Peter and Mary spent most of their lives on farm in Wayne, NJ. Peter was a blacksmith and farmer. He attended the Pompton Plains Church. 1846 Inventory of Peter Courter is listed on P 255 & 256 of NJ, Passaic, Probate Records, Inventories. 8 Dec 1846, Giles Courter ask the Orphans Court to appoint comm. to divide the land of Peter Courter because his wife, Maria Courter, has died, also. Abrahm Ryerson, John Riker and Henry A. Vanness were appointed to divide the land. 1846 Nov. William and Phelindy Courter of the County of Lapin State of Michigan well to Stephen Courter of the Township of Newark for $240 land in Manchester being the farm where Peter Courter, deceased, resided. One ninth part of farm and lot of land being in Manchester. The land begins on the bank of the Pequanock River in line of Simeon VanNess, along Morris Canal and the lands of I. H. Mead and R. H. Ryerson containing 14 84/100 of an acre. Witness is Benjamin Crane. Interviewed 3 Nov 1846. Recorded 8 Dec 1846. Note: This land was sold before the division of lands by the Orphan Court. The Orphan Court gave William 10.46 acres not 14.84 and his lot was known as lot #2 on the map created for Orphan Court by Abraham Ryerson, Henry H. Vanness and John Riker 13 Dec 1846. 1847 15 Apr 1847, John Courter and his wife, Betsey of Township of Dryden, County of Lapeer and State of MI sells to Timothy Crane of the County of Morris and State of NJ for $200 land in the Township of Manchester being part of the Real Estate of which Peter Courter died seized and the part which was set off for John Courter one of the children of Peter Courter. Lots number 9 and 10. They are located by Morris Canal and the Turnpike Rd. One lots contains 14.89 acres and the other contains 2.07 acres. Witnesses Orville M. and Stephen S. Lord. Received and recorded 14 May 1847. 1847 Aug 1847 Catherine Crane and Timothy Crane of Pequanock sell a lot of land to her brother Henry Courter of Manchester for $300. This lot of land is part of real estate of which Peter Courter died seized and set off by Orphans Court to divide the real estate of the said Peter Courter and set off in their map of of the Division to Catherine Crane one of the children and heirs of said Peter Courter which lot is marked and numbered 5 on the aforesaid map. Being a part of the Homestead starting at the road to corner of lot 4 assigned to the hiers of Jane Bernard containing 10 acres and 22 hundreths. 1848 Mar, Henry Courter and Priscilla, his wife, living in Manchester sell to Phillip Kingsley of Orange, Essex, NJ, land containing 10.22 acres which he purchased Aug 1847 from his sister, Catherine Crane, and land containing 8.92 acres which was lot #7 on map made by Orphans Court and given to Henry Courter. Both lots of land sold for $500. Note: The deed could have an error stating that Henry was from Manchester because other records state he was living in Orange, Essex, NJ. 1848 7 Jun 1848, Giles P. Courter and Maria, his wife, of the Township of Wayne in the County of Passaic and State of NJ sells to Henry I. Mead of the same place for $280. Land in Wayne, beginning in the middle of the Newark and Pompton Turnpike Road where the line on the north side of the whole farm late of Peter Courter. deceased intersect the same along the line to lot 5 and then lot 7 assigned to Henry Courter containing six acres and 75/100 being lot no. 6 as set off to the said Giles P. Courter by commisssioners appointed by Orpans Court to divide land of said Peter Courter deceased. Witness and interviewer was Perigrine Sandford, Judge. Recorded 12 Jun 1848. 1849 Mar, Stephen and Jane Courter of Newark sell to James Norton of Paterson two lots of land for $740. One lot contains 6.16 acres known as lot #3 on Orphans Court map containing 6.16 acres and the other lot which Stephen purchased from William for 10.46 acres. Note: This corrects acres in deed made in 1846 between Stephen and William. 1849 June, Catherine and William B. Denman of Newark sell to Henry I. Mead of 1/5 of land assigned to Abraham Courter, dcd., of Newark, son of Peter Courter, dcd for $35. Abraham Courter was assigned lot #8 by the Orphan Court and it contained 8.95 acres. Note: There were 5 children who inherited this land. 1859 May, Peter Courter of Town of Fernandina in the County of Nassau State of Florida on 3 May 1859 sells to Simon S. VanNess of the Township of Wayne in County of Passaic and State of NJ land lying in Wayne, being 2/5 part of land assigned to Abraham Courter, dcd. the son of Peter Courter, dcd. This land is bounded on the North and West by Moses VanNess on the South by lands of Simon VanNess, East by Pompton Newark Turnpike and total acres of all Abraham's, dcd., property is 10 acres more or less. Also, one other fifth part held by Deed of Conveyance from his brother William Courter. Witness J. Polhemus. Interviewed 18 Jun 1859. Note: The total property inherited by Abraham, dcd, was 8.95 acres. 1859 June, Henry I. and Mary Mead, his wife, sell to Simon S. Vanness, 1/5 part of land of Abraham Courter, dcd., for $50. Note: It does not state if Mary was daughter of Abraham or that this was 1/5 of property purchased from Catherine and William B. Denman of Newark in Jun 1849. 1860 Dec, land given to Jane Bernard, dcd, by Orphan Court, containing 8.45 acres was sold by John Daniel and wife, Margaret, and Charles McNeil and wife, Margaret, both of City of Paterson to Samuel Daniel of Wayne for $150. Land was sold to them by Michael Smith Oct 1859. Note: I do not have a copy of 1859 deed. 1862 Sarah Francisco, Relic, of Henry Francisco, late of Caldwell Township, sells to Henry J. Courter of Wayne 13 acres of land in Wayne. Sarah received land from the estate of Peter Courter in 1846. It is known as lot #1, includes Winter Island, and is along the Packanack River and the Old River. It contains 13.64 acres. Witness Peter D. Speer. Interviewed 6 Jun 1862. Rec. & Rec. 21 Apr 1870. Note: This Henry J. Courter is not the brother of Sarah Francisco. Both Henry's were b and d about the same year. I compared signatures of both men with the name of Henry. 1902 LaBaw's history of Preakness described Courter tombstone which was in 1960 at the end of Courter Rd, Mountainview section of Wayne Township. 1960 The Courter farm was along the Passaic River in the Mountain View section of Wayne. His wife's tombstone was there, also. The stones and bodies were moved to the Preakness Reformed Churchyard. Judy Ullman
