I am Looking for information on William Douglass born 1792, Ireland and died 25 May 1871, Batesville, Noble Co., OH. He married (1) Sarah Reed (b.1789 - d.1839) and married (2) Leah Foster on April 2, 1840 in Williamsburg, OH. Leah was b. 1820 in Maryland and d. 1885, Noble Co., OH. He settled first in Pennsylvania, coming to Noble County in 1833. He was a Justice of the Peace and elected to the State Legislature in 1842. I am especially interested in his parentage and information on his brothers and sisters; as I believe that his youngest brother, Samuel Douglass was my great grandfather. Would appreciate any help. Dear Myra: Thomas CAHILL was b. NJ, between 1816 and 1821. He died 1903, Macopin, Passaic, NJ. He married Annis VREELAND, b. 1824, NJ, d. 1890. Children: George B., b. 1849, Mary Ellen, b. 1851, Lydia B., b. 1852, James H., b. 1856, Anna or Ann, and Julia, b. 1860. Thomas and Annis are on the 1850 census in West Milford, Passaic, NJ: "364 Thomas J. Cahill, age 29, male, b. NJ, farmer, p. 183." Thank you to all who so kindly responded to a question on my old photo which I described as 'an old gentleman in a Civil War uniform wearing a hat with a laurel wreath encircling 3 unreadable letters with the number 35 at the top of the wreath.' The most popular response was 'You might have a photo of a GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) veteran. The 35 could be his post number. The GAR were Union veterans and wore Civil War-type uniforms, sort of like the American Legion. Could date 1866 to 1920.' This is the most feasible explanation - the middle letter of the 3 above mentioned could be interpreted as an 'A' and I can find no 35th NJ Regiment. Also the time frame is in keeping with the estimated date of the photo. BTW, my gentleman wears a mourning band and a star shaped medallion on his chest. I know nothing of the GAR veterans' organization but with your gracious input I can now reasearch in a specific arena. Thanks so much. Kind regards to my ever-generous Passaic County friends. Myra, I would be interested in more info on the marriage records of Johnson and Munson and the birth records of Johnson and Smith from the Newfoundland ME Churchthat you have. How's the best way to accomplish this.? I have all these Surnames in my lists and also Methodist heritage hail from Passaic and Morris counties.

I look to the expertise of my esteemed and learned colleagues for direction on my particular dilemma. I have a portrait of an old gentleman in a Civil War uniform wearing a hat with a laurel wreath encircling 3 unreadable letters with the number 35 at the top of the wreath. Does anyone recognize this emblem or can someone point me to a place where that deals with military insignia? It is probable that the man is a Gould or a Post and it would be so helpful to identify him. This portrait is among many in an album that was formerly owned by the Post family of Newfoundland and includes many unidentified persons. Those who are identified, in addition to the Moses Post family, are: Julia Evans and her five children (3 girls and two boys); Lydia and Emma Cahill, 'Miss' Hoffman, the Mitchell Family, David King, Mary Fredericks, Hannah Smith, Emma Utter, Lydia Van Dun, 'Lottie,' Frank and Julia (Cahill) Vreeland, and Walter Vreeland. I would like to share these photos (which I date to be within the 1858-1910 timeframe) with anyone for whom they would have meaning. I have been trying to put together as much information as possible on the Gould, Post, Cahill, Vreeland and Utter families of Newfoundland in an attempt to identify the wonderful old portraits and tintypes.
