Hi All, The 1793 Middletown Tax List is being published for the first time in The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, May 2002 issue. The first installment includes background about the tax, statistics for Middletown, the names of the taxpayers, the details upon which the amount of their tax was based (acres, cows, slaves, etc.), and the total amount of their tax. Organized alphabetically by first name by the assessor, this issue includes first names beginning with the letter "A" through the men named "John." It is an exact transcription of the names and an abstract of the tax ratables data. This tax list is not included on the New Jersey Archives microfilm, "County Tax Ratables" and is not among the microfilm holdings available at the local Family History Center. This tax list is immensely valuable to genealogists because it includes many instances in which the assessor included a family relationship (e.g., "son of Obadiah"), occupation, or place of residence. Basic subscriptions to the Genealogical Society of New Jersey, which include three issues of the GMNJ plus two newsletters, is $20. Membership inquiries should be directed to: Genealogical Society of New Jersey, P. O. Box 1291, New Brunswick, NJ 08903. Happy Independence Day! Judi in Virginia
