Sure seems like those VAN NOTE's were illusive folks in many cases. Perhaps the fact that one (or more) were part of the Pine Barren Robbers of Rev. War infamy has something to do with it. This was one of the more unsavory aspects of the War - included were VAN NOTEs and BURDGEs. In 1781, a Jonathan BURDGE appears in the Court records of Monmouth Co, and was convicted of Murder...and hung. This was when locals took their pre-War occupations of River-shipping between NJ & NYC area to the extreme, working for themselves, with a Tory sympathy. Their behavior was so offensive, eventually even the British "disavowed" them.
