    1. [NJMORRIS] Deeds, Wills, GOULD, PARKER, MASSACRE ...question
    2. Re: my GOULD, PARKER & MASSACRE lines in Morris County I may visit Morris County during the first week of July. Where would I go to search for Deeds (c. 1930 back)? Where would I go to search for Wills (c. 1930 back)? Will I be able to pull an index and then a Deed/Will ... as I can in many MA counties? My people were in early Dover, Boonton, Pequannock (sp?), Rockaway ... and perhaps other places. Are any of these towns places where the area is still country-ish? Or are all cities now? Where would be nice place to stay which would be close to these places ... something like a Holiday Inn or a Motel 6? Thank you! Betty G. Middleboro, MA

    3. Betty: Morris County Courthouse has both the deeds and the wills from 1930 back (and forward, too, for that matter.) They are in the administration building - a newer five story structure next to the courthouse. The County Clerk's office, for Deeds, is on the first floor and the Surrogate's Court, for wills and administrations, is on the 5th floor. There are helpful employees in both offices to get you started and help with questions. When you are checking the deeds - you might also want to check the mortgage indexes. Sometimes you get additional goodies from the mortgages because they could have been held by other family members, etc. When you are looking at estate files, don't forget to look at the application (or petition) for a list of the next of kin, with addresses, etc. You can make copies of any deed and mortgage books you want on the copiers available in the record room. I think copies are 25 cents each and I think you may have to buy a "copy card" for the machines -- but am not sure of that. Copies in Surrogate's Court are $3 per page for plain copies if they make them for you. I do not know if you can make them yourself for less - you'll have to check with them for that. Check out the Morris County website for Surrogate's Court and County Clerks' offices for hours, directions, etc.: Surrogate's Court: http://www.morrissurrogate.com/ County Clerk: http://www.clerk.morris.nj.us/ You might also want to budget in some time for a side trip to the Morristown / Morris Township public library - up the street from the courthouse. They have a wonderful local history and genealogy collection (including personal name indexes for some of the local papers and obituary indexes for them, too.)
