The subject of Counterfeiters in New Jersey is of interest to me. My own line, John Pipes and Abraham Hathaway, were involved in a counterfeit scheme in Morristown in 1747, along with their cronies Timothy Conner, Seth Hall, Job Allen, Andrew Morrison, Abraham Southerd, Samuel Blackford, Sylvanus Totten and David Brent. It seems one of them had a mold for Pieces of Eight, making the coins of a base metal and dipping them in silver. They were caught, of course, and the King was Very Displeased with them. The book "Counterfeiting in Colonial America" by Kenneth Scott is must reading -- get it on interlibrary loan. Carol
Those Rogues! Those Fiends! Those Scoundrals of Society! And where was Batman when King George needed him most? I've been under the impression that Job Allen, Sylvie Totten, and Abe Southerd (probably the others but I've not heard about them) were pillars of the community! They are even listed in some court documents (NJ Genie Society Magazine articles) as being frequent jurors. As businessmen they occasionally got taken in to court for something, but nothing criminal. Bully for them! You go guys! Love it when we find those black sheep! Rich in NH [email protected] wrote: > > The subject of Counterfeiters in New Jersey is of interest to me.
