    1. [NJMORRIS] Fowarded Cemetery Story
    2. George Van Riper
    3. Subject: [TriCounty] Tri-County Bad News Resent-Date: Thu, 5 Oct 2000 13:46:10 -0700 Resent-From: [email protected](this is Chemung Co. NY, Bradford Co.& Tioga Co. ,Penn.) Date: Thu, 5 Oct 2000 16:45:28 EDT From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Hi All, In Sullivan Township there is an old burial ground of the Baker family on Route 6 just west of the Bradford County/Tioga County boundary. At one time it contained about 30 to 40 tombstones, never recorded. Some years (decades) back the landowner bulldozed the stones into the hedge row where they have been picked off over time. Yesterday I went by and to my horror saw that a house is being built directly on the burial ground. Its foundation has penetrated the cemetery and without doubt disentombed some of the burials. I called a couple of the township officials this morning. They, of course, had no knowledge that this was a burial ground and are as distressed as any of us. I am sure the persons building the house are also not aware that they are on top of, actually in, a cemetery. I doubt anything can be done. But my purpose is only to remark on the tragedy. I did point out to the township officials that a listing of the lost and unmarked burials of Sullivan Township is on my site. This is probably incomplete but was done to the best of my knowledge on unmarked burials. Now they will print it out and look at it. But the horse is out of the barn - or rather the graves are out of the ground. This same thing should be done for every township and the responsible authorities made aware before another such disaster occurs. Joyce M. 1. [NJMORRIS] Re: [NJBERGEN] Mourison/Alyea/Kiersted/Morris and Bergen
    2. Have you ever tried to match up the deed description with current maps? I have had this question several times so I will try to answer how I do it. If you find errors in my explanation let others know by posting information. I use the software Deedmapper but you do not need the software. You can just use graph paper and a protractor. Supplies You need graph paper a protractor a ruler 10 spaces to an inch Example N10W10c25l My line would be going to the top left of the page 1.25 inches at the 10 degree angle Example S5W5c My line would then starting at my last ending point and go to bottom left of the paper at 5 degree angle 1/2 an inch Sometimes it will say N5.25W2c3l = North 5 degrees 25 minutes West 2 chains 3 links. 100 minutes = 1 degree, 100 links = 1 chain. When you come back to the beginning you should have a filled in shape if you are lucky. >From that shape and the roads, rivers, mountains, cemetery as my points I go to my USGS maps. I take clear plastic and make a copy of shape and place on USGS map and mark my Norht line on plastic. I believe you can go to USGS on line and order maps for your area. They are about $2 to $3 a map. I might have 40 maps that cover all of Northern NJ, Southern NY and eastern PA. They have houses, cemeteries, roads, mountains, rivers etc. on them. Keeping my map facing N I place the clear plastic over the map and match up the points. To me if you do not search for deeds you are missing out on the fun part of genealogy. Genealogy is not the collecting of names from other people who may be correct or in error but it is to see where the person was born, lived, prayed and died and was buried. Judy Ullman The maps I have on the wall which I use the most are the ones titled: Pompton Plains, Wanaque, Boonton, Caldwell, Paterson, Ramsey, Hackensack and Park Ridge. This covers the area that my families settled and did not leave for 350 years.

    2. The following deeds has the Catherine Alyea, wife of Henry Mourison, still alive in 1846, Wm. L Mourison and wife Mary, selling property, and probably preparing to leave for MI. Catherine Alyea Mourison does not appear in MI in 1850 with either the Benjamin and Zebediah Zeluf family or with William L. Mourison. Could she have died or moved into the home of William Stiles or Henry Collard? The 75 acres is part of the land that Henry Mourison owned from the death of his father in 1787-1789 until 1822 when the copies I have of tax records stopped. 1846 Deed Book L4, p 266+ 5 June 1846 Catherine Morrison of Pequanock William Morrison and Mary, his wife, of Pequanock sells to John J. 1. [NJMORRIS] Ebenezer Byram according to Sayre
    2. Wilson B.Brown
    3. I've had a chance to check the Mortimer Freeman Sayre, Brown and Sayre Ancestry, 1971 to see what they indeed said about Ebenezer Byram. The book is set from typescript, without lines or boxes or normal genealogical numbering, and it sure does look like they have Ebenezer marrying Phebe Dodd, but closer examination of it and other charts indicates that they are making a connection through a daughter of Ebenezer Byram, Annie Byram. The chart looks like they have her marrying Peter Condict (1744-1774), beyond that I dare not follow. Indeed, I cannot follow that chart. I am descended from Thomas Sayre and John Brown and the early Freemans, but in very different ways from Mortimer. I find the whole lot of them fascinating, but personally I probably would have found the High Puritanism unbearable.

    2. Judith Courter Ullman Any corrections would be appreciated. NYG&BR, Jan. 1958, p 2, 3 & 4, Some Descendants of Kierstede Family of NJ by William Pryor states that Henry Mourison m Caty Alyea and was the son of Jacob Mourison and Margrita Kierstede. William Pryor used as his source for this information a manuscript by Walter Beach Plume. After studying the following Morris County deeds and wills I have reached he following conclusion. Henry Mourison b 1752 d 1835 is the son of Hendrick Mourison d abt 1787 not Jacob Mourison and Margrita Kierstede. He lived in Pequanock his entire life according to deeds and tax records. I have about 12 other deeds involving Henry Mourison that I have not been able to enter yet. His family all moved to MI except Henry Collerd and Sally Mourison his wife and William Stiles and Mary Mourison his wife. Both Hendrick and Henry signed with a big M. The recorder of the deeds did not always use the big M and sometimes has signed with X or a cross. There is one other problem I have with the Henry Mourison and Caty Alyea family. They named none of the children after the Alyea family. This is unusual. This is Hendrick Mourison's family. 2. I am posting this message as a suggestion from SKS of Essex County List. I have been searching for my Ggrandmother, she has the uncommon surname of TEARE. I have a possible match of a Phillip TEARE who died in Denville, Morris November 1967, as her brother. Would SKS be willing to check this obit next library visit? Char CALIFORNIA

    1. [NJMORRIS] Or. Co, Morris Co. Dun, Sayer, Runyon, Carpenters
    2. Re: the Dunn site. I just got there myself and was too lazy to leave a message. Guess you have inspired me to go back and do it. I am looking for a PHINEAS DUN, who apparently died in Goshen, Or. Co. NY in 1788. He may be related to my ELIZABETH RUNYON (dau of RICHARD of Morris Co.)(NOTE: named in her father's will as deceased with a surviving child in 1775). Elizabeth RUNYON married about 1774 one MOSES CARPENTER. Moses CARPENTER was probably from Goshen, NY as he buys property in Orange Co. from a SAMUEL SAYER from Morris Co, NJ. in ab. 1774. (DEED) Next record I find is he baptizes his dau, ELIZABETH RUNYON CARPENTER in 1775. (Bapt. Goshen Pres. Church). Then he takes a mortgage out on this Or. Co. property (MORT) (apparently after his wife died, maybe before he was borrowing on a handshake, my rationale is based on the fact that she she was related to NJ Sayers. Next he remarried Hannah Smith of Or. Co., then he sells his property to JAMES SAYER (DEED). Then he buys more property in Or. Co. in Warwick. Then Aaboput 10 years later, (Or. Co. NY wills) I find him as the Adm. of the estate of PHINEAS DUN of Goshen will made Dec 26,1788 probated Jan 9,1789. Dun children mentioned: Zeruiah and Elizabeth wife Anna, witnesses: CALVIL SHEPARD and EZRA DOTY. So why does he adm. the will of Phineas Dun? Because the NJ Dunns and Runyons are related? (I have seen lots of such relationships.) Or, is he or his new wife somehow related to them, or just (obvious deathbed will - see dates) a helping hand? There are other DUNS listed in Warwick, Orange Co, NY in the 1790 census, and also an Anne Dunn. Additionally, since I have discovered all of the above, in my grandmother's pictures I have finally identified the scribbled name on the back as "A Dun." One photographer told me that this picture MAY be a photograph of a charcoal drawing and that it probably was one of a pair of wedding pictures. This picture was in the "stuff" of my grandmother who had been descended from the RUNYONS thru the Melvins, Or. Co. Wisner/Carpenters, Carpenter/Runyon, Runyon/VanCourt lines. Any light shed on this subject would be greatly welcomed. Sum up: 1. Who was Phineas Dun d. 1788-89 Goshen, NY? 2. Who was A. Dun, young lady in my large picture? Phoebe in CA Searching: ORANGE CO, NY: Moses Carpenter, b.1751, son of John and Ruth (Coe) ?CARPENTER m. 1st. Elizabeth Runyon from Morris Co., NJ, 2 nd. Hannah Smith from Or. Co., NY THOMPSON Mary Thompson dau of James and Marah (McDowell) m. Capt. John WISNER, Jr. Long Island, NY or RI: Ruth Coe, John Carpenter Onondaga Co. Carpenter, Wisner (Munro, Reed, Redman) Wayne, Ontario, Chautauqua Co., NY: MELVIN and WISNER MI, IA, OR: MELVIN, WISNER

    3. Hi Judie, I don't have specific information on Caleb Campbell but I have seen the Campbell surname in files in the Salisbury, NC (Rowan Co.) Public Library. They have a large genealogy section with much on the settlers from the PA/NJ area. They also have a collection called the McCubbins Files that contain a transcription of old deeds and other records by a local woman in the 1930s or 40s. The files, if I recall correctly, are filed aphabetically by surname. I pulled the Campbell file several years ago when looking for associations with the Hall family. The library also has information on the local churches. Sorry, I don't have their phone #. They are located on Innes St. in Salisbury, NC. Hope this helps some. Best of luck, Linda K in NC -----Original Message----- From: Judie Caroleo <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Sunday, October 01, 2000 10:58 AM Subject: [NJMORRIS] Introduction >Hello Listmembers, > My name is Judie Hodgson Caroleo and am new to Morris County searches.
