    3. ROCKLAND COUNTY JOURNAL, FEBRUARY 25, 1899 OBITUARY Washington L. Hope Washington Lafayette Hope died at his home at Shrewsbury, N. J. on Monday, of pneumonia. He was born in New York, Aug. 4, 1824. His father, Reuben Hope, was one of the New York officials delegated to meet Gen. Lafayette when he visited this country by invitation of this Government. Mr. Hope was engaged in mercantile business at first, but afterward engaged in farming in Rockland County and then at Shrewsbury. Last September he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding. He was Grand Worthy Chief Templar and State Lecturer for the order. When the late Clinton B. Fisk ran for Governor of New Jersey on the Prohibition ticket Mr. Hope was a candidate for Congress on the same ticket. He had been a Baptist for more than forty years and was a deacon and Sunday school Superintendent of the Eatontown Baptist Church for twenty-five years. A widow and three sons survive him. The deceased was a brother or William P. Hope, of Haverstraw, one of the oldest residents of Rockland County, who will be ninety years old next June.
