Greetings, I have many ancestors who were early settlers of what was known as 'German Valley' in Washington TWP prior to World War I (now frequently referred to as Long Valley). Among these ancestors are the Alpaughs, Apgars, Duffords, Trimmers, Wacks, Neighbor/Nachbars, Hoffmans, Philhowers, Cregars, Hartrums, and Fox/Fuchs. I am currently trying to learn more about my ancestor William Weyer (aka Wire,Wier,Weir) who was born c1800 and died in 1845 shortly after removing to Ohio. I suspect he is a descendant of a Conrad Wire who had a will recorded at Easton, PA in the late 18th century. One or more of Conrad's children reportedly removed to the German Valley during the late 18th century. I'd love to compare notes with anyone researching the Wire/Weyer family or any of the other families mentioned. Regards, Rick Novak

Hi List Members, Well OUCH - can't we all just learn to get along? I sent the "Subject Line" message to the mailing lists simply because I did not know the list owner of the Middlesex County list and over the years I've deleted the e-mail address for the owner of the Morris County list. I was not trying to start a debate. I was simply trying to let these "volunteers" know that the Subject line information had changed and there could possibly be a software problem since other mailing lists I subscribe to still hand the State/County prefix. I'm a dinosaur Information Systems manager of 30 years (gasp!) and I tend to notice these things. Please keep in mind that all the list owners on RootsWeb are volunteers. They take time from their own research to help the rest of us find our family history. RootsWeb, as a whole, also does a fantastic job for us. A recent server problem on their "Freepages" site resulted in a mixture of paid employees and volunteers spending their New Year's weekend recovering the information. I think I would have to come down on the side of the "put the prefix back" group. Presently I get mail from both the Morris and Somerset county lists. Morris uses ( or at least, used to use) a prefix, Somerset doesn't. I always know when I get mail from the Morris web...but many times have accidently deleted mail from the Somerset county web as it often comes across looking like junk mail.

Each listowner sets whether he/she wants a prefix in their list's subject line individually. Some have 'em, some don't. You might want to try a email/newsreader that allows filtering. If you sort your email into folders on the To: address, you begin to appreciate not having the extra space taken up by the prefixes in the subject line. Happy researching! The Rootsweb server which hosted the NJMORRIS list, became ill a few days ago. The Rootsweb staff are telling us they haven't fixed the problem yet, so they moved us to another server. The ones at USA.com use the MAPS spam filtering which cuts out about 75% of the spam coming to me. Bigfoot.com just started using the ORBS spam filter, that seems to cut out even more. Seeking info on Morris Co., NJ Days. Supposedly my ancestor, Thomas Day came to America from France. He served in the Rev. War and died in Morris Co., NJ. He had a son Cornelius Robinson Day who was born 13 September 1798 near Green Pond. He married Nancy Wetherholt or Weatherbolt who was also a native of New Jersey. Pequannock Township Tax Ratables May 1778 and (February 1780) Originally from The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey Whole Number 169 Vol. 45 #1 by Kenn Stryker-Rodda Key: c-horned cattle ex-exempt h-horse(s) hh-householder p-pigs rc-riding chair (single axle carriage) sm-single man who works for hire sm&h- single man who keeps a horse u- acres of unimproved land £-amount out at interest cut-off- my copies are off-center and the right hand columns are sometimes missing data * on 1778 list; not on 1780 (entries on 1780 list); second set of facts in parenthesis refer to changes since 1778; unchanged items not noted (the way it is in the magazine) Numbers without letter(s) are acres of improved land that are taxed My addendum are noted "KR"; all else is from the magazine , and probably Mr. Stryker-Rodda's Fun Fact#1- 51 acres was estimated to be the minimum amount of land to feed a family of 6 ("A Dutch Family in the Middle Colonies" Firth Haring Fabend p. 91) Fun Fact #2-Altho the English traditionally preferred mutton, then beef, pork became the meat of choice in the colonies. Pigs required far less maintenance than cattle.("Everyday Life in Colonial America" Dale Taylor p.79) Pork seemed to preserve better by salting and brine than beef. The invention of refrigerated rail cars would propel beef to the forefront Fun Fact #3- Many animals were allowed to roam free. Brands and marks were recorded in the Pequanock Town Book from 1741, and strays were were routinely posted .(Some Early Records of Morris County, NJ" Stryker-Rodda)An example:"Jan. 15-1747 then came to Hendrick Mouerson a bay mare with a wite streak in her forehead and one wite foot behind and a short doock tale and asmall slit in the toop of each eare coming four years ould I thinck"(ibid p.24) Hendrick's Will of 1786 mentions a variety of animals "in the woods"of his farm. Not -so-fun-fact: Remember , there was a war on, and the army would winter at Morristown 1777 and after Dec.1, 1779-1780 (the coldest winter in the 18th century -"Colonial and Revolutionary Morris County" Theodore Thayer p.227). These are transcriptions of transcriptions, and subject to error; everyone is encouraged to check the original , available thru the LDS.NJ (and Morris County) is lucky, our tax records pretty much survived from 1778 until about 1822.When you consider the 1790-1820 NJ Federal Census did not, these become a valuable substitute.
