Nov 1801 (EUC); bapt. 19 May 1803 as son of Henry SCHMIDT and Sara EMERICH (EUC); b. ca. 1802; d. 13 Nov 1831 or 13 Dec 1832 "age 30 years." v. Sara "Sally," b. (then Milton, now) Lansing, NY 29 Jan 1804; bapt. (then Milton, now) Lansing, NY 21 Feb 1804 as dau. of Henry SCHMIDT and Sara EMERICH (EUC). Sally is a nickname for Sarah. vi. Does anyone know if there are internet listings for either the Pompton Reformed Cemetery in Pompton Lakes, NJ or the Preakness Cemetery in Wayne, NJ? Also, the surnames I am interested in are: BLAUVELT, FREDERICKS, STORMS, FOLLY OR FOLLEY, BANVARD AND LARKIN. If anyone has any information on the above, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Jean Morris

Good day to all, Right after the holidays, we will be moving to Murphy, NC (mostly during summer months in the future). We are going to build a castle... yes, a castle, and develop the 26 acres we purchased this year and call it "Scottish Woods". The castle will be a "Bed & Breakfast" as well as a "time-share" resort... anyway, this really is not meant to be an "advertisement" for the future resort, it's to secure genealogy information for the castle genealogical reference library. To "cut to the chase" as they say, each suite in the castle, "Castle McKenzie", will be named after a Scottish Clan, and decorated accordingly. The reason for this message is that we will be very heavily involved with promoting the genealogy of each of those clan names, etc. and plan to have a library in the great room of the castle dedicated to genealogy and research, etc. Here's the offer... Anyone wishing to submit their genealogy information, family tree, books, articles, etc. to us, will have it included in the appropriate Clan section of the castle library. At this time, we are only going to accept "hard copy" (printed) material as the information will be in "book" form on the shelves for visitors' review and research. (We will probably computerize much of the reference information in the future). At present, only the Clan names listed will be represented by the B&B suites, but we are planning to offer cabins or cottages for sale/rent with other Clan names in phase two of the project, so all Clan name submittals are welcome. I'm sorry we are limiting the information to "Scottish Clans", but that being the theme of the resort, it just makes sense, and will keep the project more manageable. These are the Clans that will be represented with castle suites: Bruce, Burns, Campbell, Graham, Johnson, MacCrae, MacDonald, MacGregor, MacKenzie, MacLeod, Morgan, Stewart and Wallace. All spellings should be included... (Mc as well as Mac; Johnson, Johnston, Johnstone, etc. and appropriate Clan Septs) Please send your information to: John McKenzie Panagos Olde World Enterprises, Inc. P.O. Box 3603 Port Charlotte, FL 33949 I thank you for your assistance in this matter, and look forward to possibly meeting you some day in the reference library of the castle. We plan to have the library open to the public for genealogy research purposes. Best regards, and keep searching... John McKenzie Panagos John McKenzie Panagos Olde World Entrprises, Inc. I agree that you have to be creative when searching names. At the NJ Archives recently, I found a marriage record indexed under "H" when it should have been "N." On the actual handwritten record, the "N", indeed, did look like an "H." The only reason I found it was that I was looking under maiden name of the wife. Lorraine [email protected]
Listers: when searching for ancestors, one never knows where the ancestors might be in a census, so passing this along as a reminder that one should look everywhere. While searching the 1905 STATE OF NEW JERSEY (not federal) Census in Paterson, I noticed a page title "LIVING IN BOXCARS"..IT WAS THE SECOND DISTRICT, 11TH WARD...at least #51-100 on p. 17....there may be more pages, I didn't note how many pages for sure....all were immigrants from Italy. So if you are having a hard time finding someone from Italy who you believed to have been in Paterson by that year, you might check this listing. Some immigrants had a very hard time getting started; often the men cam alone because of the hardships to be faced when starting a new life. [email protected] Hudson, OH
Here is a re-post of something I posted last spring, with a few additional tidbits added. Maybe someone will see some links this time around. These people must have some descendents somewhere! Hello fellow researchers, I am tracing several ONEILL families who were mainly in Paterson NJ, some maybe as early as 1830s. Some family members lived in Newark, Jersey City, Allendale and Morris Co. NJ as well as Paterson. John & Charles ONEILL were building materials and coal suppliers in Paterson and Jersey City. They had ads in both city directories in 1850s. I think the same families ran both businesses. Several other ONEILLs in Paterson were merchants of various kinds. One was mayor of Jersey City and had a summer home in Allendale NJ. There is a large ONEILL plot in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Paterson/Totowa. ONEILL names there include Charles (b. Ireland abt 1802, d. 1891) and wife Margaret (b. Ireland abt 1804, d. 1891) John and Susan (rest on stone is unreadable, unfortunate because it seems to be giving townland and county in Ireland) Thomas E. and Ellen (dates hard to read) 3 young ONEILL children - Thomas E., Agnes, Esther Other surnames in plot: KANE, DONOVAN (includes WINTER and RITGER surnames), AGNEW (includes DONNELLY, MANLEY and CARDINAL surnames). I'm interested in these ONEILLS in Paterson because of their connection to my CAVANAGH family. At least 3 marriages occurred between the ONEILLs and CAVANAGHs in Paterson NJ: 25Dec1855 Owen O'NEILL 30, son of Felix, marble polisher,Paterson and Ann CAVANAGH 24,dau of Daniel, married by S S Rev. D. Senez [Catholic], Paterson [LDS film 0493694 index marr Passaic Co 1848-64: bride & groom A-Z, p.87] In 1860 and 1870, they were living in Newark NJ; in 1900, in Chatham, Morris Co. NJ. 8Jan1860 Stephen KAVANAGH & Ellen O'NEILL, both single, m. by Rev F. Beaudwin [Catholic] of Paterson; Stephen - painter, son of Daniel & Ellen; Ellen - age 22, dau of Bernard & Elizabeth. abt 1870 William H. ONEILL, son of Bernard and Elizabeth, married Margaret CAVANAGH [listed as daughter of John CAVANAGH and Ellen LOWRY on her death certificate, but I'm not sure that her mother's last name is correct]. I was not able to locate their marriage record in Paterson records or in the statewide index to NJ marriages. MORE INFO ON ONEILLs MENTIONED ABOVE ------------------------------------ Bernard ONEILL's first wife was Elizabeth VAN BLARCOM, daughter of John and Letitia (Lettie) VAN BLARCOM. She died 2 March 1860. Bernard then married Jane WADE on 1 Oct 1860 in Paterson. Bernard was 38, the son of John and Susan O'NEILL, according to the marriage record. He ran a store that sold books, stationery, newspapers, office supplies, etc. Bernard died 27 Jan 1880. His will listed his children: Ellen (wife of Samuel COULTER - see below), Josephine, William H., Susan and Charles A. ONEILL; it named his wife Catharine J.[Jane] ONEILL and brother John ONEILL as executors. The will of the Charles ONEILL who died 1891 named beloved wife Margaret; daughters Ellen and Esther ONEILL; son Thomas E. ONEILL; granddaughters Margaret and Susan DONOVAN; daughter Susan AGNEW and her son Charles A. AGNEW; children and heirs at law of "my beloved daughter, Mary DONOVAN, deceased": Matthew, Margaret, Susan, John C. and Julia DONOVAN; widow Margaret ONEILL and children of son John ONEILL deceased, namely Theresa KELLY, Margaret A. ONEILL, Mary HAMILTON; daughter Catherine J. SHARKEY; daughter Martha KANE; daughter Theresa A. ONEILL; executors: sons Charles H. ONEILL and Thomas E. ONEILL, daughter Ellen ONEILL, and trusted friend Reverend William McNULTY [pastor of St. John's Catholic Church, Paterson]; witnesses: William J. ST. LAWRENCE, Josephine ST. LAWRENCE. Stephen CAVANAGH/KAVANAGH died in Paterson 20 Apr 1876 at age 35. Three years later on 24 Apr 1879, his widow Ellen ONEILL married Samuel COULTER. Don't know what happened to either of them... If anyone has a connection to any of these families, I'd like to hear from you. Geralyn Wood Barry [email protected]
Hi Passaic Co. Researchers, Things are moving rather slowly again here, so I thought I'd list some of the surnames I'm researching in Paterson. I am also going to repost a message on ONEILL-CAVANAUGH the I posted last May, in case anyone new to the list is researching these families. Also will post one on the MERREY family. In many cases, I am researching ALL families in Paterson with these surnames (certainly true for the 4 main surnames). For the others, I may have lots or only limited information, such as a family story that mentions a relationship or a census listing or marriage record. The 4 main families below were from Ireland originally, but the related families were of other origins as well as Irish. CAVANAGH / CAVANAUGH (in Paterson from 1840s), related families: CONDON (related families KEHOE, SISCO), DULLARD/DOLLARD, DUNPHY, FANNING (related family TRACEY), KEYES/KEYS/KAYS (related family CULLETON/COLLISON), MERREY (related families MAGOON, MURPHY), O'NEILL (also in Jersey City and Allendale, related families AGNEW, COULTER, DUGAN, FOLEY, STAPLETON), RISK (related families BEARDSLEY?, BURNS, COOK, DEMAREST, GILCHRIST, STREIHL?). FARRELL (in Paterson from abt 1870, relatives in Jersey City, may have lived in Albany NY area 1850-1870), related families: BYRNES/BURNS (related names GLASLIN, WALDINGER, WATSON), CONKLIN (related names GANNON, HENION; mainly in Allendale & HoHoKus NJ and Sloatsburg, Rockland Co. NY area), DEVINE/DIVINE, LAFRICAN, O'BRIEN, QUEENEY (also in Jersey City). HAROLD / HARROLD (in Paterson from abt 1850), related families: BARLOW (also of Detroit & Royal Oak MI, Tyler TX, St Louis MO, related family PEARCE/PEARSE/ PIERCE of Detroit & Royal Oak MI), BERGIN/BERGEN (related names ABBOTT, CLARK, FITZGERALD, HUGHES), CARR, FARRELL (different one from above), MAHAR/MAHER, MOILY/MOLLE? McKENNA (in Paterson from abt 1870, also in Brooklyn NY) related families: MEEHAN/MEAHAN, NUGENT, PULFORD (related families BISGOOD, STRATHEARN) Is anyone else researching these? John- here is the address for the NJ search service I found. http://www.njgrs.com/ I emailed them last wwekend and I haven't heard from them as of yet. Let me know how you make out . If any body else has used them or any other service , please post it ; I live on Maui , so a NJ based service would be very helpful , as 3 branches of my family are in NJ. Mahalo- Kevin
Hi Ronnie; My main source of Donohue info is a 1973 school report by a cousin I never met! John's obituary mentions no other family members besides his wife and children. Martin's wifes' name was Sarah McCarty and the report says he worked in the boiler room at Fireman's Insurance Co. The report says they left Ireland from Killarney. I e-mailed a NJ Genealogy service I found on the web for a search , but I haven't heard from them as yet. Kevin
I am seeking information on Martin Donohue and his descendents. Martin and his wife arrived from Ireland in the 1800's. Their son John Joseph married Angeline Aubin and is buried in the cemetery of the Holy Sepulcher in Paterson. Their son Leo was a Lt. in WWII in China with Claire Chenault. Mahalo- Kevin
