    1. ROCKAWAY RECORDS
    2. Margie Havice
    3. Greetings: I have the book ROCKAWAY RECORDS OF MORRIS COUNTY, N.J. FAMILIES, by J. Percy Crayon, published 1902. I checked it out of Sutro Library, San Francisco and can have it til the 31st of Jan. Sometimes they let me re-check a book out and sometimes they don't. They have a Genealogical Index of many families and also simple cemetery records & some special things, like Church members 1758 to 1808, then 1808 to 1832; Capt. Josiah Hall's Co; Gen. Wind's Will; Early pew holders. Maybe you all have seen or have this book, but I would do look-ups. Margie in Half Moon Bay, CA

    2. Hello List: I am coming up empty trying to find information on Phebe Saloma Tebo's family. She was born in Roxbury 6 Mar 1851. Her parents are found in IGI as Jacob and Mary. There is a sister Margaret, DOB unknown. The family relocated to Iowa a few years after Phebe's birth. There are many Tebos from the area so hope maybe someone out there can help. Thanks in advance. 2. Paul Bunnell
    3. Hi All, I would like to thank everyone who responded to my plea and search for my ancestor, Benjamin Bunnell/Bonnell/Bonnel/Bunnel, etc. b. c. 1744 in Morris Co., NJ. We still have come up dry, but there must be a small source tucked away in a record that will reveal his marriage to Sarah Jones c. 1779 in NJ/NY/PA, or his parents which could by Thomas Bonnel of Morris Co., NJ d. 1790 (I have will) or Gershom Bunnell of Connecticut or ? I have his indictment in 1779 in Succasunna(sip) near Morristown, NJ for arrest for having British made counterfeit money on him. He shows up in August 1781 signing up with Benedict Arnold in the American Legion in NY, and attacks New London/Ft. Griswold, CT on 6 Sept. 1781. Later he, his wife and 2 children under ten years appears on refugee list leaving NYC in July 1783 for Nova Scotia. He is again listed in a discharge muster at Country Harbour in Nova Scotia 1784 from a South Carolina unit under Matthew Haines. He settles at Long Reach, Kings Co., New Brunswick 1786 and dies 17 Feb. 1828 at Greenwich/Westfield, New Brunswick, buried 19 Feb. 1828. The towns he lived in at New Brunswick (Greenwich & Westfield) might reveal where he lived in NJ? His wife Sarah/Sally John could have come from the Bergen Co., NJ Thomas/Edward Jones family. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for having such a wonderful and helpful site. Regards.......Paul Bunnell UE

    1. Pequannock Tax Lists 1778/80 Part One
    2. kevin and rika
    3. Pequannock Township Tax Ratables May 1778 and (February 1780) Originally from The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey Whole Number 169 Vol. 45 #1 by Kenn Stryker-Rodda Key: c-horned cattle ex-exempt h-horse(s) hh-householder p-pigs rc-riding chair (single axle carriage) sm-single man who works for hire sm&h- single man who keeps a horse u- acres of unimproved land £-amount out at interest cut-off- my copies are off-center and the right hand columns are sometimes missing data * on 1778 list; not on 1780 (entries on 1780 list); second set of facts in parenthesis refer to changes since 1778; unchanged items not noted (the way it is in the magazine) Numbers without letter(s) are acres of improved land that are taxed My addendum are noted "KR"; all else is from the magazine , and probably Mr. Stryker-Rodda's Fun Fact#1- 51 acres was estimated to be the minimum amount of land to feed a family of 6 ("A Dutch Family in the Middle Colonies" Firth Haring Fabend p. 91) Fun Fact #2-Altho the English traditionally preferred mutton, then beef, pork became the meat of choice in the colonies. Pigs required far less maintenance than cattle.("Everyday Life in Colonial America" Dale Taylor p.79) Pork seemed to preserve better by salting and brine than beef. The invention of refrigerated rail cars would propel beef to the forefront Fun Fact #3- Many animals were allowed to roam free. Brands and marks were recorded in the Pequanock Town Book from 1741, and strays were were routinely posted .(Some Early Records of Morris County, NJ" Stryker-Rodda)An example:"Jan. 15-1747 then came to Hendrick Mouerson a bay mare with a wite streak in her forehead and one wite foot behind and a short doock tale and asmall slit in the toop of each eare coming four years ould I thinck"(ibid p.24) Hendrick's Will of 1786 mentions a variety of animals "in the woods"of his farm. Not -so-fun-fact: Remember , there was a war on, and the army would winter at Morristown 1777 and after Dec.1, 1779-1780 (the coldest winter in the 18th century -"Colonial and Revolutionary Morris County" Theodore Thayer p.227). These are transcriptions of transcriptions, and subject to error; everyone is encouraged to check the original , available thru the LDS.NJ (and Morris County) is lucky, our tax records pretty much survived from 1778 until about 1822.When you consider the 1790-1820 NJ Federal Census did not, these become a valuable substitute. AND, is there anyone who might have records for them. Particularly, marriage records, 1740's. Thanks. Dick Carter [email protected]

    3. There was someone that mentioned Budd Valley that was changed to German Valley and then to Long Valley. Upon my questioning the sign along the road that reads German Valley now Long Valley about what happened to Budd Valley? An old map of the area has Budd Valley. My answer was that Budd Valley was the lower portion just west of Chester along Rt 24. Since the property was only owned by Budd and since he didn't live there it was decided to call it German Valley since they settled it. Not important but I thought it interesting. Where the town of Long Valley is situated was called Dutch Valley. The map has Budd Valley. Jean

    3. Greetings List, Can anyone on this list provide information or clues on a Frederick Keister b. 3 APR 1863, Morris Twp, Morris N.J.? The FamilySearch website lists an IGI that I have not seen yet, that indicates his father was William Keister, and that his mother was Catharine, no surname given. I'm wondering if he might be the father of my grandfather George F. Kister. I have George Kister's father as Frederick Kister, but have not found him and am wondering if someone decided to drop an "e". Thanks for any help George Davis

    1. [NJMORRIS] Hinchman-Noble papers
    2. I have received a copy of a bill of sale for two slaves, dated 3/5/1818. The full text (capitalization and punctuation are preserved) is as follows: Know all men by these presents that I John C. Dunham of the Township of Kingwood County of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey for the sum of one hundred Dollars in hand paid or received to be paid; have and do bargain and sell unto Guy M. Hinchman his Executors Administrators and Assigns a Female Slave named Renor Supposed to be about Twenty-nine years of Age also a Male Slave named George; which will be two years of age on the fourteenth day of this present month bound under the Late Law of the State aforesaid. To have and to hold to him the said Guy M. Hinchman his Heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns the above Female Slave named Renor a Slave for Life.  And I do Warrant and will defend <torn> Guy M. Hinchman in the peaceable possession of the above Slaves against me and all other persons whatsoever. Witness my hand and seal this fifth day of March in the year Eighteen Hundred and Eighteen. John C. Dunham Signed Sealed and dit: In presence of John H. Hinchman Lewis M. DeCamp <end of text> Presumably Lewis M. DeCamp is the Lewis Martin DeCamp who married Mary Hinchman, possibly Guy's sister. Guy Hinchman married Susan Grandon DeCamp, Lewis' first cousin. At the time that the document was executed, the Guy Hinchman family appears to have been living in Dover, Morris Co., and the Lewis M. DeCamp family in Newton, Sussex Co. This document is part of some Noble family papers (Guy's daughter, Sophronia, married Charles Edwin Noble) which were given to a relative of Betty Wendell of Las Vegas, NV.  She says that she would be happy to give the letters and papers to anyone that has a legitimate connection to the family.  If you are, or know of, a direct descendant in this line, please let me know, and I will put you in touch with Ms. Wendell. I have scanned the document, but cannot post it to the list, since our list won't handle attachments.  Please contact me directly if you would like a copy of the file. Wilson DeCamp Vienna, VA
