    3. Stephen Grover was the minister the baptized Grover Cleveland and for whom he was named, but was not a relative. Ministers names turn up frequently as namesakes. Lots of George Whitfields. One of my wife's kin spent several years researching the background of Egerton Ryerson, believing the Egerton Ryerson Young was a descendant when he was merely the son of a devout Methodist preacher who greatly admired Egerton Ryerson. When Pequannock Township was founded in 1740 it covered about 1/3 of present day Morris County and included lands in the present day municipalities of Town of Boonton, Township of Boonton, Borough of Butler, Township of Denville, Township of Jefferson, Borough of Kinnelon, Borough of Lincoln Park, Township of Montville, Borough of Riverdale, and Township of Rockaway. Whether or not they are "reliable" depends on some other factors. Remember that a book is only a collection of information that was taken from someplace else. The info in the book is ONLY as reliable as the sources from which it compiled. If there are no references cited in the book, then the book is not a reliable source. If they are cited, you have to go to THOSE sources and interpret them. If your interpretation matches that in the.book, then the author probably copied it correctly. If you and the author disagree, then you must find a way to resolve it. Information gathered years ago might have been proven incorrect in later years. Because an author (let's say Munsell just for an example) lists a family ancestry line that was written 100 years ago, does not mean that it is accurate. Munsell only wrote what was there - he didn't verify every fact in the book. If you want to be specific, there IS such a case in the History of the Randolph Twp (MOTT family - the "Baltimore origin" is waaaay off) that has since been proven incorrect. I'm sure Munsell also has similar cases. Should you use these as sources? Of course you can and they might be the only source you have for a while. Just be sure to look at the references from which it was compiled. Good luck --- Rich in nH

I am guessing it is one of the following two editions of the same title. Since the web page has a copyright notice for Brianne Kelly-Bly, and she is the volunteer coordinator for the Morris Co. website, I am sure she can verify this and perhaps update the page with some additional details to identify the book. That is probably: Original publication: History of Morris County, New Jersey, with illustrations and biographical sketches of prominent citizens and pioneers. New York : W.W. Munsell & Co., 1882. Morristown, N.J. : Morris County Historical Society, 1967. I am not familiar with the Randolph Twp. publication. I have a copy of the reprinted History of Morris County and have not heard of any reported errors, but I think Brianne or others would be more aware its reliability. I remember hearing about an Asa Hall who lived in Butler, 7 miles south of Butler, for many years. I will check with some of our older people in town. As for the Newfoundland Cemetery, it's in Morris County, Jefferson Township. The boundary of Morris and Passaic counties is the Pequannock River, which flows through Newfoundland with most of the locality in West Milford Township of Passaic County; part of Newfoundland is also legally in Rockaway Township of Morris County. The old Newfoundland Methodist Church is on NJ Route 23 south, originally Paterson-Hamburg Turnpike since the early 1800's, and that's where the cemetery remains although the old church is now a professional building. The present church is located in the West Milford section of Newfoundland about a 1/2 mile away. 3. Posted on: Morris County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/NJ/Morris/1714 Surname: Kimble, Vanderhoof ------------------------- I am looking for any information on Edwin Kimble d. 1918 age of 33, married to Lilly Jemima Vanderhoof. She later remarried Asa Hall. Edwin & Lilly are supposedly buried in the Newfoundland Cemetery. I have contacted the United Methodist Church who was on the cemetery site. If anyone has any information on Edwin or Lilly, please let me know. I was told the cemetery was in Passaic Co, but the new church is in Morris County. Thanks, for any info you can give.

    3. John Reading surveyed the early Morris County area in about 1715. Parts of his journal are quoted in Munsell and Thayer. Would anyone know if these were ever published and are available to read? He mentions spending the night at 'Mawris Mawrison's' house after surveying near the forks of the Whippany and Rockaway Rivers, which is dangerously close to where Hendrick Mourison lived.(Munsell p.332)Mahalo , Kevin
