    2. Kurt Kremlick
    3. Greetings from Kalamazoo Is the anyone who can tell me the location of "North Church" which is suppose to have a cemetery. I assume it is in Morris County. There is suppose to be a Denton Clark (dates unknown but assume late 1800's early 1900's given his wife Victoria Earles was born c 1860) buried in that cemetery. Any help locating said person/cemetery or suggestions welcomed Kurt in Kalamazoo ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! 1. [NJMORRIS] Fwd: [HINDS] Hinds Surname DNA project
    2. Barbara Finney
    3. I have been researching Morris County genealogy for some years trying to find the ancestry of my branch of the Hinds family. Some came from Essex County MA by way of Long Island, some came directly from Essex County, MA, others came from places unknown. We have decided that the only way to sort them out is by checking DNA and have started a project to do just that. If any of you have Hinds blood, please join with us. The person who furnishes the DNA sample must be a male named Hinds, Hines or other variant but he is not necessarily the one who pays the fee! I and others are paying for our representative. Barbara Nan & George Wolf <71532.734@compuserve.com> wrote: Date: Sat, 16 Aug 2003 03:22:48 -0400 From: Nan & George Wolf <71532.734@compuserve.com> Subject: [HINDS] Hinds Surname DNA project To: HINDS-L@rootsweb.com Hi All: The Hinds Surname DNA project is underway! The test kits are being mailed to our first six participants this week. Please let your fellow Hinds researchers (of any spelling) know about this. Below is the message that I sent out to the mail lists with the various spellings such as Haines, Hanes, etc. this one happens to be a copy of the one that I sent to the Haines group. Regards Nan Wolf Administrator Hinds-L mail list Administrator Hinds Surname Project at FamilyTreeDNA.com 71532.734@compuserve.com ======================== Hi All: We at the Hinds-L mail list have just started a Hinds Surname DNA project. Today six kits were mailed out to our first participants. Although those six males are spelled Hinds - it doesn't mean their ancestors spelled their names that way. Our first six are from the U.S. but we hope to expand to include Hinds etc. lines from Canada, Australia, England, Ireland, etc. AND, since we feel that people with other spellings MAY be descendants from a common ancestor we would like to be able to change the name of this project to the Hinds/Haines/Hines,Haynes,Hynes,etc. project. The different lines will be differentiated by colors. Then if it proves to be true that the Haines have nothing to do with the Hinds - the groups can then split apart to different results pages with their own administrators. In a surname project the participants need to be male with the Hinds/Haines, etc name. If a female on your list wants to participate, she can ask a brother or a male cousin to participate on her behalf. She can even offer to underwrite his costs. The cost for a 12 marker test is $99. and for the 25 marker test is $169.00. The test consists of a cheek swab. The 12 marker test will decide whether a common ancestor exists but he may be hundreds of years ago. The 25 marker test can break the line into tributaries. This same test will also tell of Native American heritage (if it is not too far back in time.) You may first want to visit the main page at: familytreedna.com to get a feel of how it works. Click on Surname Projects in the first paragraph & take a look at the Chase project which has a webpage. We hope to have a page when our results arrive. For privacy reasons, the participants can opt to have their results published under a number instead of their name. What think you? You are most welcome. It saves the Haines group from having to get a project underway. We tried to join the Hines DNA project but they are limiting it to a certain VA line. Our Project Profile page is on: http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_sum.asp?let=H Feel free to send this message to fellow Haines researchers. He signed the will of John Hambler in the 1770's, for example. Samuel Wills mentions his son-in-law John Hamler in his own will as "my late daughter's husband." But Mr. Wills leaves him nothing. 2. Rich, Aaron is a multigenearational given name of a single branch of the Van Duyne family. The first Aaron (1830-1863) was the son of Nicholas H. Van Duyne (1796-1870) and Hannah Vanderhoof (1800-1864). The Van Duyne family of Morris Co. descends from a single progenitor, Abraham Van Duyne (1677- ) and Geertje Martens Ryerson (1675- ). 1. [NJMORRIS] The Mystery of E.E. Van Duyne
    2. To all; In working on the Van Duyne family of Morris Co., a puzzle arose concerning an entry in the 1870 Morris County census. I had accounted for most of the Van Duynes listed in that census with regard to the Van Duyne family tree; but an entry for E.E. Van Duyne on page 27 for Boonton Township could not be pinned down. I had photocopied each instance of a Van Duyne found in the microfilm record and thus had a physical record of every Van Duyne and adjacent tallied individuals both preceding and following the targeted individual or family. E.E. Van Duyne’s record was difficult to read, The gender box was a mess because, apparently, both “M” and “F” had been inscribed in the original record making its decipherment impossible. The occupation appeared to be “House Repair”. There were six adults listed in the dwelling, four of the males involved in the harness industry, one female keeping house and the mysterious E.E Van Duyne. Three of the listed adults were Hopkins and three were unrelated, pointing toward the conclusion that the three non-Hopkins (including E.E.) were boarders. Further directing me was the thought that E.E. Van Duyne might be a member of another branch of the family, descended from Edward Earle Van Dine, of which “Edward E.” was a common multigenerational given name. It was possible that a member of this completely separate branch had somehow drifted to Morris Co. after 1860 and then, after 1870, had drifted out of the county. Since the other individuals in the record seemed to have no significance, I only copied E.E Van Duyne’s name into my computer record of the census and whenever I browsed the computer record I routinely passed over E.E’s name. Recently, the photocopy of the census page accidentally was exposed on my desk and I noticed the Hopkins entries and on a whim decided to look up Hopkins in my genealogy file. There was a Charles Hopkins in the census record and a Charles Hopkins in the genealogy file and when I compared the two there came upon me that Eureka moment. Charles Hopkins’ wife in the file was Hetty Ann Van Duyne; Hetty A. Hopkins in the census. The other male Hopkins in the census household was John R. Hopkins; in the file John R. Hopkins was Charles Hopkins’ brother. His wife was Elizabeth Ellen Van Duyne: the elusive E.E. Van Duyne. I had found an unusual household where two Hopkins brothers were married to two Van Duyne sisters. The census entry was unusual in that Elizabeth Ellen’s listed family name was Van Duyne rather than her married name of Hopkins. Also, her initials were listed rather than her full name. The written-over gender field was unusual. And the occupation, upon closer scrutiny, became “House Keeping” as opposed to the prior decoding of “House Repair”. Everything fit into place quite neatly and unexpectedly; and I was able to close out another mystery. Charles Ferren Hopkins (1842-1934) and John Robertson Hopkins (1844-1885) were sons of Nathan Hopkins (1811-1889) and Ann Wilson. Hetty Ann Van Duyne (1846-1930) and Elizabeth Ellen Van Duyne (1847-1892) were daughters of Abraham B. Van Duyne (1823-1897) and Caroline Morrison (1824-1903). Carol Hopkins, several years ago, had shared Hopkins genealogies with me which helped, now several years later, to solve this mystery. Dick Van Duyne

[I think those are the titles] I am looking for any sources of information about the Rockway Cornet Band. I found references to them (1883, 1884) in some issues of the Dover Iron Era and Morristown Jerseyman newspapers. I have not done a complete search for them, just started with a few issues. I am interested in their history or any piece of information that exists. One theory I am looking into is: The first director of the Bloomingdale Cornet Band [Alfred Bedson] was living in Rockway during the 1880 census. I suspect he was a member of the Rockaway Cornet Band if it was in existence in 1880, although there may be no way to prove it. Just thought I would ask. Dave Wisneski Pequannock, NJ

After finding the mention of the Rockaway Cornet Band (so far 1884 and 1883 in the Jerseyman and the Dover Iron Era), I am on the search to find out if the Rockaway band existed in 1880, and the possiblilty that Alfred Bedson was a member (or his son, Thomas "Fred" Bedson). 1. RE: [NJMORRIS] Civil War info
    2. Joan M. Lowry
    3. Alice Try the NJ State Archives. The Guide to their collections says: "The State Archives will search for references to soldiers in the published Civil War roster (mentioned above) and in the compiled muster rolls.** There is also an extensive, unindexed collection of manuscripts relating to the war. ..." "** The State Archives will answer requests by mail regarding this collection." Note that the Guide is a few years old now, and I believe that the Archives may be handling email queries, as well. Also, they may have additional information on their new, extensive website. http://www.state.nj.us/state/darm/links/archives.html Good Luck. Joan Joan M.
