    1. [NJMORRIS] Obit for Charles Digory Brower [Hopper/Mead]
    2. Dave Wisneski
    3. Came across this unusual obit for Charles Digory Brower. The following is from a Feb 15, 1945 "Butler Argus" newspaper article: Charles Digory Brower, "King of the Arctic" Well Known Here, Dies in Alaska Charles Digory Brower, know to his eskimo neighbors as "King of the Arctic" and well known in the Twin Towns of Butler and Bloomingdale, died recently at Point Barrow, Alaska, where he had resided since 1893 to get away from civilzation. He was born in East Orange and was 82 years of age. Mr. Brower was a cousin of the late Charles Hopper and also to Wilton G. and Marcus L Mead of Kinnelon. He was the first white man to live at Point Barrow, Alaska, and survived temperatures of 60 degress below zero, housed himself in igloss and learned to relish frozen raw meats and fish. He visited the Twin Towns last summer to renew old aquaintances. He had served as United States Commissioner, and recently was a member of Selective Service Board No. 21 which covered an ice coated area of 55,000 square miles. ----------------------- Dave Wisneski

    3. Since I raised this whole question to begin with, let me offer another suggestion from my research since posting this query. The New Jersey State Archives http://www.njarchives.org/links/webcat/queries/sestat01.html will provide inter-library loan for any state censuses where they hold duplicate rolls. If you are near a public library that participates in an inter-library loan program, perhaps they can help you secure the roll(s) you want. In my case, I called Detroit Public Library and queried them about assisting. The head of the circulation department told me to contact NJ State Archives to find out what their policy was. So I called NJ State Archives (609) 292-6260 (general information) and asked for the department which maintains the state census records on microfilm. I spoke with a helpful woman who checked on the census rolls I was looking for. We determined which ones they would provide through inter-library loan (based on whether they had duplicate rolls) and she told me there would be no charge FROM THEM for requesting them (however Detroit Public Library will charge me a handling fee, so be sure to ask your library if there are any charges). She told me I could keep the rolls for a month and suggested I request one at a time so I would have the maximum time to devote to one roll before I had to return it. I called Detroit Public back, gave them the information and the circulation department head told me he would follow up on it and promised to call me back if there were problems. Since I've heard nothing, I assume the roll I wanted has been ordered. Hope this helps. Debbie "Karen L. Day" wrote: > I've already did that search, there aren't any State Census online. 3. I've already did that search, there aren't any State Census online. The only census online is the Federal (pay sites such as Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com...and LDS free 1880 Census Lookups). You have to go to one of those located to view the State Census, which are not indexed by the way. If you don't live close to one of those places, you can either rely on SKS or fee-based lookup services. 2. I was recently bidding on e-Bay (unsuccessfully) for copies of the Morris Area Genealogical Society newsletter from Vol. 7, 1994. If you will send me a snail mail contact (off-list, please), I'll be glad to send you a stamped return envelope, and either reimbursement or a contribution to MAGS. Thanks. Wilson DeCamp
