Extracted from "Archives of the State of New Jersey, First Series, Documents Relating to the Colonial History of the State of New Jersey, Volume XXII, Marriage Records, 1665-1800; Edited, with an Historical Introduction on the Early Marriage Laws of New Jersey, and the Precedents on which they were Founded; by William Nelson; Paterson, N.J. 1900. Beginning page 467: HACKENSACK REFORMED (DUTCH) CHURCH RECORDS. The earliest marriage and baptismal registers of the Hackensack Reformed (Dutch) Church are entered in a stout folio volume, which, though more than two hundered years old, is in an excellent state of preservation. For the first century of the Church's history the records were kept in Dutch. A careful translation was pub- lished in 1891 by the Holland Society of New York, the printed volume being an ex- act reproduction (but in English) of the original record, giving church members, 1686-1801; marriages, 1695-1752, 1790-1796, 1799-1802; baptisms, 1686-1802; elec- tion of church officers, etc. With the permission of the Holland Society, the follow- ing alphabetical arrangement is given of that translation, so far as it relates to the marriage records. In 1724 a new church was organized at Schraalenburgh (pronounced Skrrawlen- burgh), about four miles from Hackensack. Both churches were under the same pas- torate during the rest of the century. Hence, marriages or baptisms in one church are often entered in the records of the other. The hiatus in the marriage register of the Hackensack church, 1753-1789, is largely supplied in the register of the Schraal- enburgh Church. It was the custom in the Reformed Dutch Churches to publish the banns, or to announce intended marriages, from the pulpit, three Sundays before the marriage, or to have notice thereof set up at the church door. Sometimes the banns would be proclaimed at one church, and the marriage would be performed at another. This might occur because of the removal of the parties. Usually, no doubt, it was due to the fact that there was no service in the church where the banns had been proclaimed, and the bride and groom repaired to the nearest clergyman to get married. In the following index, the date given is that of the entry in the record, generally after the first "calling out" of the parties. Some Dominies kept a careful record of the date of the banns and of the marriage also, but that was not customary. The statement that one or both the parties to a marriage "lived here," or "lived in Hackensack," or in Second River, Paramus, Acquackanonk, etc., often means that the person belonged to the Dutch Church of the locality mentioned, and that he or she was actually a resident of such place. The Reformed Dutch Churches in North- ern New Jersey in the eighteenth century were: Bergen (now Jersey City), English Neighborhood, Hackensack, Schraalenburgh, Acquackanonk (now Passaic), Paramus, Second River (now Belleville), t' Noorde (at the North), or de Panne (now Oakland), Horseneck (now Fairfield), Pompton Plains, Montville. In these marriage records the names of places are variously written by different scribes, some being in Dutch, and some being the results of attempts to reproduce 468 New Jersey Colonial Documents phonetically in Dutch the English names. Many of the names may be unfamiliar to readers of the present day. Hence the following explanations may be useful: Acqueggenonock, Akkwegnonk, Acquegnon, etc. -- Acquackanonk. Now Acquack- anonk township, the city of Passaick, and the greater part of the city of Pat- erson. Asemes -- Harsimus. Now in Jersey City. Barbaer's Neck, Barbary Neck, etc.--New Barbadoes Neck. Southwestern part of Hudson County, between the Passaic and Hackensack rivers. Barlenton--Burlington Basten--Boston Boswyck--Bushwick, L. I. Iapog--Now written Yawpaw. In Bergen County, between Paterson and Pompton. Isophus--Esopus, N. Y. Kalbrist, France--Probably meant for Quelle Brest. Kortlandt--Cortlandt Manor, N. Y. Kwaksak--Quacksack. A creek in Bergen County. Manadis Isl.--Manhattan Island. Mawe--Mahwah, in the Ramapo Valley. Monachie--Moonachie, near Rutherford, Bergen County. N. Amersfort--Flatlands, L. I. Pemmuerpogh, Pommerpogh, Pemmery, etc.--Pamrapo, in Jersey City. Peremis--Paramus, Bergen County. Philipsburgh--Tarrytown. Pommerpogh--Pamrapo. Rawak, Rawe--Probably Rahway. Reemepogh, Remmepog, Rympoogh--Ramapo. Hackensack Church Marriage Records. 469 Ringwoet--Ringwood, formerly in Bergen County; now in the northern part of Passaic County. Rympogh--Ramapo. Sachen--Sachsen, Saxony, Germany. Schoonegte, etc.--Schenectady, N. Y. Second River--Belleville. Segquanek. Siapenicke. St. Tonne--Doubtless meant for St. Anne. Suythool--Southold, L. I. Thyne Valley (Dutch, Tuyne Vly)--Garden Meadow. Pompton Plains. Viscoe. Vlaender, Vlaanderen--Flanders, in Holland. Waggereuw, Wegreuw, etc.--Wagaraw, now part of the Borough of Hawthorne, near Paterson. Wihaecke, Wyhaken--Weehawken. Wyremes--Wearimus, in Bergen County, between Paterson and Ridgewood. Zykakis, Zykkens, etc.--Secaucus, in Hudson County. The names of persons undergo all sorts of transormations, according to the vari- ous systems of orthography followed by the different Dominies and Voorlesers who kept the records from time to time. The attempts of some of the Dutch writers to repro- duce in their language foreign names lead to strange results in some instances: as Tsjeems Jsjansen, for James Johnson; Ritsjert, for Richard; Narrits, for Norwich; and others more readily intelligble. For explanations of the Dutch system of patro- nymics, and translations of Christian names, the reader is referred to the Collections of the Holland Society, Vol. I (containing the Registers above referred to), pp. xix-xxiii; also to the Doremus Genealogy (Paterson, N. J., 1897,) p. 202-204, where additional translations and the pronunication of Christian names are given. ------- Note.--The names of males and females are arranged under one alphabet. After the names of the males a translation is given of the entire entry in the Church rec- ord. In the case of the females only the names of the parties and the dates are given in this index, as the full particulars may be found under the names of the males. The dates given are of the proclamation of the banns, unless otherwise stated. Does anyone have the Parker marriage returns by wives that they would be willing to email to me. I have lost/ miss-placed my copy and cannot find it anywhere, and I need a copy asap. We are in the process of trying to organize and match up who married who in the Parker line. What a job, and I really need those female return records. Thank you Pauline Parker pparker@bellsouth.net
Can anyone help? Trying to find parents of James I Baird, b abt 1792. James married Ann Buck on 20 Jan 1820. I suspect this was at the Old Brick Church by Rev Woodhull, but don't have access to the marriage registers... James died on 1 Mar 1848, and Ann died on 10 Jan 1851. I have two children for them: John and Elizabeth. Any help would be appreciated. Jason
Hi List, To all those who expressed an interest in this particular case of the old misspelled name problem I'm posting the below emails. First is my request and then the reply. [I posted my request by getting on the NJSA website and selecting archives reference. At the reference web page a send-an-email button was available which I used to send the request.] Maybe this will help someone who would like to avail themselves of the same service. todays asbury park press _www.app.com_ (http://www.app.com) in case you are from that branch of claytons.
I own copies of microfilm of the Asbury Park Evening Press covering the period 1 January 1909 to 31 August 1909. If anyone wishes a lookup of an obituary for someone and they know the exact date, I will check it for you. I can't do it if you do not have a date as I do not have an index. An interesting article appeared in the issue of 10 March on the front page regarding Ernest W. EMMONS. It begins as follows: "HUSBAND MISSING FOR SEVEN YEARS Is Legally Dead and Mrs. Em- mons Asks Court to Settle Up His Estate Mrs. Sallie W. Emmons of Long Branch, whose husband Ernest W. Emmons has been missing for seven years, has applied to the surrogate's court to settle up his estate. In the eyes of the law, Mr. Emmons is dead, no news of him having been had in New Jersey, even tho he may be living in the far west..." If this is someone you've been looking for, let me know and I will send you the rest of the article. Peggy Rossi
Hi List, Here's a real challange to all the serious researchers. Help me resolve the question: was Sam a JOHNSON or a JOHNSTON. In 1840 Howell Twp, Samuel Johnson is listed with 1 male 0-5, 1 female 20-30. In 1850 Howell Twp, Samuel Johnson 39 is listed with family: Sarah 31, Hiram, Albert, Lydia, & Eugene. In 1860 Brooklyn City, Samuel Johnson 48 is listed with family: Sarah 41, Horace, Albert, Lydia, Eugene, & Billie. Question: could all these record takers be wrong in spelling his family name? In a book, of which I have only a few pages, 'Marriages of Monmouth County, New Jersey,' page 59, Samuel is listed as 'Samuel Johnston - Sarah Jane Hays .. 11-27-1833.' A response from a previous request says, 'From the FTM CD#240 - Marriage Index: New Jersey 1680-1900: Monmouth County, Samuel JOHNSON -- Sarah Jane HAYS, 27 Nov 1833.' Question: did the book and the CD get the info from different sources? or is this just a case of typographic error? And, is there a source? Is there an official marriage record somewhere that can be accessed? I don't find Sam in 1870 in Brooklyn, but Horace is listed as a JOHNSON, still in Brooklyn, m. Louisa. 1880, Albert moved to Ocean Co, m. Mary Elizabeth Clayton, and is listed as a JOHNSTON. Ted in NC
this is in part 20- http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?BRD=1091&dept_id=425690&newsid=13683682&PAG =461&rfi=9 tannery thus conveyed was that which was established by Moses Robins about 1[7]31, and which was last operated by the late George Middleton [a subterfuge for Underground Railroad activity]. The description above given includes the dwelling house and lot on the southerly side of Main Street now owned by Emily S. Moyer. After the death of Moses Robins in 1775, the tanyard appears to have passed into the possession of Isaac Rogers, the son of Samuel from whom he had purchased it.
Hello, I am a new subscriber trying to get a breakthrough with my brick wall ancestor ELIZABETH ROBINS, born May 12, 1753 Monmouth Co, NJ, and died Feb. 12, 1786. She married JOHN GROVER (14 FEB 1745/46 - 17 AUG 1829), who was the son of JAMES GROVER/MARY TILTON > JOSEPH GROVER/HANNAH LAWRENCE > JAMES GROVER/REBECCA. I was recently advised that she may descend from the DANIEL ROBINS/ROBINSON & HOPE POTTER family. I have been trying to piece their descendants together the last few days from internet sources, but am running into all kinds of date conflicts and variants. There are a number of Elizabeth Robinses downstream from Daniel & Hope, but haven't found any with the same birth and death dates as the one who married John GROVER. Anyone who wants to compare info with mine, my website is at: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=updike I will be very grateful for any ideas or info that anyone wishes to share. Does anyone know of a ROBINS family bible with genealogical info that goes back that far? Best wishes for the rest of 2005! Dale Updike North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada

Hi List, I've been tracking Samuel Johnson who shows up in the census records for Howell Twp in 1840 with 1 0-5 child and 1 20-30 female; in 1850 with himself 39, Sarah 31, Hiram 13, Albert 8, Lydia 5 and Eugene 3. In 1860 the family moved to Brooklyn. I'd like know if Samuel is listed in the 1830 census in Howell Twp or other NJ location. Would someone please check the 1830 census for NJ? Really appreciate any help. Ted in NC
I don't know if this is pertinent to the Shrewsbury marriages, but, for a non-minister or non-justice of the peace (such as a relative or family friend) to perform a wedding in Massachusetts, the applicants must apply to the governor of the state for a special license. Larry Lanzaro

In reference to Senate Bill 2845, the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004, President Bush signed it into law on December 17. Whether this law makes it more difficult for us to obtain birth records, as mentioned in the December 8 issue of RootsWeb Review, remains to be seen. I would be interested in hearing the opinions of other, more informed, listers on this subject. Larry Lanzaro
