This question has been asked on the Tremaine message board but without satisfaction. Several sources attribute Abigail's parents as Benjamin Stout and Phoebe (Fammitje and Fermittje various type spellings) De Forest (De Froseest etc) of Dutch origin. That Benjamin of NYC goes back via Jonathan Jr and Jonathan Sr. to the Richard Stout Jr.of Monmouth and his father Richard Sr., well known Patentee. Another source attributes Abigail father as another Richard Stout - location unknown. I understnad New York State has been slower than many in getting Vital Records into computerized form. I am frustrated in attempting to prove that Abigail hearkens from the Monmouth Stouts. My family descends from the Hartshornes who went on to marry Abigail and John's descendants for the next 3 generations in Nova Scotia. Given that Hartshornes were already connected via marriage with Lawrences, Stouts, Bownes and Usticks my solid connection with Monmouth is already assured - however Famitje's lin! eage as well as Amerintje Christianse married to John Stout Sr. (drowned tragically young at sea on the way from Jamaica to NYC) have varied roots from Holland as putatively, so did the well known matriarch Penelop Prinz (wife to Patentee Richard). In Fammitje's case, lineage traces back to Huguenot France and the Netherlands in 1470 - an attractive possibility. Few records exist on the searches for Abigail Stout and what appears is contradictory with essentially 2 choices settling on a 1739 Abigail seemingly born in New England at Vermont or Massachusetts this one apparently went on to marry a John Agnew in 1758 (also NYC)and Caleb Hyatt in 1762 but was Jonathan Tremaine a 3rd husband as some quote? The other Abigail was born in 1754 and appears to be the right date given the length of future childbearing years. Bill Stout (from Stouts of America page) kindly informed me that he received his information via Joseph Stillwell's extensive work - Vol IV on the Stouts etc, that the daughter of Benjamin was born in an unknown year after his marriage in 1738 and only had the first 2 husbands? If anyone has access to the Stout family tree at the Museum in Hopewell, I wonder if there is any more light shed there? Thx for any directions on this quandary. Robin Lawson

I recently completed requests on these surnames. If anyone would want copies kindly email me. They are too large to post to the NJ-L site, and I'd rather not break them up. Generally they cover will abstracts from 1670-1806, marriages to 1800, and deeds to 1703. David _dtourison@vcn.com_ (mailto:dtourison@vcn.com)

A good resource to help you understand the Proprietary period -- "Using the Records of the East and West Jersey Proprietors" -- is online (.pdf file) at: http://www.njarchives.org/links/webcat/queries/pproprie.html From 1686 through 1790, Perth Amboy was the capitol of the Province of East Jersey. Please note that the counties in New Jersey did not fully gain the ability to record land transactions until statehood in 1785. Hello Pirate Hunters, David Podmajersky's message regarding the location of Shoal Harbor (Belford-Middletown Twp.) and the possibility of pirates use of the area has brought back memories of my childhood. During the 1930's and 40's, my family spent their summers at a place called Quast's Grove which was in the Highlands, right on the Shrewsbury River. The grove was a group of bungalows that was located toward the old Highlands Marina. As a youngster,I had always heard stories about pirates, especially Captain Kidd, using the area just inside of Sandy Hook as a hideout to escape the British Coast Guards who were always after them. They were supposed to have used Horseshoe Cove and Spermaceti Cove as hiding places. Also, naturally, they supposedly buried their loot in these areas and on the beaches of the Shrewsbury near Quast's Grove. My cousins and I were always treasure hunting, especially over on the Hook. Of course, since Fort Hancock was a US Army post, we were frequently run-off by MP's. They even caught us a couple of times and took us up to their HQ and really scared the heck out of us by putting us in the brig for a little while. We never found any treasure. One year, probably 1946,in the early Spring, someone reported finding some old coins on the Quast area beach. It was written up in the Newark paper. "Experts" identified the coins as being Spanish and said that they were probably "Captain Kidd's Buried Treasure" This really caused a big treasure hunt all along the beaches. Of course, nobody ever found anything. It was later written off as a hoax. Old residents of the Highlands always told stories about the treasure but none was ever found,to my knowledge. I am sure that the local historical societies and other groups have lots of information about Captain Kidd and his escapades up and down the Jersey Shore. I should think it is Belford rather than Port Monmouth in terms of where the harbor actually sits. Port Monmouth is adjacent to Belford but the harbor is in Belford. Any curent border between the two is not known to me and may be more of a Post Office creation than a formal delineation, the two places being a part of the current Middletown. It is a storied place where pirates once roamed including Captain Kidd. Several of his mates settled nearby including William Leeds who was a key member of Christ Church Shrewsbury. Another mate, whose name escapes me, was said to have settled in the Highlands. As much of Captain Kidd's treasure has never been found, there is some speculation that it could be buried in Belford. I suspect it is in my friends yard, not far from Shoal Harbor, but I'll leave it at that and not explain my suspicions as he will not allow me to dig it up. The current inhabitants of the harbor are often referred to as "the Belford Pirates" although their activity is generally understood to be limited to fishing and any "piracy" currently engaged in is said to be poaching. Federal agents frequent the neighborhood and some inhabitants are said to have done hard time. I'll make no accusations but some have told me of fishing boats returning to the cove only to be swarmed over by agents as they approached and those aboard ship busied themselves with dumping some sort of catch overboard! The Pirates Cove is a place there where you can get decent retail fish. It is located right on the harbor at 901 Port Monmouth Rd., Belford. --- Karen Tibbals <ktibbals@optonline.net> wrote: > According to the website > > http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nj/monmouth/history/local/townchng01.tx > t > > Shoal Harbor is now Port Monmouht (Middletown) > > Karen > > -----Original Message----- > From: Pauline Harper [mailto:perils@usadatanet.net] > Sent: Saturday, April 02, 2005 3:01 PM > To: NJMONMOU-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: shoal harbor > > > I am researching a Thomas Cooper in Monmouth County and find a reference > to land received by Thomas from his father Benjamin, from a deed > dated1744. Shoal Harbor is now called Compton's Creek. It is in The Belford Section of Middletown Township. It is still called Shoal Harbor by some to this day. Perth Amboy is in Middlesex County.
