Can any one tell me where I would send for a copy of a death certificate in Hawthorne, Passaic New Jersey? And will they issue one for as recent as 1996? Also where could I get a copy of an obit for Nov. 1996 from that same area? Any help would be very much appreciated! Esther
Hi all! I am new to this list and heed help. This morning I received a death cert for my husband's grandmother, Mary Agnes McKane. We have been told that her maiden name was Brannon or Brennan and that she was born in NJ about May 1852 or 53, I cannot read the names on the death certificate!!!!! It says she went to high school and that she was born in a town whose name seems to begin with B, or maybe Br. I looked on a map and the only name that is short and begins with Br seems to be Browns, Passaic County. I also cannot read her father's last name, but it looks as if it begins with Br as well. He was from Ireland and her mother (no name at all) was from England. Might be Branin.. Can anyone offer advice or help? Guide me there please. City directories? If she went to high school there she might be on the 1860 and 1870 censuses. When she married about 1877, she and her husband moved to North Carolina. Also, what is the website address for Passaic County ? I can't believe it took me four tries to get the death certificate and now I can't read it!!!! Thanks Barbara Prior Jameson in Colorado
Do you have any research on the James Robinson family that lived in New Jersey (Bordentown, Trenton, Jersey City & Passaic) and New York (Brooklyn) in the 1800s? James was a blacksmith in Trenton, NJ in 1860. He died before 1871 (possibly in Brooklyn) when his wife, Mary Elizabeth Ward Robinson, married Thomas Brereton, a train engineer. The family lived in Jersey City, then Passaic. Who were James' parents, and did they come from England or Scotland? Can anyone help with information on these New Jersey-New York Robinsons? Hello to all; I am new to this list. I live all the way across the country from New Jersey, in Oregon. My mother's family were French immigrants, whom I have had a terrible time tracing. My grandmother died when my mother was four, so there has been no one to ask about her family history. On Mother's father's side the situation is no better. I have only recently discovered my great grandfather's name even! My Mother was born at 79 Ellison St, in Paterson, New Jersey, above Chaleix Delicatessen, which was owned by her great grandparents and managed by her parents. I would be very interested in any information about this establishment. I do not know when it was opened. I do know that it was successful enough to expand, and there were eventually three Chaleix Delicatessins just before the depression ruined business. I do not know when the business closed. My mother remembers her great grandfather, who was a wonderful chef, eventually keeping them fed by making dinners of the sparrows that flew into his chicken house to eat the grain! I am hoping very much that someone of you lives close to Calvary Cemetary and would not mind checking something for me. Is it a large cemetery? Would this be a lot of trouble? I hope not... My grandmother, Adele Chaleix Pozzoni died March 28, 1928, and I know that she is buried there. I have a copy of her death cirtificate. Unfortunately it lists a different birthdate for her than the one given on the only other document I posses. I would like to know what her tombstone says. I am also hoping to find out if her two infant sons, both named Leon Pierre Pozzoni, after thier father, are buried near her, in Calvary Cemetery. My Mother does not remember the dates of their births or deaths, which were probably about 1921 and 1922, before she was born. Mother's great grandparents, Pierre Chaleix and and his wife Doretta may also be buried in Calvary Cemetary. They lived in Pasaic County at the time of thier deaths. My mother remembers only that she was about 8 when they died, which would make the year about 1931 -1932. They owned a home at 123 Linclon Ave., Hawthorne, New Jersey, besides the delicatessens. All members of the Chaleix family other than Adele and Pierre, remained in France. Other than my mother's family and her one sister's, there are no Chaleix decendants in America. On the other side of Mother's family, my grandfather, Leon Pierre Pozzoni was a stunt pilot, who flew in airshows at Teterboro Airport all through the 1920's. His friends there called him "Lindy". Does anyone have a suggestion on how I could find out if any news stories or pictures from these air shows survive? It would thrill my mother if I could find such a thing! For a very short time, my mother's family lived in a house her stone house that her father had built on Tilt St. It was lost due to the depression. Mother always wishes she had a picture of "The Puddingstone House" her father built. Leon Pierre was the only child of Joseph Pozzoni, a French immigrant who was, in 1897 when he married, a 26 year old silk weaver, living in Paterson. He died only a very few years later. No one knows exactly when, and because of that, I have been unsuccessful in obtaining a death cirtificate for him. My grandfather's mother also was the daughter of French immigrants. Her father had a very unusual surname even in France, ( Victor LeLocat ) and died early in life, leaving no one to remember where he came from. Her mother's maiden name is illegilble on the only document that lists her! Most frustrating! Thank you very much to anyone who has taken the time to read this! I truly appreciate any help or suggestions you can offer me. In return, I would be happy to offer my services interpreting French documents, if anyone should need my help. That is one thing I can do to be helpful, even from far away. Thanks again, sincerely, Kimberly Brown [email protected]
Does anyone know anything about an early dispute concerning the New York - New Jersey state line? I have heard that the line was moved several times before the present boundary was settled upon. Supposedly, portions of what is now northern Passaic County were once in Orange County, NY. Frank

Is anyone researching the Collard family in Passaic ? On the 1880 census , I have James Edward Riley and Emma Josephine Collard living in Pompton Township . James is from Morris County originally ; I am not sure when he moved to Pompton. There seems to be no Collard connection in Morris . They married in June 1874. Mahalo-Kevin

Here is a place to go to find a researcher to do lookups, etc. for you. It is part of the NJGenWeb site and is provided for the use of both the paid researcher and for the person needing research done. http://www.cyberenet.net/~gsteiner/njgenweb/genealogist.html This is also a good place for those who wish to advertise their services and if you have services to offer, let me encourage you to go here and get your services listed. It will be a benefit to us all. Diane Ward Sives A NJGenWeb volunteer for NJHudson, NJSussex, NJPassaic, NJWarren (listowner) and a lookup volunteer for NJBergen and NJEssex counties.
Hi, My name is Jeffrey P. Van Schaik. I am new to the list and have just started researching my family history. The majority of my family come from Passaic Co., Paterson, NJ. My great-grandfather John Van Schaik and great-grandmother Regina Steinstra came over to the USA from Holland, Netherlands in 1910 per the 1920 Census and were naturalized in 1916. They settled in Paterson, NJ. I am interested in finding the ship they came over on and hopefully finding the naturalization papers. Their son Herman is my grandfather. He married Tillie Vreeland from Paterson. I know her father was Elias Vreeland and mother Elizabeth Jane Peterson. They resided in Paterson also. I don't have any farther back on this line yet. My father John is the son of Herman Van Schaik and Tillie Vreeland. On my mother's side my grandmother also grew up in Paterson. Her father's name was John Westhoven married to Anna Weenk. John Westhoven was born in Holland, Netherlands also and came over to the USA and resided in Paterson. Anna was born in Brooklyn, NY. Any information on my family is appreciated. I am interested in researching the Vreeland side since it seems that this family has been around in Paterson, New Jersey area for some time. Thanks for any help. Jeffrey P. Van Schaik
I would like everyone to know that this person is Geoffrey Cooper who seems to go under the following email addresses: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] I have corresponded with this person and offered to list him on the web pages for Hudson, Sussex and Passaic Counties as a person willing to offer lookup services PROVIDED he gives me his name, address and telephone number. The individual has indicated " I am very surprised and overwhelmed with the response to my post". I told him not to post messages to any of the counties that I have dealings with. They included Warren, Hudson, Sussex and Passaic Counties. He has posted again, now using another email address. I will not allow advertising of services on my mailing lists. If someone has something to sell, including services, it will be advertised on the web site under an appropriate section set aside for those offering services. I do not mind the occasional post about a book available for sale for a given surname or area of the state. That is not a problem for me as I like to know if there are genealogies and other reference materials pertaining areas and surnames that I am researching. So, saying: I have placed Geoffrey Cooper under his three addresses on the reject list for NJWarren and NJPassai as I do not allow this type of advertising on my lists. I have had to take these drastic measures because he will not give me his name and address and phone number and allow his name and address to be posted to the county pages, and he continues to advertise on the Passaic, Hudson and Sussex mailing lists. I do not take this action lightly. His addresses are the first to go on the reject list for any of my mailing lists and I do have and have had many mailing lists. At this point I do not recommend your using his services; do so at your own risk. I also, do not intend to post his offer of services on the any NJGenWeb site that I have any part of.
