It is my humble opinion that I believe I've cracked the code to sorting out the Haycock/Haycocks/Haykok/Haycook brethren of the era before 1830. All it took was getting snowed in and my computer being on the blink, which forced me to review the files the hard way --- manually and with no marshmallows in my hot chocolate! I have been able to link at least 14 pre-1830 families to two brothers - Daniel (born before 1757) and Thomas Haycock (born about 1743) of the Pompton area. Once I figured out that they were brothers and not father/son, the puzzle began to take shape very fast. With the help of some previously unknown death certificate info that a kind member sent to me about two months ago and some VR info that I collected months ago and never bothered to post, the later generations began to fall into place. It is not done yet, there are still several who are not atttached yet. However once I start looking at them as closely as I did the others I think they, too, will slide into place. If ANYONE is researching this line, or has any daughters who married into it, or sons who married the daughters (they are sparse in the pre-1815 years) - Please give me a nudge. This goes double if you and I haven't compared notes before. Primary area of residence for these families were Morris and Passaic Counties. A few were in Sussex, Bergen, and Essex Counties Some of the Haycocks are not related, but that's OK --- I can tell you if they are or not. Pressing onward ---- I need another good snowstorm I think. Many thanks and have a great weekend --- Rich in NH

Hi Frank - YOUNG is a tough family to crack in Morris County. I have been looking for Bethyer YOUNG(S)' parents for years. She was b. in 1805, married Robert C FRANCISCO in 1820, had probably 9 children and d in 1851 all in Morris County. Her parents have to be out there some place. Hello, Welcome to the list Frank. I am posting my response to the list because I think it interests several people. You have brought up a question I have been working on myself for some time. I can give you some answers but mostly, I'm afraid, I will add more questions. Jan Loyse was baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church at Brooklyn, NY, 6 October 1700, son of Jacobus and Elizabeth Loyse, sponsors Cornelis Lowysse, Grietje Tilburg. Jan is the Dutch equivalent of the English name John. In the early 1700s the Loyse spelling began to disappear, replaced with Losee in NY and Losey elsewhere, mainly NJ. According to Hurbert Furman Seversmith in his books "Colonial Families of Long Island, New York, Connecticut," Published in 5 volumes in 1939, this Jan/John Losey is the father of James Puff and John Jr. etc. Jannetje Brouwer was baptised in the Reformed Dutch Church at Brooklyn, NY, 8 January 1702, sponsors Steven Beduen, Maria, his wife; she was daughter of Willem and Martha (Boulten) Brouwer. Seversmith "(John) married Jannetje or Jane Brouwer who is believed to be the one baptised in the Reformed Dutch Church at Brooklyn, NY, January 8, 1702" and "He was a resident of Jamaica, NY until shortly before 1731, by that year he had removed to Mendham, NJ where he resided the rest of his life. A survey of his property was made January 9, 1748 by John Hampton, Deputy Surveyor; John Losey died in June, 1765 at Mendham and was probably buried there." It has been suggested to me by another researcher that the Brouwer family of NJ may have adopted Young as a surname. Name withheld as this was merely speculation. The will of John Young of Morris County, dated 23 March 1778 names several of John and Jane's children, ie: John, Elizabeth and Phillip. Their son James Puff Losey married Mary Seley in the First Presbyterian Church at Morristown, NJ 18 October 1750. Mary survived him and became the second wife of Jonathan Pitney, widower of Mary Losey. Mary (Seley) (Losey) Pitney was administratrix of the estate of Jonathan Pitney, 19 October 1778. James Puff and Mary had a son, also called James Puff, who is possibly the one who married Hannah Burwell, daughter of Adam Burwell. Bear with me as I add another cog to this wheel. John Losey, father of James Puff, had a brother William. William had a son Jacobus (James is the English equivalent of the Dutch names Jacobus). Seversmith p. 1872 "Jacobus, baptised in the Reformed Dutch Church at Jamaica, NY March 1, 1730, sponsor Jacobus Loosie. He was rated at Hanover, NJ in 1778, 1779 and in later years after his first cousin James Puff Losey had died. He is believed to have been the Captain James Losey who married a sister of the wife of Captain S. Baldwin, the last named Captain Baldwin having had a first wife who was aunt to one Robert Young (Proceedings of the New Jersey Historical Society, 4th Series, vol. VIII, p. 35). If so, Captain James Losey died January 20, 1809; his wife Hannah died in 1810 and was buried at Rockaway, NJ beside her husband. From the associations in the records it appears to be probable that the following were their issue: i Jacob, whose wife Nancy died 12 (gravestone) or 15 (church record) April 1809,aged 37. ii Joseph, of Rockaway in 1793. Proceedings of the New Jersey Historical Society, 4th Series, vol. VIII, p. 35 says Capt. S. Baldwin's niece married, as 1st wife of, Robert Young and Baldwin married Capt. Losey's sister. Jacobus is brother of Zebulon, father of Isaac Losey of Walpack. I would appreciate any additions, comments, suggestions or even arguments. Who was Robert Young? Is he related to John Young? Who is James Young who was a witness to the will of John Losey Sr. June 4, 1765? Which Losey did Capt. S. Baldwin marry? What is Baldwin's first name? This will introduce me, and at the same time ask for help. I descend from Morgan Young Sr., who is in E.H. Young's book "Our Young Family in America." I lived in Morris Co. for two years, about 1973-74, and liked it very much. I lived at Hickory Tree, just over the hill from Madison, as I remember. Lovely area. My principal interests in Morris Co. are the Young, Losey, and Mills families. I have a lesser, but real, interest in the families the Young women married into: Clark, Carrel, Miller, Drake, Lum, and Pitney. Right now I am looking into two problems. Problem 1. On the Randolph Patriots webpage at www.rootsweb.com/~njmorris/randolph.htm is the statement that James Puff Losey was the son of John Losey Sr. and Jane Young. Other information that I have suggests this is correct, even though all other sites show only Jannetje (Jane) Brouwer as John Losey Sr's. wife. Can anyone refer me to documentation of the marriage of John Losey Sr. and Jane Young? Problem 2. On the same page is the statement that Morgan Young Sr., who married Elizabeth Mills, is the son of Robert Young Sr. Again, other names found on the internet for this man are obviously wrong, but there's a chance this one is right. Can anyone refer me to documentation of the source of this statement? The webpage says this is all "readily found in the libraries of Morris County." Not so, when you live on the West Coast! Best regards to all. Frank Young
Cathy, I have seen the records for the First Presbyterian Church of Morristown, NJ. However, I only copied the pages that contained the names I am searching. On the title page is: "History of the First Presbyterian Church, Morristown, N.J." Part I No. 2154 Records of Trustees and Session From 1742-1882. This is a typed copy - not the original hand-written records. I found it at the DAR library in Washington, D.C. I'm sure there are other copies. Please try the internet. I did not see an address for the church. There is lots of family information - Baptisms, Marriages, and some Deaths. Hope this helps. Dear Cathy in California, You may be looking in the wrong place. In nearby Mendham I find: Bap. 4 Aug 1861, Esther, dau of Stephen Wray. Bap. 1 Nov 1863, William Laird, son of Stephen Wray. Bap. 5 Nov 1865, Ellen Jane, dau of Mr. John Wray. Bap. 2 Nov 1867, John Williams, child of John & Elizabeth Wray. This is from "The First Presbyterian Congregation, Mendham, Morris County, New Jersey, History and Records 1738-1938," by Helen Martha Wright. I think it's available on microfilm through any Family History Library of the Mormon church, but I could be wrong. The iron industry was big in that area at that time, but I don't find Wrays in any of the other books I have. Best regards. Frank Young
There is a record listed for the marriage of John Pipes and Jemima Harriman in 1760 in Crayon's book ( Rockaway Records of Morris Co. Page 240) Can anyone suggest where I might look for the original record of this marriage? Or did Percy use other than official records for these entries as well? I suspect the answer is that he used both, but can anyone tell me? Regards, Bob Pipes
I'm looking for a match for Amos Culver b 1784 among the Culvers of Schooleys Mountain - the Culverite religious sect. He doesn't fit into any of the Amos Culvers in the Collver/Culver Genealogy book. He first shows up about 1810 as the blacksmith of Westport, Essex Co, NY. Many Morris Co families (Moore, Dickerson, Hayward, Daniels) moved north to Essex Co in 1797 to settle on Judge Hatch's Brookfield Grant. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve
I am searching for records or any additional information of Thomas Mann, emigrant from England in 1775, married Margaret Bonham in Gloucester County, NJ Jan. 30, 1776, lived in Morris County (Schooleys Mountain) and later in Vernon Township, Sussex County, where most of their children were born: Abijah--born 16 Mar 1781; abt 1809 married Mary Conklin (born 4 Dec. 1783, Pequannock, Morris Co., NJ); Their children--Rebecca, Polly, Anna, Elizabeth, Mary, Thomas Abijah, Lucinda, Phineas, and Rachel were born in Vernon Twp, Sussex Co. between 1807 & 1824); Abijah died 12 May 1854 in Vernon Twp, Sussex Co., NJ and was buried in Mann Cemetery at Cherry Ridge, Sussex Co. NJ; Shuah Mann--born 15 Feb 1787 in Sussex County, NJ, married Nancy Oldham (born July 1/2 1789 in NJ). Their children--Thomas, Elizabeth, Horace, Abijah, Eleazer, Gordon O., Shuah, Jr., Amba, Austin D., Sidney, Nancy Jane, and Harvey Cole also were born in Sussex Co. NJ between 1808 & 1834. Except for Horace who died at age 2 months in NJ, the Shuah Mann family moved to Ohio before any of the children were married. Amba Mann (b. 10 Feb. 1777) in NY, but presumably grew up in NJ Elizabeth Thankful, Devious/Dervious, Prosper, & Amasa were also born to Thomas Mann & Margaret Bonham in New Jersey, but we do not have dates of their births and only sketchy records of their later lives. I would particularly appreciate any information re. Thomas Mann and Margaret Bonhams dates of death and places of burial. I would also like to know more about either Morris or Sussex Counties during the late 18th & early 19th centuries. Was "Schooleys Mountain" a town, an area, or a geographic feature? Is there any information available about the Mann Cemetery at Cherry Ridge in Sussex County? Does the Cemetery still exist? Why was it called "the Mann Cemetery"? I will appreciate it greatly if someone can help me in my search for any information that relates to Thomas & Margaret Bonham Mann or any of their descendants. LaVonne
Is anyone familiar with the Presbyterian Churches in Morristown? I am trying to locate church records for WRAY family which lived in that area in 1850's - 1870's. I found two churches in Morristown by searching via the internet: 1) 57 E. Park Place 2) 65 South Street. Is either of those churches old enough to possibly have records from that time period? Is there a specific individual (perhaps the Church Historian) who has been helpful to someone else? I would appreciate any ideas. Cathy in California
To all, Is anyone following the Miller clan? I have one Egbert Miller or two Egbert Millers. >From one source, Egbert Miller was the father of two daughters (at least): Flora Miller (1861-1931) married James M. Van Duyne. Catherine Miller (1877-1946) married Abraham A. Van Duyne. >From another pair of sources: Egbert Miller (1822-1911) married Jane Ann Hennion (1835-1900). My question is: Are these two different Egbert Millers or one Egbert Miller? Dick Van Duyne
I've recently posted the records from my EAKLEY Bible on Brianne's Morris Co. Page.
