    2. In a message dated 2/7/04 8:56:48 AM Eastern Standard Time, jule@iowatelecom.net writes: You supplied the name of James's parents. I would appreciate it, if you would check for his Father's Parents. Charles H. Tunis, b: 1839, Morristown. Maybe 1840 or up census would have his parents. If I can get that I would probably be able to find the rest of the family. Thanks for all you do.. Lea Hi Lea, Ok I found on the 1850 census: BENJAMIN, Stout(?) C., age 85, M, Farmer, born in NJ TUNIS, Stephen W., age 32, M TUNIS, Mary age 44, F SPENSER(?), Sarah M, 18, F TUNIS, Charles H., age 10, M. I would assume from this that Stephen and Mary were Charles' parents, and that Stout Benjamin was Mary's father and they were living with him. Not sure about the Sarah. Of course, that's all assumption unless you find something else to support it. I also found a birth record on the LDS site for a Carry Tunis (female), born February 13, 1863 to a Stephen W. Tunis and wife Sarah J. Tunis... in Hanover, Morris New Jersey. This could mean that Mary was not Stephen's wife, or maybe she was, and she died and he remarried a Sarah J. (this record was extracted from the records in the area, not submitted by members of the church.)

    3. For morris county, I think parts survived in 1875, and most or all for 1885 and 1895. I have not checked 1905 and 1915 but I believe all of morris county exists for those years. I know morristown library has them, as I think NJ archives in Trenton, other libraries her ein NJ have parts of them. I am not aware of any county wide index for any state census for morris county. There might be some for individual townships but I am not aware of any offhand. Exec: Elisha BEACH, David THOMPSON. Wit: Samuel WILLS, James HOPKINS, and John RIGGS. Proved 2 Feb 1779 Liber 21 pg 33." Who was John Hambler/Hamler's father? Who were his children's children, etc. and spouses? Is he related to the * Hamler who was married to Anna Elizabeth Schmidt Bapt. 01 Mar 1713, NY? ["The Palatine Families of NY- 1710," by Hank Z. Jones Jr.] Johannes ("Hans") Hamler was b. 1713 in Gemingen, Germany>NY>Somerset Co., NJ. There are many of the same first names in Johannes's family as there are in Anna (Schmidt) Hamler's children's names: Andrew HAMLER Mary HAMLER Eva HAMLER Jacob HAMLER Peter HAMLER Nicolas HAMLER Elizabeth (Elisabeth) HAMLER Eva Hammler was Johannes's mother's name; Andrew Hamler appears in early NJ Tax Lists (1778, Somerset Co. where the Nicholas Hammler family came to live after arriving at the Port of New York) & I have a g-Uncle named Andrew Hamler; and Nicholas was Johannes's brother's and father's name. Several of us have been working on this conundrum for a long time. My GGrandfather was William H. Hamler (1807, Sussex Co, NJ - 1854, Sussex Co, NJ) Don't know who his father was but his father and he were all born in Sussex County, NJ; and my father, the late (John) Kenneth Hamler, was born in Morris County, NJ in 1908. Thanks for any tips and advice! Kathleen

    3. Kevin, I have a "smidgen" of "Dutch" blood,... my great-grandmother was a Van Etten whose family came from Ulster Co NY... and presumably descended from the first Van Etten , Jacob Jantsen of the Dutch era and area .. But am curious a to why you say to read the book "Daily Life in Rembrandt's Holland"? A few of list have commented on the genealogy "hobby"... and it is fun, and the best parts are finding an unusual "story" about one of ones' ancesstors who came to some disreputable ends. My husband and I have three or four of thsoe ....so it's amazing , isn't it, they we turned out so well! 9:-) Jeannette

    2. Hello Jeannette; I recommend the book as the time period is roughly 1600-1660, when the early Dutch settlers left Holland and came to New Amsterdam. I purchased a used copy at Abebooks.com. I have found the Dutch fascinating and enjoy reading and learning about them. Take care, Kevin

    3. Hi Kevin and gang, I just checked on the census again. None of these families has any connection to me, but I tweaked my interest. The families are all in the middle of the census returns for Chatham (pages 340+). Many of them had just arrived ― having 3 year-olds born in Martinique and most of them had lands valued at $3,000, well above average. Some names: ?ere, Victor, 38, Gentlemen Ernest duChamp, 34, and family, Anna 3, born on Martinique, Louisa 3 months, born NJ Reynal Beaupland age 66, born Guadaloupe. and family De Gage Martinique Massias REgna Leo Duchamp It makes Chatham seem more exotic. And as for the mysterious Charles Locander, who color pencil sketch of the Ashby house in Livingston is in my g grandmother's autograph book? 1882. What was he doing in Livingston? Wilson

    2. Of course, the true joy of genealogy lies in the surprises. I never knew I had Dutch ancestors until about 4 years ago, and although I grew up in Morris County, my family moving there in 1962, I had no idea my ancestors had been among the earliest settlers. (If anyone else has Dutch blood, I strongly recommend "Daily Life in Rembrandt's Holland".) This is my family tree: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=kevrik Take care, Kevin

    3. Dutch-English-French names did mix. Waldron and Livingston, for instance, appear to be families that were in both the Low Countries and England. Sneden is reputed to have been Snowden (although I cannot find any evidence of that pro or con). The meaning is Snow Mountain. In Morris County, some genealogies give the name Courter or even Courtier as being French, when the name is Dutch, coming from Koerte ("of Kurt"). Genung, suprisingly, is French, going back to a Huguenot Jean Guenon. (Jean married a Sneden.) Guenon meant in its earlier forms, "companion", but later came to mean the monkey or ape the accompanied musicians, then just "ape". Sorry Genung cousins for letting the ape out of the bag. And, speaking of the French, I noticed a whole group of families in Chatham (or Hanover, I forget now), from Martinique. What was the story there? Wilson Brown

    1. Re: [NJMORRIS] "Dutch", "English" roots
    2. Hello Wilson; If these families were Protestant, they were most likely refugees from the French sugar islands. When the Edict of Nantes was revoked, a wave of immigrants washed up on US shores as you know. The isles had a reputation for leniency, but the handwriting was on the wall. I believe this happened in the 1790's; I'm doing this off the top of my head. They came into NYC and I believe a number founded New Rochelle. That would be interesting if a 'colony' was founded in Morris County. Take care, Kevin
