I have been attempted to obtain an obituary for someone who died Hawthorne, Passaic County, NJ. Have been successful. Any suggestions or is there anyone willing to undertake this for a fee? Am look for Lousie Scheetz, died Oct 1981.
Judy and Myra, I missed Judy's message, but saw Myra's response. Just FYI, I have the following names in a transcription from a cemetery in "West Milford, one mile south of town on hill east of road to Butler [i.e. Macopin Rd. or Ridge Rd.]. Copied by Edwin N. Hopson, Jr., Oct. 12, 1926." This is a photocopy I received from the Passaic Co. Historical Society in 1986. Perhaps you already have seen it. Spellings appear as transcribed, it is a handwritten document. Cahell, Thomas, d. Jan. 22, 1805; aged 45 Cahill, Abraham, d. Nov. 3, 1903; aged 89th year My interest was in Abraham E. PULIS, 1820-1891, and his wife, Catharine VREELAND, 1824-1911. Names listed but not necessarily buried here: dau. Jane E. PULIS, b. 1855, son Calvin L. PULIS, b. 1849, and Marcus PULIS, b. 1846 (who is my g-grandfather and in fact is buried in Warwick, NY). --Noelle, in Columbus, Ohio, USA

I need someone who could take over the administration of the mailing list for Passaic County. I will help you learn how to interpret the error messages and am willing to teach you what you need to know to administer the list. It is not too time consuming. Let me know if you are interested. I need someone who would help me "correct" some of the queries for Passaic county. I would instruct you on how to go in an actually edit the queries. Also, I would review many of the queries and send you things that need to be changed. Some of the things I would edit for are: All surnames in the query are shown in the surname field, a surnames in the surname field are referenced in the query. That the surname mentions Passaic county or one of the Passaic County towns. Queries on the obit boards, deed boards, etc. Also must be willing to write back to the originator when necessary to find out where the person lived in Passaic county or if the query cannot be understood. Right now there is quite a backlog of corrections waiting to be made so I have quite a bit to keep someone busy for awhile. Let me know if you are interested and can help me in this matter. Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 22:00:20 -0700 From: "John Cresseveur" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> Subject: [NJMORRIS-L] Search Fee Increase - N.J. State Archives Hi Folks, I recently submitted a search to the New Jersey Archives. P.O. Box 307, 185 West State Street, Trenton, NJ 08625-0307. Included in their response was the following notice as to the increase in search rates: "As part of a long-term preservation strategy at the State Archives, effective March 1, 1999, the basic fee for searching vital records - for the period May, 1848, to May, 1878 only - will be raised from $4.00 to $10.00 per record searched. The fee will cover a search of up to five (5) consecutive years for each requested record. Each additional block of five consecutive years searched at the same time will cost another $10.00. All funds raised from the increased fee will be designated exclusively for preserving and re-microfilming the vital records in the State Archives. Currently, the original volumes must be handled for each search because most of the existing microfilm copies are partly illegible. With thousands of searches done annually, these heavy, oversize volumes have already deteriorated significantly over the past thirty years. The bindings are loose or broken, and thousands of pages are ragged and torn. Professional conservators charge up to $3,000 per volume to disband, deacidify, and mend them; the microfilming will cost an additional $1,000 each. Due to the size of the vital records collection (100+ volumes) and the high cost of preservation, the State Archives expects that this will be a long-term project, taking up to a decade to complete. While we regret the necessity of raising the search fee for these popular records, we firmly believe it will be an effective, timely and equitable way to prevent the disintegration and loss on one of New Jersey's most important historical and genealogical resources. If you have questions or concerns about this policy, please contact Archives reference services at (609) 292-6265." John Cresseveur

Dear Listers, In my search for my g-grandfather, JAMES HAGUE, who resided in Wayne Twp for many years, I thought I'd try the public library for a newspaper obituary. Would someone be good enough to send me the address, phone #, and e-mail (if available) for the Paterson Public Library? Also, does anyone know if the library will lookup an obituary? What their fee might be if the service exists? Does anyone have any other ideas about what I might do to locate this ancestor? What cemetaries were in use for residents of Wayne Twp in the late 1880's? James HAGUE was 62 at the time of the 1880 census. He was born in England in abt. 1818. Sincere thanks, Ione Ellis Arcata, California Any help is greatly appreciated.

THE PATERSON PUBLIC LIBRARY HAS THE NEWSPAPERS ON MICROFILM AND WILL LOOKUP AND COPY (OR USED TO DO IT) FOR YOU FOR A SMALL FEE. HAVE YOU TRIED THEM? ALSO, IF YOU KNOW THE FUNERAL PARLOR, THEY TEND TO KEEP THE INFORMATION ON FILE SINCE THEY WERE THE ONES (STILL ARE) THAT WOULD SEND DEATH NOTICES OR OBITS TO THE LOCAL PAPERS, EITHER AS A COURTESY OR FOR A FEE. Jim, Mormons have filmed grantor/grantee indexes and records. You can order them to view at your local Family History Center. Look in FHL Catalog under NJ, Passaic County, Land (I think that's right, from memory) to see film numbers. One of the granteee indexes that I copied at Salt Lake for my FARRELLs from Paterson is from film #096365.
