This set is available as a facimile reprint from Higginson Books. Do not confuse these books with the Genealogy of the Stillwell family, also by John Stillwell and are a set of books...4 or 5 I believe. Pat
Did everyone see Yesterday's edition of "DEAR ABBY" There was an excellent discussion about the life expectancy of a photo print. Color prints only have a life expectancy of less than that of a human generation. Article suggests that for Albums that will stand the test of time, to had some of the pictures taken with black & white film and printed on the correct paper for black & white film, not on color photo paper as the inages will still fade with time. Hi Debbie, I apologize for not responding to your question sooner. The wills I am referring to are abstracts from the New Jersey Archives collections on CD. The time period is from about 1670 to 1760, and they cover all counties in NJ. I am willing to do look-ups, but need as much specific information as possible, such as approximate date of death, name of spouse and/or children, and county. At a bare minimum I need a first and last name as searching the indexes for the three volumes can be time consuming. Regarding the Stillwell books; John E. Stillwell was a doctor who lived in New York City during the late 1800 to early 1900's. As he researched his own ancestry he collected a lot of information about allied families. Between 1903 and 1932 he published a 5 volume set of books titled "Historical and Genealogical Miscellany - Data Relating to the Settlement and Settlers of New York and New Jersey". Vol. 5 was published posthumously. These books are an invaluable resource to anyone researching Monmouth County families. They contain town records which have long since disappeared, and gravestone inscriptions which are now worn away. In addition, his book includes oral histories and bible records which would be lost to us today. I am willing to do look-ups from the Stillwell books, but again I need as much information as possible. The books are available from the New England Genealogical and Historical Society's circulating library if you are a member there. They may also be available through interlibrary loan from the New York Public Library. Most of Stillwell's notes and correspondence are housed at the New York Historical Society, but the Monmouth County Historical Society in Freehold also has some of his papers. The books are available for sale, but I forget from which publisher. If you do a search on "John E.Stillwell" you should be able to find the publisher. If you are researching several pre-Revolutionary War Monmouth Co. families it is well worth having the books on hand. Volume 1 contains town records and Dutch Church records for Staten Island, and Quaker church records for Shrewsbury. Volume 2 contains town records, church records, and cemetery records for Burlington, Middletown, and Freehold, NJ. Volumes 3, 4, and 5 contain genealogies of many of the first settlers of Middletown -----Original Message----- From: Debbie Price <price1234@tnns.net> To: NJMONMOU-L@rootsweb.com <NJMONMOU-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, April 02, 2000 9:39 AM Subject: Re: [NJMONMOU] NJ Wills >Hello Susan, >could you please explain what time period and what places are included in >the wills. Hi Susan, I am interested in obtaining a copy of a N.J. will dated 4 March 1773 for a John Willson who died in April 1775. Do you have any suggestions as to where I might find it? Also I am interested in the genealogy for John Willson an early settler of Piscataway, Middleton, NJ. He was in N.J as early as 1728, perhaps earlier and anything there might be on the Thickson family. A Rebecca Thickson married a John Willson. Many, many thanks for providing all this info to those of us having all the fun! Trish2Ann@aol.com Trish/Oregon

Mary Catharine Bowne (b. ~1696 in NJ d. August 10, 1737 at Topanemus, NJ) married Robert Carhart (b. 1693 in Staten Island d. February 12, 1752 in Matawan, Monmouth, NJ) in 1725. Her stone is the most perfectly preserved one at the Topanemus Burying Grounds. Children were Mary, Anne, Cornelius, Lydia, and Samuel. No parentage info for Mary, but her husband Robert Carhart was the son of Thomas Carhart (the first known Carhart in the new world) and Mary Lord. Audrey, If you have not already done so, you should check vol. 3 of John E. Stillwell's "Historical and Genealogical Miscellany of the Early Settlers of New Jersey". On pages 29-108 there is an extensive genealogy of the Bowne family from the mid 1600's to the mid 1800's. -----Original Message----- From: gbowne <gbowne@email.msn.com> To: NJMONMOU-L@rootsweb.com <NJMONMOU-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, April 01, 2000 10:40 PM Subject: [NJMONMOU] BOWNE Surname and Allied Families >Dear List members, > >I am researching the surname BOWNE. I am looking for information on the GRANDIN(GRANDON) family. I have Bernard GRANDON married Sarah POINTSWAY(POINCETT) 29 Dec 1740. They had at least one son Edward born 15June 1744. The baptimal records are for Burlington, but didn't Monmouth used to be Burlington? I know there were other GRANDINs here at that time. I am trying to connect them. Didn't they own a textile business? John was a fuller and Bernard was a weaver. I thought Bernard coukld be a middle name. Thank you, Pam

Cemetery cleanup: Trustees need help maintaining historic cemetery Published in the Asbury Park Press 4/01/00 By KAREN HAMMERDORFER DELANCEYCORRESPONDENT In a race against time, trustees of the Mount Prospect Cemetery, Neptune, are looking for volunteers to clear away some of the undergrowth that has taken over a portion of the site. "Mother Nature is trying to take it over, but we're trying to take it back," said trustee Dawn Crawford, Neptune. The historic cemetery, located at the west end of Heck Avenue, dates back to 1881. It serves as the final resting place for more than 500 veterans, including two Revolutionary War Volunteer Patriots and 103 Civil War veterans. Ten trustees have been maintaining the cemetery for approximately eight years. Only half of them -- including David C. Jacobs, 64, Neptune City, who has five generations of family members buried at the site -- are able to perform the manual labor. Part of the cemetery is overrun by small but bothersome trees. Some of the headstones are barely visible beneath vines and ivy. By June, the trustees' major battle will be keeping up with cutting the grass on the 33-acre property. In contrast, the cemetery also includes a marble monolith, built by local millionaire Henry M. Bennett, of Neptune City, for his wife who died in 1892. The landmark, which features a view of the ocean, was used by ships as a navigational landmark. "I come here out of respect," said Crawford, whose husband Gary is president of the nonprofit group. There are about 50 families who have relatives buried in the cemetery and help with the upkeep. "But if the people buried here no longer have relatives to take care of their graves, their resting place should still look nice.' Crawford said that some organizations have objected to the fact that flags are kept at veterans' graves throughout the year, rather than for just a few weeks in May to commemorate Memorial Day. "We respect these veterans all year round. When the flags get frayed, we come right out and install a new one," she said. Crawford has undertaken the tedious task of establishing a database of those buried at the cemetery. It involves searching through old burial permits, most of which are hand-written, difficult to read and decayed. Two weeks ago she recovered the names of five veterans who served in the Colored Infantry during the Civil War; there are also two victims of the sinking of the Morro Castle some 66 years ago. To date, there are approximately 12,000 burials listed in the database. "We're bringing back the history," she said. Future projects include a meditation park and the installation of flag holders by Eagle Scouts. Crawford's own history with the cemetery dates back 25 years, when, as an art student, she made rubbings of some of the tombstones. "The maintenance man used to kick me out," she said. "I've always been intrigued by this place. It's a place to think. It's quiet. There's no hassles. Think of all the stuff that went on here. History is being regained here, and others that come to visit will walk away with a bit of history too." Crawford said that while vandalism played a role in the disturbance of some of the headstones in the past, it is not as prevalent today. "The ground is made of sand and rock. If a tombstone is on a hill, it will slide and fall over," she said. Twenty people from Earle Naval Weapons Station, Colts Neck, helped clear away some of the undergrowth and reset headstones yesterday. Some the headstones were so heavy that it took four men to slide them back in place. Seaman Latoya Colter cleaned off some of the dirt from the headstones. "I feel proud of what I'm doing. I know a family member might come out and feel good that we picked up their relative's headstone," she said. Anyone interested in helping maintain the cemetery can write to the Board of Trustees of Mount Prospect Cemetery, 404 Slocum Ave., Neptune, NJ 07753-3829; or visit the Web site http://homestead.juno.com/crawsat/mtproscem.html.
