Among the very early immigrants to the colonies were French Huguenots who fled to other countries inc. England & the Netherlands to escape religious persecution, took on Dutch names and/or spouses, then came to America with Dutch or English colonists. Examples include Vincent Rongion/Runyon m. Bouchierre/Boucher. The more genealogy I do the more I realize data that appears to be set in concrete is not necessarily so. For example, published biographies of two of my ancestors or relatives indicate they were "descended from a Frenchman who came with Lafayette and fought with him in the Revolution". He may well have been of French descent & fought with Lafayette (as did everyone else in Morris Co, NJ; those who didn't support the Revolution found it in their best interests to leave before they were expelled or otherwise.) However, said ancestor (whom I'm not going to name until I'm sure - well, "sure") may have been the grandson of a Frenchman who immigrated to the colonies decades earlier. After years of research I'm learning to take everything with a grain of salt & enjoy working on the big puzzle, realizing I may never find all the ancestors I seek. But I sure enjoy all the nice e-friends & distant cousins I've met while learning to smile & be patient! It's a fun game & hobby, not something to take too seriously. Amazing how so many relationships have gradually become clear & pieces fall into place unexpectedly. For example, all those unfamiliar neighborhood families of 1800 Randolph Twnp have turned out to be related in one way or another - and generally in several ways. Thanks Ann, I was aware of the facts you presented. My problem is there are very few records for NJ outside of NJ. What the LDS has is restricted and can only be viewed at Salt Lake City. So the only way I would be able to look at any records is to go. Hi Friends, I have found a "hint" that the John Cook, who is my ggggg great grandfather, may be the son of Hendrick Van Der Cook. Anyone have any info to share on this family? I have listed a Cook family bible on www.biblerecords.com. The people are the family of this John Cook, children and second wife as well as some nieces and nephews. Here's hoping someone knows something, Maryann
Hi, Please grant me one more request. I am having a hard time getting email to you, it keeps coming back. So will try one more time. You supplied the name of James's parents. I would appreciate it, if you would check for his Father's Parents. Charles H. Tunis, b: 1839, Morristown. Maybe 1840 or up census would have his parents. If I can get that I would probably be able to find the rest of the family. Thanks for all you do.. Lea

Any help would be great! thank you, Duane Hi Duane, Well not sure what you are looking for, but here is what I came up with on a quick search: Oh my goodness, I can't believe it! Your Ikes in 1870 live four houses down from my NJ ancestors!!! My ancestors are listed as Egnot Sheazer & family on the 1870 census (but is usually spelled Shazer or Shasser or Schassar, etc). That is so neat, our ancestors knew each other!! :) In the 1870 census, I have an Isaac Ike, age 45 (born in 1824) living in Roxbury, Morris County, New Jersey. He is a farmer. He is living with Julia age 42, Mary age 21, Jacob age 19, Sarah age 14, Edward age 5. There is also a Jacob Ike, age 81 living with them. This could be Isaac's father or grandfather? There is also another Isaac Ike in the 1870 census living in Frankford, Sussex Co., NJ. He is age 25, born in 1844 in New Jersey, and is living with a George (?) Ike age 54, Sarah Ike age 52, Johnas(?) Ike age 18, George E. Ike age 12. They live next door to an Albert Ike age 28, Caroline Ike age 26, Edgar Ike age 1 and a Laurie(?)E. age 8. Not sure if these are yours or not, but thought I'd throw them in too. In the 1880 census, it looks like your Isaac remarried, he is listed as still living in Roxbury, Morris, NJ age 55 but his wife is now Margrett(?) age 46, they live with Isaac's son Edward G. Ike age 15, Herburt Hoole age 16 listed as 'step son', Luther O. Hoole age 14 step son, Iathma Hoole age 12 step daughter, Elsworth Hoole age 5 step son. There are also many people listed as 'boarders' with them. Listed in the 1887-1888 Dover, New Jersey Directory is an Isaac A. Ike, Location 1 is "Randolph c. Elliot". Isaac A. Ike is also listed in the 1890-1891 Dover, New Jersey Directory. He is listed as a 'laborer' and Location 2 is "Randolph Avenue Corner Blackwell." There is an Isaac Ike listed in the 1850 Lafayette Township, Sussex County, New Jersey census, but no image is available so I don't know who was with him. There is also an Isaac Ike listed in the 1860 Roxbury Township, Morris County, New Jersey census, but no image is available for that one either. Hope some of this helped! Happy hunting! Kerri

By coincidence, I found the answer to your question last night, taking an idle moment to check out Spencers in the 1850 census. So you picked a good time to ask your question. Samuel Spencer and Prudence Mulford of Chatham had a daughter, Julia A. She was 19 in 1850 when the census taker went through. Samuel Spencer 1795-1866 was the son of William Spencer and Apphia (Affie) Genung. A lot of their lines have been traced ― Genung, Lyman, Hall. Julia was named for her aunt, Julia Ann (Spencer) Ashbee (d, 1843), youngest child of Wm and Affie. >>> "Donna DeVoe" <devoe@le-win.net> 02/05/04 07:32PM >>> Isaac Ike b. 1824 NJ. d. 1906 NJ. bur. in Presbyterian Cem, Sucussanna, NJ. marr. The name looks Dutch colonial. Early Dutch followed the pattern of using their father's first name as their second name. (or they used the place they came from, hence all the "vans", or sometimes their occupation.) Tunis is a Dutch first name, so you might check New Amsterdam sources, or Bergen County sources. Many of the Dutch family in Morris County came up (that is south) the Passaic settling in north Hanover, Montvale, and other areas in the north side. >>> <KBar4616@aol.com> 02/05/04 06:30PM >>> Hi Lea! I forget where I found this; if it was here, then please forgive the duplication. I got a kick out of the railroad maps, as all of my Morris County ancestors worked in the mines or on the railroads. http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/rrhtml/rrmap.html Janet

Hello, Fellow Researchers, I am trying to find the name of the first wife of my ggggg great grandfather, John Cook, of Whippany. All I know for sure is that he and she are the parents of Jemima Cook, who m. Jacob Halsey, and Mary ( Polly ) Cook, who m. Jacob Green, the Rev. Jacob Green's nephew. Other children were Ann, m. Peter Sloat, and David, m. a Baldwin. Mary Alling, w/o General Pruden Alling calls herself aunt to these children. John's children by his second wife, Mabel Johnson ( d/o Alexander ) , were Samuel ( Mary Coe ), John, Phebe ( m. Millard Coddington), Timothy, Sarah, and Alexander. I need the names of John Cook's parents, as well. All I know is he does not appear to belong to either Ellis Cook family. I know a lot about this family, but not where they came from. Here's hoping someone out there knows more than I do. Maryann
