Dear Listers, Does anyone have a guess about where a resident of Wayne Twp. might be interred? My g-grandfather, James HAGUE, who was born abt. 1818 in England was a resident of Wayne Twp during the years covered by the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Federal Census. I am certain that he was a Protestant. I have been unable to locate any information on when he died or where. I need his birth date to place him in England. He was married to Ann OSBURNE on 1/1/1858 in Paterson. I know this is sketchy information, but I know little of the geography of NJ. Also, does anyone know if the various cemeteries have indexes of the interred? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Ione Ellis
I am looking for Malsburys of any spelling at any time in NJ. But I am especially looking for mid to late 1700s. My 4th Gr Grandfather was William Molsberry (That's how we spell it) who probably came from NJ. He would have been born around 1770-1775 and was a hatmaker in Muskingum Co, Ohio. I have heard that there was a tanner named Malsbury in NJ around that time and think he may be his son. He was in Ohio about 1795 to 1801 and then left. His "wife" was Sarah Green(e) and with her he had two children, William and Lucinda. Don't have much on Lucinda, but have a very complete family tree for William's offspring. Thanks. Hello Listers: This is the first time I have posted to this list. I am looking for my ggrandfather Abraham Simon. He came from Germany sometime in the 1800s and fought in the Civil War. At the time of his death in 1926 he was living in Patterson, NJ. His second wife's name was Rose, and his first wife's name was Annie Oberson. If there is anyone out there with info on this person, I would really appreciate your help. Thank you LaVera [email protected]
I was curious as to whether anyone on the list has looked at naturalization records issued by this court? I have an ancestor who was naturalized through this court in 1864. I am wondering about the amount of biographical information contained in these records (which I know was typically pretty sparse for this time period ), particularly whether his parish of birth in England may be named, rather than just the country? Am searching for ancestry info on James M. WHITE born Mar 11,1828 in Paterson, NJ. He was the son of Michael WHITE born 1795 in Clogheen, Tipperary, Ireland and his wife Catherine. Do not know where Michael & Catherine married, or anything about Catherine. James and his parents moved to Kentucky while he was a child. Do not know where in Kentucky or if there were other children in the family. James moved to Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio to complete his education at the Lebanon and Delaware Academies. He was a school teacher and married Rachel Ann CHENOWETH on Aug. 25, 1856 in Pike County, Ohio. James enlisted in the Ohio 91st Infantry on July 1862 and left 1865 as a Captain. James and Rachel had 10 children all born in Ohio. Between 1872 and 1890 James and Rachel and some of their children moved to Burlington Junction, Nodaway County, Missouri where many of them are buried. I have been fortunate to receive much assistance from the CHENOWETH genealogists out there but nothing to help me with the WHITES! Any help or suggestions on this WHITE family is greatly appreciated...Dale [email protected]
Hi Passaic and Sussex Co. Lists: I just wanted to report on my brief, but informative, research trip to Morristown, NJ the other day. The only place that my cousin and I visited was the Joint Free Public Library of Morristown and Morris Township located at 1 Miller Road, Morristown, NJ. It has a wonderful local history and genealogy department, staffed by knowledgeable and helpful people. The hours are unbelievable; Mon-Thurs, 9-9, Fri. 9-6, Sat. 9:30-5 and Sunday, 1-5!! I believe the weekend hours may change for the summer so, as always, it's best to call ahead. There is a parking lot behind the library as well as street parking with meters. The city was very "non-threatening" to drive in and and the library easy to find. As far as the material there, I could have stayed there until they closed at 9pm except I had to drive 3 hours to get back to where I am staying! I'll be visiting hopefully again this summer. The Morris Co. genweb page has a link to the library which lists out the stuff they have there. I've been to many, many libraries in the past few years and this one ranks right up there at the top of the list. And thanks to the people who recommended that we go there! Regards to you, Marilyn Hough Stern
Hi Listers: The above names are of my ancestors - all from Paterson: Sophia LANGMAN/LANGEMANN, b. 14 Dec 1881, d. 15 Apr 1972. She married Thomas J. LYONS, b. 6 Nov 1876 in Jersey City, NJ, d. 15 Jun 1953 in Paterson, NJ. Sophia and Thomas were divorced circa 1912, and she married a man named Joseph?DEMAREST. Thomas married Alice BYRNES, widow of John BYRNES, tavern owner (Grand Street, Paterson). At the time of her death, Sophia was named DEMAREST, Thomas LYONS was the child of PeterLYONS and EllenCHRISTIE who came from County Cork, Ireland. I have no other information on them. I know that Ellen died in the early 1900s (1916?) and is buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Totowa as is Thomas LYONS>. Thomas was the father of Alice LYONS WALTON, b. 27 Jan 1910 in the Dublin section of Paterson. She had older sisters named, Marion & Agnes, and a brother, Thomas J. LYONS, Jr. Henry WALTON b. 29 May 1911, d. 28 Nov 1948 married Alice LYONS. They are both buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Totowa, NJ. Alice died on 12 May 1998 in Havelock, NC. Henry was the son of William Tibby WALTON, b. 30 Jun 1881, d. 29 Aug 1954, and Fannie SIKKELEE WALTON, b 29 Jul 1881 in Texel, Holland, d. 29 Apr 1937, Prospect Park, NJ. If you are researching any of the same names, please contact me. Thanks, Elizabeth Walton Pruzinsky
I would like to ask people to routinely review the queries on the GenConnect boards. We are getting brand new people who are saying: How do I get started tracing my families history how do I find birth certificates and death certificates. I don't know how to get started. Etc. Please help us by answering some of these queries for us. It also gives a shot in the arm to everyone who sees that some queries actually do get answered. Diane Ward Sives
As I am reviewing the GenConnect postings; I am coming up with some very interesting things. I am going to cover some of the more common errors here: Surname Field: If you put Ward, Sives in the subject; that does NOT mean that you don't have to fill in the surname field. The surname field is the only one used for Surname Helper searches; and MUST be filled in or no one will see your posting. Make sure you post ALL the surnames in your query in the Surname Field. Also, make sure that ALL the surnames in the surname field are mentioned in your query. Place ALL variant spellings in the surname field too. Query helps: Make mention of the county or a town with in the county in your query. If you know the town within the county that your ancestors are from: then by all means mention it in the query. You need all the help you can get so place those towns in the query. Try to give a time span. If your ancestors were there in the early 1700s that is far different than if they migrated in 1870 from the old country. You don't have to be totally specific; but just give "about" dates. There is an option for reviewing the query; make use of it and check for typos. Most of us use TASL which means "Typos as a Second Language" Responding to a Query: Make sure you change the surname field to the surnames you are responding to. Deed Boards, Obit Boards, Bible Records, Pensions, Biographies: Please only post actual deeds, obits, Bible Records, Pensions, Biographies to those boards. Do not post a request for deeds, obits, Bible Records, and pensions to these boards. These types of queries will be deleted and moved to the Query board. When you see a deed, obit, Bible Record, Pension, Biography: Please do not respond to it on that board. Respond to it directly to the individual who posted it or formulate a query and place it on the query board. Thanks for reading this far and for making our lives a bit easier. Diane Ward Sives
I am looking at the postings to the Passaic County GenConnect board and find that many of the questions there should be posted here on the list. I also notice that no one seems to be posting on the list anymore. Questions like: is such and such census available for some town in Passaic county and ... How do I get birth and death records for New Jersey can be posted on the list. Just because we have the new GenConnect Boards does not mean you can't ask your questions on the list. No, not at all. Please do continue to utilize the list. That is what it is here for. David Henry is helping me with the GenConnect postings and you might be hearing from him if he has a question on your posting. Good morning "fellow" New Jersey researchers--Does anyone have any experience and/or ideas regarding research in Morristown that they would care to share? I am going there tomorrow (Monday) just for one day with another researcher. It is a rather spur of the moment trip and we are planning to go to the court house but we are open to suggestion and appreciate any thoughts anyone might have. We are researching people who eventually settled in both Sussex and Passaic Cos., primarily in the late 1700s, early 1800s. (I have already printed out information from the Morris Co. website on the various libraries, directions on how to get to the courthouse, etc.) Thank you so much and have a wonderful Sunday! Regards to you, Marilyn Hough Stern
Hi, what Paterson newspapers were around in the fall of 1908? Do you know where I can see them? Looking for an article on a missing relative, William STEPHENSON, who disappeared in the fall of 1908. Thanks Eileen
I just called and ordered it myself; so it is true. They said that I would have the update in 3 to 5 business days as it was in stock. Diane Ward Sives Got An interesting Letter from a friend It Reads: "Anyone running Windows 98 is NOT year 2000 compliant. Call Microsoft at 1-888-219-1302 to order the upgrade on CD-ROM. When you call, do not use the digital telephone number access - STAY on the line until the recording is done, and you'll get an operator to take your order. Tell them you want "Windows 98 Year 2000 Update" on CD-ROM. It IS free and there is no charge whatsoever for the CD, or the shipping." Well I Called and ITS true Win98 is NOT 2000Yk Compliant and I did as instructed, stayed on the Line Until an Operator came on. WHICH was not very long I might add..........and I ordered My FREE CD ___________________________________ I was sent this message by a friend and I did order the 98 upgrade cd.....they do not ask you for the serial number so you wouldn't have to be home and dig through papers to find the number to give them.? ==== Dutch-Colonies Mailing List ==== Have you visited the Rootsweb Genealogy Data Cooperative Website?
