    3. The Herberts of Wickatunk, New Jersey, are "descended from Sir Philip Herbert, 4th Earl of Pembroke. Francis Herbert, the first representative of that name in New Jersey was a grandson of Sir Philip Herbert and with thirty associates, came from Long Island in 1677 and settled in Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey. He married, according to Honorable John W Herbert of New York in 1904, Hannah Bowne, daughter of the celebrated Quaker, John Bowne, who located on Long Island in 1659." Miss Edith W Mather however says that her mother, the late Mrs Dewitt Clinton Mather, claimed that Francis Herbert married Hannah Applegate. "Francis and Hannah Herbert had four sons and three daughters." Hon John W Herbert says they were: Thomas Herbert; Francis Herbert; David Herbert; Obadiah Herbert; Elizabeth Herbert; Deborah Herbert and Mary Herbert." Mrs Mather declared that they were: Thomas Herbert; Francis Herbert; Samuel Herbert; Obediah Herbert; Elizabeth Herbert; Bridget Herbert and Mary Herbert. Obadiah/Obediah Herbert in 1720 married Hannah Lawrence, daughter of William Lawrence Jr of Middletown, who was a grandson of Henry Lawrence, President of Cromwell's Council and son of William Lawrence, Sen. William Lawrence Jr married Ruth Gibbons. Obadiah Herbert, one of the nine children of Obadiah/Obediah Herbert and Hannah Lawrence, married in 1765, Elizabeth Warne, granddaughter of Thomas Warne, one of the twenty four Proprietors of East Jersey, and settled in Middlesex County. The children of Obediah Herbert and Hannah Lawrence Herbert, as given by Mrs D W C Mather, copied from Bible, printed in London, 1678, in possession of Mary Whitlock Spader of Matawan, New Jersey, were: Obediah Herbert; John Herbert; William Herbert; Francis Herbert; Richard Herbert; Felix Herbert; Esek Herbert; Hannah Herbert; Ruth Herbert. The record itself is as follows: My son Obediah Herbert was born Sept 9th day about 12 of the clock at night 1731 My son John Herbert was born 17th of Jan on Wed about one o'clock in the afternoon 1732-3 (1733) My son William Herbert was born Sept 27th on Thursday about ten o'clock at night 1734 My son Francis Herbert was born the 21st of May on Friday about three o'clock in the afternoon and died in the year 1736 My son Richard Herbert was born Friday Nov 2nd day at ten o'clock in the evening 1738 Be it remembered that Eleanor Howard, daughter of Thomas and Margaret Howard, was born on Sunday August 3rd 1755 about six o'clock in the afternoon My son Felix Herbert was born the 18th of Oct about six o'clock in the evening 1740 My son Esek Herbert was born the 18th of Oct about 9 o'clock in the evening 1740 My daughter Hannah Herbert was born Tuesday the 12th of Oct about twelve of the clock at night 1742 My daughter Ruth Herbert was born Tuesday the 13th of March about eleven o'clock at night 1746 What follows is taken from "American Ancestry" by Joel Munsell's Sons, Albany, New York, 1891, Vol VI, p 73 Herbert Jacob of Freehold, New Jersey, at Herbertsville, New Jersey, 1812, prominent in state affairs, member of the Legislature two years, was offered the position of Secretary of State of New Jersey under Gov Charles Olden but declined, paymaster in the army during the Civil War (married mary 24, 1835, Eliza Smock, desc of Hendrick Smotk, a magistrate of Long Island, 1646, and great granddaughter of Mary Schenk and Hendrick Smock, distinguished family of the Revolution, three of its members served as Captains in the militia); son of Obadiah Herbert of Herbertsville, New Jersey, born at Point Pleasant, New Jersey, June 13, 1775, died at Herbertsville, New Jersey, 1856, a man of wealth and prominence, owning during his lifetime some 18,000 acres of land, surveyor, and assisted Robert Stevens, John Stevens and Edwin Stevens in the survey of the Camden and Amboy Road, was present at the trial of the first steam engine of the C and A road (married Margaret Sophia Van Wickle, daughter of Judge Jacob VanWickle and Sarah Morgan Vanwickle, and granddaughter of Captain James Morgan of the Revolutionary ARmy and Margaret Evertson of New Jersey); son of Obadiah Herbert of Mt Pleasant, New Jersey, born at Perth Amboy, New Jersey, September 9, 1731; died at Mt Pleasant, October 12, 1777; surveyor; owner of a large tract of land, married 1765 Elizabeth Warne, daughter of Joshua Warne, son of Thomas Warne, born in England, one of the twenty four proprietors of East Jersey and son of Katherine, a sister of Dr Thomas Triplett, a dean of Westminster Abbey; son of Obediah Herbert of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, born at Middletown, New Jersey, died at Perth Amboy, June 19, 1759; surveyor; his surveys are preserved in the Proprietors' office at Perth Amboy and are considered of great value as records of the old land surveys, married 1730 Hannah Lawrence, daughter of William Lawrence and Ruth Gibbons Lawrence, he , William Lawrence, was the son of William Lawrence of Middletown who bought David Mudie's share of the twenty four proprietary shares. Captain James Lawrence, the naval hero, and Commodore Boggs, are descendants of this family. son of Francis Herbert of Middletown and Holmdel, New Jersey, died at Holmdel, 1719, came to Elizabethtown, New Jersey, 1665, and on February 19, same year, took the oath of allegiance to the king and settled on about 1,000 acres of land, married Hannah Bowne, daughter of either Samuel Bowne or Obadiah Bowne and Lydia Holmes Bowne, and the granddaughter of Obediah Holmes of Massachusetts.
