This is very important!!!! Please, please make our lives easier: When posting a query to GenConnect do not capitalize the first names, nor street addresses, etc. But DO capitalize all surnames in the message. Please, it makes Surname Helper index the surnames properly. Lets not have surnames of AND and SANDRA and DONNA. This makes the databases look like junk in my opinion. Diane Ward Sives
Thought this was very appropriate for this coming month. Please read. Diane -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Time for some patience, kindness and teaching Resent-Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 15:23:22 -0800 (PST) Resent-From: [email protected] Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 15:19:30 -0800 From: Cyndi Howells <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Hello all - Karen Isaacson and I have talked many times about how January effects our incoming e-mail flow. It is clearly a well-documented event now as we are already beginning to see it coming into play for the fourth-year running (since we first noted the phenomenon). I'm sure many of you will be seeing the same thing as List Owners and/or webmasters, so I thought I would pass on a bit of advice and food for thought. Each January we see a huge influx of newbies joining us online because Santa was generous and left a sparkling new computer under the tree. There are also many after-holidays sales which offer people the opportunity to purchase a snazzy new computer or modem. Many people get online for the first time and enthusiastically don their cyber-bikinis, hitting the surf with gusto. They are excited to be here and they are (much as we "oldbies" were) rightfully overwhelmed by all that there is to see and do. The language here is foreign to them. The technology is newer, fancier and zippier than they may have used in the past. And the way that we all participate in our giant, online genealogical society, while being very similar to offline groups, is still a bit different than they may be prepared for. In other words, it is a brave new world to them. I would like to put out a call to each of you to show these newbies that we are a friendly, welcoming and helpful group of online genealogists. To do so we all need to pitch in and show patience, understanding and kindness. We also need to put on our teaching caps and be prepared to show them the ropes. 1. Don't make assumptions. 2. Explain things in detail, include URLs and complete instructions. 3. Verify details and addresses before you send them to people. 4. Offer to help people privately via e-mail, off of the mailing lists. 5. Be prepared to explain things more than once, in more than one way. 6. Keep in mind that we were all new at one time. 7. Keep in mind that we all learn something new every day. There are several places online to which you can point newbies in order to help them learn about this new research venue. I have tried to make these easy to locate by setting up links on my site: Internet Stuff You Need To Know http://www.CyndisList.com/internet.htm Also be sure to point them to these basic starting places online: Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet http://www.CyndisList.com Your genealogical research portal onto the Internet RootsWeb http://www.RootsWeb.com See the RootsWeb Help Desk: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~help/index.htm Genealogy Resources on the Internet - Mailing Lists http://users.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html USGenWeb http://www.USGenWeb.org Good luck and successful surfing to everyone online - both newbies and oldbies, Cyndi ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Cyndi Howells Puyallup, Washington [email protected] Cyndi's List - Over 39,400 links in over 90 categories! http://www.CyndisList.com My Book: "Netting Your Ancestors - Genealogical Research on the Internet" http://www.CyndisList.com/netting.htm
Someone has asked a question about "what are GenConnect boards" The easiest way is to show you them in action: go to these URLs http://www.rootsweb.com/~njsussex http://www.rootsweb.com/~njpassai http://www.rootsweb.com/~njhudson Then look for the section that says GenConnect you will see one for the particular county and one for "unknown" NJ county. If you go to this URL, you will see a bunch of Surname boards and on them I have started up boards for each category. http://ackerman-1662.rootsweb.com/query.htm you will then see icons for obits, wills, deeds, bible records, pensions and bios. Click on one of them and you will be taken to a board where you can add to that particular category. I have already typed a bible record into the Ackerman board, also there are quite a bit of queries, i have also typed an obit in there also. Check them out and then you will understand a bit more about GenConnect. There should also be an icon that you can click on to go to the Main GenConnect web site. Diane Ward Sives
I have already Query Boards for the above three counties. I am contemplating starting the following additional boards for each county before I turn them over to their new owners. For each county I would start Wills Pensions Deeds Biographies Bible Records Obits I would like to know if you on the lists would place info on these boards. They are only vital if we all make a concerted effort to place items on these boards. Let me know what you think Diane Ward Sives
Might I remind everyone to place the surnames in their queries in all caps. This helps everyone be able to scan a message faster and find the surnames. Also, when posting to the GenConnect boards...please please put all surnames in CAPS..at least the ones in the messages. http://www.rootsweb.com/~njhudson http://www.rootsweb.com/~njpassai http://www.rootsweb.com/~njessex http://www.rootsweb.com/~njsussex Each of these pages have surname boards for GenConnect. Please use them to place your queries too. If you have a query about: Does anyone know what newspapers where in Jersey City in 1849? Then please put these types on the mailing lists. Use the surname query boards for your "brick walls" or other queries that you expect to stay there for some time. When you write a query, make sure that you do not thanks for the info and hoping to hear from you. Jane Doe [email protected] Please do not place this types of things in your queries on the GenConnect boards. This stuff is non-essential and multiply that times thousands and thousands of messages and you have wasted a lot of space on the servers. There is time enough to thank people when they have given you further info. Thanks for Cooperating in this matter Diane Ward Sives Current owner of these GenConnect Boards Thanks
Jeff: write to State Registrar--Search Unit, NJ State Dept of Health, CN-360, Trenton, NJ 08625. The fee for just a certificate of death is $4.00. For additional fee, the dept. should search for you between the years 1929 and 1936. Give all the info you have, like full name, date of birth, where born, county or city of death, if you know it. Ask for the additional fee required for extra years searched (I think it is $2.00 extra for every year searched, but not sure). Also, there are pros available in NJ who will do a search for you...it is cheaper than a trip to NJ!!... But you might have to spend a bit of money initiallyto get started. I'm having trouble getting into the PCHS webpage. Will someone pls provide their email address. Thank you. John Polhemus
My Great-great grandfather John JORDAN was police officer in Paterson, Passaic County, NJ from 1885 through 1900. Is there an archive in Passaic County where old police records are kept, and if so has anyone got an address or phone number for it? Thanks in advance. J. Jackson
HI, I am living in California and am trying to trace the roots of my family. MY great grandfather was an Italian immigrant that started the bus line in Paterson. His name was Michael Dorso. He sold the busline for about a million and bought a carnival just before the depression at which point he went bankrupt. I would like to trace my roots but I have not the faintest idea about where to start. I thought about getting a death certificate but I don't know the year he died. I just know that it was between 1929 and 1936. Any help or advice you could give me would be really helpful. Thank you for your time. I appreciate it. Sincerely JEffrey DOrso
Sandra, just a tad late. yes we do have an archives. go to http://www.rootsweb.com and look for the searches and then put in the mailing list name and you will be able to search the archives At 12:18 PM 10/19/98 -0400, Sandra Hart wrote: >Many of the lists have archives. I'm based in England, and although I'm quite used to researching here, I've now got a little information about a branch of the family who emigrated to Paterson, NJ. I have a death certificate for a relative who died in 1970, which gives me his date of birth and his parents names. How do I go about tracing a birth certificate for 1905 (and what extra information wil it give me) and the marriage of his parents between 1900 and 1905 ? Any guidance appreciated Adrian

Hi!! I'm looking for any info or help in trying to locate the Midvale Cemetery in Wanaque (?). Maybe someone has the address, or knows anything about it. It seems many of my family members are buried there. Maybe some one knows of a way to get info on those folks buried there..........DEGRAWS, RYERSONS, and possibly MATHEWS. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I have hit a dead end unless I can get some info from this cemetery. Thanks!! Linda Carroll Bifulco [email protected]
