I too have heard it said that South Jerseyans had much sympathy with the South during the War, although I can't back that up with any published histories. New Jersey did not cast its electoral votes for Lincoln's re-election but rather for George McClellan, who was later Governor of New Jersey. As for which NJ outfit an Ocean County man would join, that would probably be up for grabs - I believe men simply joined regiments which needed filling. Anyone know any more?
