Hello Philip and others on list, I don't have anything on the specific family (GARNIER) you asked about, but I do have a French connection to one of my Irish families in Paterson. I traced a family by the name of MOLLE, but failed to find any connection to my family. Perhaps this will be helpful to someone else on the list. William HARROLD (b. abt 1859 NJ, d. 22 Nov 1881 Paterson) was the son of William HARROLD and Judith/Julia FARRELL, both born Ireland. The younger William married Sarah __?__, who was born in France abt 1860. I'm still not sure what Sarah's last name was. I have never located a marriage record for them, but they must have married abt 1878. I have found Sarah's last name on only 2 records - the birth certs of her 2 children, both of whom died as infants. On one record, her surname is MOILY and on the other, MORTY. The only similar French name I could find in Paterson was MOLLE, so I traced the family of Joseph MOLLE. He first appeared in the Paterson City Directory in 1868 and Joseph Moll, silk weaver, h 62 Spring. In 1870, he was listed as Joseph Molle, saloon and weaver, 97 Slater, h do. and appeared in the 1870 census with his family on p.86/492, lines 27-30, 5th Ward Paterson (house #421, family #736): MOLLE Joseph, 40, M, Silk Weaver, personal estate $100, b. France; --- Mary, 32, F, Keeps House, b. France; --- Blanche, 4, F, at Home, b. NY; --- Camilla, 3, F, at Home, b. NJ. Sarah is obviously not with them. She would have been abt 10 years old in 1870. In the 1870s, Joseph also ran a boarding house called Molle House at 13 Green in Paterson. I followed this name in Paterson city directories and censuses til 1899. Joseph must have died abt 1887, then his wife appeared in late 1880s and early 1890s: Marie(or Mary) MOLLE, widow Joseph, h 128 5th ave. In 1895: Camille Molle, dyer, h 128 5th ave; in 1899: Charles Molle, helper, h 66 Market. Don't know if/how Charles was related to Joseph. If anyone is tracing this family or recognizes the Sarah who married William HARROLD, I'd like to hear from you. I have more on the MOLLE family... but could find no connection to Sarah. I also don't know exactly when Joseph MOLLE left France or where in France he came from, but his family was definitely French and associated with the silk industry in Paterson. Is anyone familiar with the immigration from Lyon, France to Paterson as a result of problems with silk manufacturing in Lyon? My great-grandfather, Francois Garnier, emigrated from Lyon ostensibly to work in Paterson's silk factories, although I believe he may never have. This was in the late 1800s. He died in 1958 or so in the area. Is anyone familiar with the name Garnier in Passaic County and surrounds? My grandfather, Frank Bogart Garnier, my father, Frank James Garnier, and myself, Philip C. Garnier, were all born in Paterson. I am trying to find information on the family, other French who might have immigrated as some kind of contigent, and the reasons they came to the US. Thank you in advance, Philip Garnier Champaign, IL

My name is Barbara Pierce. I have taken over the USGenWeb Archives for NJ. Also, Joe Patterson has volunteered to maintain 3 NJ county archive pages...Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean Counties. I will be maintaining the balance of the counties. The NJ Archives could use a little boost. In comparison to other states, we rank very low. There are some counties that do not have any archive files at all. The USGenWeb Archives Digital Library was implemented in July 1996, and files are being added everyday. If you have any resources you would like to submit to the NJ Archives, please contact Barbara Pierce [email protected] or Joe Patterson [email protected] (for Mercer, Monmouth & Ocean Counties only). Why not share this valuable information with your fellow researchers and submit transcriptions to the NJ Archives. For more information on the project, go to the USGenWeb Archives Project Guidelines http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/timetodo.htm Included on this page are types of files that are submitted. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Regards.... Barbara Pierce Bergen County NJGenWeb host Renville County MNGenWeb host USGenWeb NJ Archives coordinator

Vol. III, page 459. HENRY C. SPEER-The Speer Press, Incorporated, which owes its existence to Henry C. Speer, is one of the most up-to-date printing establishments in New Jersey, and commands a very exclusive patronage. The individuality of Mr. Speer is the force which has made this business what it is. Mr. Speer comes of a very old family, resident in New Jersey since early Colonial times. His grandfather, Henry Speer, was born in Little Falls, N.J., and was a boiler maker by trade, in the employ of the Rogers Locomotive Works for many years. He served for four years in the Civil War, was wounded in an arm, was captured by the Confederate side, and confined in Andersonville Prison. He lived beyond the age of eighty years, and died in Paterson in 1918. Henry (I) Speer, was a lifelong resident of Paterson, and was a steam-fitter and plumber by trade, but is long since deceased. He married Anna Crouse, and his widow is now the wife of John Knaus. The three children of Henry and Anna (Crouse) Speer are: William H., of Clifton, N.J.; Herbert E., who is in the army service detachment at West Point; and Henry C., of further mention. Henry C. Speer was born in Paterson, Aug. 3, 1889. He received his formal education in Public School No. 4, of this city, then entered the work in which many a young man has won a liberal education in the mere performance of his daily duties, and became a "printer's devil." He began at the printing office of the Blauvelt Brothers. Here he learned the trade, and became proficient in the work of a job printing office. He next became connected with the "Sunday Chronicle," where he remained for one year, then returned to Blauvelt's. Mr. Speer continued with this firm, with the exception of three years, until going into business for himself. During this period of three years he was in the employ of the Gibbs & Van Vleck Company, New York City. The comprehensive preparation which this outline briefly covers gave the young man an excellent equipment with which to build a successful future for himself. On Jan. 25, 1919, Mr. Speer embarked upon the printing business. On Oct. 25, 1919, Mr. Speer purchased ground for a new building, and the present company was formed, under the name of the Speer Press, Incorporated. The personnel of the company is as follows: Henry C. Speer, president and treasurer; E. G. Dumont, vice-president; Edna Miller Speer, secretary. At the head and moving Spirit of this able, executive force, Henry C. Speer is putting individuality and character in to the work which he is doing. In the commercialization of the art of printing he is holding fast to artistic ideals, and featuring the refinement of quality. As a business policy he is finding these lines of advance the avenues to quick and sure success, and has already taken a leading place in the trade. Mr. Speer is keenly alive to the public interests of the day, and politically upholds the Republican party. His fraternal connections include membership in Ivanhoe Lodge, No. 88, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; and William Parker Council, No. 185, Junior Order of United American Mechanics. Mr. Speer married, in Paterson, April 3 1907, Edna, daughter of Richard H. and Annie (Terhune) Miller, and they have two children: Donald Henry, twelve years of age, and Harriet Frances, three. Mr. and Mrs. Speer claim membership with no church, but are regular attendants upon the services of the Broadway Baptist Church, of Paterson. Mr. Speer is very active in the Baraca class of that church, the largest class in New Jersey.
For all those who requested specific info from Paterson and Its Environs in the past two days, please repost your request. My file with all your requests was picked up in error by my son and is now on its way out of the state in his suitcase. I have tried to respond as promptly as possible although some have been quite lengthy and take time to scan, OCR, and edit. Please be patient. Thanks. Myra E. VREELAND Lane

If you are unable to find anyone to do lookups in the Paterson papers, I have had great success with a man in NJ. who does this for a fee. Dennis Piccirillo EMAIL: [email protected] 11 Normandy Road Flanders, NJ 07836 He's come up with more than I asked for several times. He's fast, accurate and reasonable. $7.00 for one and $5.00 for 6 or more including copies. His ad can be found in Everton's Gen. Helper. I'm also in Texas with the same distance problems and am happy to find people like him who don't gouge. Claire

Hi, Would anyone know if the Paterson Newspaper would have any volunteers to make copies of old obituaries from their files. Or is there someone on this list who could do that? I have 5 ancestors that died in Paterson and hope I can find more roots. I would pay for the cost and your time. Please let me know, Thanks, Marge- now living in Texas.
My grandfather lived in Clifton and became a citizen around 1931. Would his records be located at the Paterson Courthouse? Or should I request them from the archives? Thanks, Sandy [email protected]
