Hi all - Is anyone doing any research on MURRAY in Paterson? I'm looking for info on Alexander MURRAY married to Isabella THOM and Mary MURRAY married to Roderick MOORE abt. 1900-25. Does any of this ring a bell? Thank you, Marcia Buist Dykstra
Where would I write to obtain a copy of a will for a person who died 25 November 1928 in Clifton, Passaic County, NJ. Please reply via email. Thank you for reading and answering my letter. Jim WARD MS USA
Hello everyone; Does anyone have a map which shows the location in Paterson of a street named Wixit? I was not able to find it on Mapquest or Mapblast, so it must not exist any longer. My great grandfather Joseph Pozzoni's 1897 marriage certificate lists him as a 26 year old French immigrant, living at 25 1/2 Wixit, working as a silk weaver. I wonder if this address might give me a clue as to which silk manufacturer he was working for? I am also curious how close this was to 177 Van Houten St., where my great grandmother, Marie Elise ( Elizabeth ) LeLocat was living at that time. Thank you very much for any help you can give. Sincerely, Kimberly
Hello Robin; I'm sorry, I don't have the whole 1920 city directory. I wish I did, then I would happily offer to do lookups, but all I have is two photocopied sheets that were sent to me some time ago by Mr. George Van Riper. I can only answer questions if the answers happen to be near enough to my family in the book to be included with what he sent me. The directory was a small book, so the two sheets Mr. Van Riper sent are equivalent to four of it's pages. What I have is a partial listing of the C' and a partial listing of the P's. My two postings from the Friday listed all of the C's I have, which were from page 228 and 229 of the actual directory. I typed every bit of the information listed with each name and business that was there, exactly as it appeared on the page. I'll type the two directory pages of P's for the list as soon as I can. I was hoping that by doing this someone else besides me might be able to benefit from George's generosity. Do you know what silk company your family was working for, or when? What do you need to know? I really need to look at many more city directories, because I don't know when certain members of my family came and went from Paterson, or when and where all their businesses were established. Since the directories were published each year, containing the kind of information I typed for the list, they are excellent for establishing working people and business' whereabouts, and what year they may have died or closed shop. If you send me what it is that you are looking for, I will keep it, and look whenever I might be in a position to help. This may take time, though. I've been ill the whole past year, and my research has most often limited to what I can accomplish over the computer. I've rarely been well enough to go out, ( though I'm ever optimistic that will change soon ) and I am in rural Oregon, so nothing is really nearby. I won't forget to take your request with me though, whenever I might be able to get somewhere. If I am already looking at something, it would be no trouble to look for extra names. If you should happen to find yourselves in a position to be looking at city directories, ( or any other listing of people in Paterson, Haledon or Hawthorne ) would you mind keeping your eye out for my surnames for me? They are all so rare that I know if one is found, it has to be mine. They are Chaleix and Pozzoni anytime between the mid 1890's and the mid 1930's, Mirablon, which bounced back and forth between France and Paterson from the early 1900's until about 1928, when they returned to France for good, and for just a short time, before 1897, LeLocat. I wish I could have been more help to you. Good luck in finding all that you are looking for. Sincerely, Kimberly

Hello everyone; Due to the kindness of Mr. George Van Riper, a while back I received two double page copies of the 1920 Paterson City Directory. What I have is a partial listing of C's and a partial listing of P's, those pages containing information about my grandfather, Leon Pierre Pozzoni, and my great great grandfather, Pierre Chaleix. In hopes that someone else might also benefit from George's kindness, I have transcribed the names that appear on the pages he sent me. Because there are an awful lot of names, I won't send them all at once. This is just the first installment. I hope very much that this will help someone. I hope you have a beautiful day. Would anyone know how long Laurel Grove cemetery has been in existence? Also, if someone live in Franklin Township, Bergen County, in the late 1800's where is the most likely cemetery they would be buried in. Have tried Valleau, Wyckoff Reformed, Midland Park Methodist, Union Cemetery, Zabriskie Cemetery in Hohokus, George Washington Cemetery. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jean
Has anyone sent away for Church records from Holy Sepulchre in Paterson ? The Cemetery was very helpful , but I have had bad luck with Catholic Churches , so thought I better ask first . The records I seek are from the mid 1800's to early 1900's to see if I can learn my Donohue family's Irish origins . Please post replies to the list . Mahalo , Kevin
Mary There is a two volume set of "Records of New Jersey Men in the Civil War" at the Passaic Co. and Bergen Co. Historical Society. The set has also been reprinted. George VR
This is hear say but I thaught I'd pass it along. I've heard there is a book called "Record of men from NJ who faught in the Civil War". I understand there is a copy of this book in the Teaneck Library and the Englewood Library Reference Dept. I'm not sure it they have this book in Paterson or not. Mary

sfb have you tried the soundex? There is also an index available from Heritage Quest for the 1870 which I have, I'll check it for your Vanderhoff and let you know what I find. Are you sure they were in Passaic Co.? Some families in my lines seem to be interchangeable between Morris and Passaic Co's also borders changed. anged.=20
Can anyone help me sort out the Paulse families of the Acquackanonk-Hackensack area? 1. I am looking for the siblings and parents of Paulus Paule who married Neeltje Jurrianse. She was born 26 Oct 1747, the daughter of Gerrebrant Jurrianse (a Van Riper descendant) and Fytie Garretse Van Vorst. 2. Francyntje, the second wife of Garret Adrian Post, is recorded as Pouwelse in the Hackensack DRC record (1731) and Peterse in the Acquackanonk records. Who were her parents and siblings? Thank you for any help you can offer. -- Wendy Freborg
Is there anyone out there who has access to the 1870 or 1880 census? I have a brick wall I just can not seem to get around. I would like to find me great grandfather. His name was Peter F. Vanderhoff. He may be listed with his father Richard Vanderhoff. I also would like to find my great grandmother Nettie Wheeler Vanderhoff. All I know is that she was born in NJ in 1861. My theory is that it was the same area. This family has been very elusive. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Debbie

Does anyone know of another Dutch Reformed Church in Passaic, besides the Passaic DRC? The Marriage Certificate of my Great-grandparents in 1894 is signed by Rev. W. M. Jacobs. The church looks like it could be Koll Ref. Church. Any ideas? Carole Bakelaar Bolard

There was a Panic of 1857, but it does not seem to be tied to a bank failure. The Panic of 1837 seems a more likely candidate because it saw the failure of many banks and was followed in 1839 by the failure of the Bank of the United States. Both these Panics were followed by Depressions. Economically, the U.S. was on a real roller coaster...so much for the Good Old Days! -- Wendy Freborg
