    1. Re: [NJMORRIS] Mules & Canal Boats
    2. The Morris Canal could be the locale of a lifetime genealogy study in itself. My great-grandfather from eastern France, Claude Harsch, was working as a boat captain on the Canal (mules pulled the boats) around 1874 when he met & married Henrietta (Booth-Doty) Sutton, descended from Benjamin Sutton & Electa Mills (of the Capt. Timothy Mills line). Their daughter Emilie was born a year later at Succasunna. Ben Sutton is said to be son of Wm. Sutton from Bernard, Somerset Co, and Mary Fancher/Francher. She is probably the sister of John Fancher who married Hannah Rightmire/Richmire. Bit by bit we untangle the web of centuries of northern NJ relationships. Hmmm, as you mentioned mules, the Franchers had fine horses (based on comparative appraisal value on estate inventories) and later generations used them to deliver meat from the family butcher shop (check out www.rootsweb.com/~njmorris) & pull the hearse, and next Claude Harsch used them to deliver groceries from his store. My father enjoyed Claude's delivery horses when he was a boy & passed the love of horses on to me. Interesting how such diverse clues fit together.
