    2. There are several noteworthy texts on Morris County with Munsell the most quoted. But a word of caution: Despite facts and some documentation, Munsell is an oral history that does contain many errors. It is a good starting point, though. Here are a few other reference books on Morris County: A History of Morris County, New Jersey, Embracing Upwards of Two Centuries, 1710-1913. 2 vols. New York, Chicago: Lewis Historical Publishing Co., 1914. Cunningham, John T., "Morris, Iron Backbone." This is New Jersey. New Brunswick, N.J.: Rutgers University Press, 1968. Macasek, Joseph J. Guide to the Morris Canal in Morris County. Morristown, NJ: Morris County Heritage Commission, 1996. Perrucci, Doreanne R. Morris County, the Progress of Its Legend. Woodland Hills, CA: Windsor Publications, 1983. Tuttle, Rev. Joseph Farrand, Annals of Morris County. 1869., n.d.

    3. A site new to me has started to put OCR scanned versions of county books on line. So far only Wm Shaw's book on Essex seems to be up, but under Morris County the Munsell book is listed. (I tried to call it up, but it didn't come, but it may be about to come out.) One warning on these OCR books: OCR has its own set of errors, rather distinct from those of a type-setter's misreading of handwriting or a typing mistake. Be aware of them in using this material -- plain becomes plam. That's ok with there, but if Nathaniel R becomes Nathaniel B or 1647 becomes 1641, there could be a problem. http://216.181.70.227/NJ/NewJersey.asp Noelle Van Pulis wrote: > Dan, > > There is a "History of Morris County, New Jersey," but not by Snell. 3. Dan, There is a "History of Morris County, New Jersey," but not by Snell. It was originally published by W.W. Munsell in 1882, and I have the 1967 reprint issued by the Morris County Historical Society. It has an index, but it is not an every-name index. It is described as a collaboration of 12 authors, with Edmund Drake Halsey (1840-1896) often being listed in older catalog records as the primary author. --Noelle, in Ohio At 11:45 AM 4/13/01 -0700, Dan Conner wrote: >I've seen where Snell has a history of Hunterdon & Somerset Counties, >and History of Sussex & Warren Co.'s. > >Question: Does Snell also have a history of Morris County? > >Thank you , >Dan C. > >_________________________________________________________________ >Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com > > > ******************************************************** Noelle Van Pulis (aka Mrs. E. 1. [NJMORRIS] MISENER, Lawrence, d, 1795 Morris Co.,. NJ
    2. All, Now, here is a mystery man. Lawrence MISENER was noted in 1793 when he was listed in the Mendham, Morris Co., NJ militia. with the name spelled Lawrence "Monsinger" He was listed adjacent to David Cook, who was his brother-in-law. A will prepared by Lawrence was dated 1791 and was probated in 1795. The will does not mention any children, only his wife, Sarah. who was an executor along with Daniel Cook (her father), Witnesse were Henry and David Cook (brothers) and Daniel Owen (perhaps an uncle). Lawrence's children were born in 1794 and 1795. Based on this scant info I would guess that he died a fairly young man who was married by 1791 and dead by 1795. Given Sarah's birth in 1771, I would calculate his birth as later than 1761, but earlier than 1771 His widow, Sarah (Cook) Misener (1771-1820), left NJ with her two young sons about 1803 and settled in upstate NY traveling with her sister, Hannah, and Hannah's hudband, Rev. Henry Axtell. In NY the name was spelled MIZNER which it has remained since. It appears that Lawrence was a wealthy man as his sons inherited a sizable sum of money upon coming of age. The area of Morris Co., NJ and surrounding Cos. have many MISENER's of varied spellings, however, as yey, there is not a connection to be found to Lawrence. Anyone interested in this surname, please contact me <[email protected]>. Best regards, Hugh

    1. [NJMORRIS] REVEREND HOOPER CUMMING
    2. Reverend Hooper Cumming was the Pastor at the Newark Second Presbyterian Church from 1811-1815. He was the Pastor at Albany's (NY) Third Presbyterian Church from 1817-1823. I am wondering whether he was a Pastor in Morristown or someplace else in Morris County prior to 1815. My ancestor ABIGAIL CHARLOT GILLESPIE, who lived in Morristown and Basking Ridge suddenly lived in Newark and then Albany. Call it an incredible coincidence but it was the same time as Reverend Cumming was in Newark and Albany. She was widowed at this time and perhaps he was family (can't figure out how) or she was just another Presbyterian 'groupie'! I recall once seeing an Ann Cumming married to a Marsh or a Charlot? Any tidbits are welcome! Thanks Melissa
