    1. [NJMON] Age of St. Joseph's church in Keyport
    2. In reply to Linda's query; The first Roman Catholic church in the Keyport area was Saint Joseph's which was completed and dedicated in 1854 despite antagonism toward Keyport area Catholics. Rev. John A. Kelly, pastor of St. Mary's in South Amboy, cared for the parish until 1876. St. Joseph's then received its first resident pastor, Rev. Patrick McGovern. A second church, of a much larger gothic style, was later erected and was dedicated on June 27, 1879. The original church was then converted into a two-room school. The third and present church was constructed and the first Mass celebrated there was on December 8, 1976. A small cemetery adjacent to the first church was obtained sometime during the time that the Rev. August G. Spierings served as pastor between 1977 - 1890. Source: "Upon This Rock" a new history of the Trenton Diocese, 1993 The cemetery was later moved across the street to a much larger property. A fire some years ago destroyed many of the records in the cemetery office. eBay frequently has postal cards for sale depiction the second church. There are two for sale, at the present time. One can just type in ebay.com on your search and then when it asks, What are you looking for? Enter the word Keyport. You will find a list of what is for sale about Keyport and scrolling down you will find the two cards for sale. Bob in Keyport
