    1. [NJMORRIS] SMITH of Morris Co.
    2. I am researching the descendants of Peter Smith of Jamaica, LI, some of whom lived in Morris Co., NJ. In 1954, Samuel Stelle Smith wrote a genealogy of this Smith family which was published in the New York Gen. & Bio. Record, Vol. 85, entitled, "Peter Smith of Jamaica, Long Island, and Some of His Descendants". Current Smith descendants have submitted material On-line that updates and corrects this genealogy and we are adding more information when found. The Index to the site can be found at: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~gen2/indexs.htm At present, I am interested in learning more about Dr. Peter Smith of Morris Co., who was born on LI, 13 Feb 1748, and died Morris Co., 16 Apr 1818. In his will written 1 May 1818, and pro. 13 May 1818, his wife was called "last wife Phebe" and his children were: Catherine, widow of Baldwin WOODS; Elizabeth, wife of Jacob VANDERPOOL; Susanna, wife of Foster DAY; Fanny SMITH; Rebecca SMITH (not yet 21); Mary, wife of Samuel BURROUGHS; Frederick SMITH (dec'd). Also named were grandsons Frederick and Calvin SMITH, sons of Frederick SMITH, dec'd. He mentioned other grandchildren, born and unborn, but did not give names of those who were living. Briefly, from Smith's genealogy it is learned that: Peter Smith married 1) Susannah RICHARDS, dau. of Aaron RICHARDS, first pastor of the Presby. Church in Rahway, NJ. Susannah died in 1785, and Peter married Phebe POTTER, dau. of Joseph Potter. Dau. Catherine md Jonathan Baldwin WOODS and the family lived in Spring Valley, NJ. They had eight children. Dau. Elizabeth and Jacob VANDERPOEL moved to NYC after marriage. They had 12 children, seven of whom lived to adulthood and of those, six married. Son Frederick md Charlotte DAY, dau. of William & Nancy (BONNEL) DAY of Chatham. Their son Frederick md (-) BALDWIN and lived in Elizabeth, NJ. Their son Calvin md Louisa J. WARD. Dau. Susanna md Foster DAY, son of William & Nancy (BONNEL) DAY. Susanna and Foster Day had nine children. She died in Elizabeth, NJ. A son William SMITH b in 1787, died in 1809, before his father made his will. Dau. Fanny md as his second wife, Gabriel JOHNSON. They had no children. Dau. Rebecca md 1) Andrew or Anderson LEWIS and 2) (-) VAN SICKLEN. Dau. Mary, who married Samuel BURROUGHS was also called Polly. >From Virginia Alleman Brown's "Morris County Heirs to Estates, 1785-1900": At the Morris County Court, Sept. 1828 Term, Fanny SMITH, a daughter of Peter and the wife of SAMUEL BURROUGHS, was appointed the guardian of the minor children of Peter SMITH: WILLIAM L., PETER F., JOHN N., and LEWIS C. SMITH, all under 14. According to Peter's will, his daughter Mary married Samuel Burroughs. This may have been an original error in the 1828 Court record or one in transcribing. In any case, Peter and his last wife Phebe apparently had four sons who were not named in his will. They were all born after about 1813. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows more about any of these families and/or the last Smith sons who were placed under the guardianship of Mary/Polly Burroughs. Thank you, Judy Tooman
