Looking for children of James Bollen and his wife Elizabeth Godfrey. He was son of Capt. James-1 Bollen, who became Secretary of the Province of East Jersey in 1665 under the governor, Sir Philip Carteret. James-2 Bollen was b. 1663-1667 (after 1663 because he was under 21 on 10 May 1683 when he chose Samuel Moore and Nathaniel Fitz Randolph of Woodbridge to be his guardians, and before 1667 as he probably was of age 1688/9 when he married). He m. (1st) Feb 24 1688/9 Elizabeth Godfrey of New York (ancestry unknown) (New York Marriages Previous to 1784, p. 585). James and Elizabeth Bollen were members of the Baptist Church in Middletown, NJ in 1712. (Stillwell, John E., Historical and Genealogical Miscellany, Data Relating to the Settlement and Settlers of New York and New Jersey, Vol. II, p. 41). By 25 Jul 1714 Elizabeth (Godfrey) Bollen was dead since on that date James Bollen was married to Martha (Hutchinson) Dennis, daughter of George Hutchinson of Burlington Co. & Philadelphia, and widow of John Dennis of Gloucester Co. ("1714 July 25. James Bollen and wife Martha, formerly Dennis, took the inventory of the estate of Rachel Hutchinson of Burlington Co., N.J." (NJ Arch., 23:251.) Rachel Hutchinson was sister of Martha. John Dennis and Martha Hutchinson had issue. George Hutchinson's will made 8 Apr 1698 in Philadelphia, mentions daughter Martha and her daughter Mary. The will of John Dennis of Newton Township, Gloucester Co., made 28 Dec 1712, mentions daughter Rebecca and brother William. He also had a brother Samuel Dennis. Martha Bollen, wife of James was buried Philadelphia 14 Jun 1724. (Hinshaw, Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. II, p. 441-2.) NOTE: She was not a Quaker, but the notice of her death is in this book. James Bollen m. (3rd) in Philadelphia 1725 Ann Huges/Hughes. (GMNJ Jan 1981, p. 30). No more info on Ann Huges/Hughs/Hughes. It is not known when or where James Bollen died, but it was after 2 July 1725 when "James Bollen of Philadelphia sold land to Gershom Mott of Middletown, Monmouth Co., West Jersey." I rather suspect he died in Philadelphia, but that's just a guess. So now that you've waded through all this ---- does anybody know who were the children of James-2 Bollen and his first wife, Elizabeth Godfrey? A "Miss Boleyn/Bollen" m. c1725 James-1 Harris, b. Bristol, Somersetshire, England c1700; d. Elizabethtown, NJ 6 Apr 1763; bur in the old St. John's Churchyard of Elizabethtown. Lyon Memorial, Vol. II -- Families of Henry and Richard Lyon, states that she was probably a daughter of James-2 Bollen, son of Capt. James-1 Bollen. If "Miss Boleyn/Bollen" is a daughter of James-2 Bollen, then she must have been by his first wife, Elizabeth Godfrey. There's always the possibility that James-2 Bollen adopted the children of his second wife, Martha (Hutchinson) Dennis. And that could mean one of her Dennis daughters was "Miss Boleyn/Bollen." Plod, plod, plod. Sincerely, Patty Myers [email protected]
