    2. Debbie Price
    3. Hello to all, I was pleasantly suprised when my aunt sent me a copy of "History of the Township of Millstone" by Jean E. Mount the other day. It makes for very interesting reading. Lots fo tidbits, and maps and some charts. Also has a list of the heads of household in Millstone Twp in 1850 , a list of Justice of the peace, postmasters, freeholders and others. The dates run mainly in the 1800's , some info is a little earlier some a little later. I would be happy to do lookups for anyone who is interested. Please supply a name and date andI will do my best. Debbie Price price1234@tnns.net

    3. I want to thank all the good folks who replied to my very tentative query on the Stillwell-Taylor connection. You are a very helpful group and I don't know why I didn't get on this list sooner. It would have saved me a lot of time and eye strain. As you all have pointed out there is a lot of Taylor history in Monmouth Co. Here is what I am trying to do. My gggg/gf was Daniel Taylor, b. 1758 in Hunterdon Twp. He served in the Rev War. He moved to Hampshire Co. VA about 1784 and died there in 1844. I cannot find his father, but I am assuming that he must be among the early Taylors in Monmouth. I am piecing together everything that I can find to connect these various Taylors and hopefully find my missing ancestor. If anyone has any other suggestions, I will appreciate any possible lead. Thanks, Phil

    2. Susan Amicucci
    3. Pat, thank you for the informative message about marriage customs for widows. There is another marriage custom called "throwing the stocking" which I have always been curious about. Jonathan Holmes described the custom in his diary as follows: 25 Apr 1737 "in the after part of the day I went unto John Bards: Peter Bowne being with me it being wedding times there. at evening as the young folks was a shoeing tricks in the outward room the Groom and Brid Luckeyly Sliped into Bed and fastened the doore: Some notice was given of the matter before the groom was gott to bed. Some indeavored to peep but the females hindered us with a seeming desire to have all to themselves & that while the groom was ondressing some said that they would open the doore and fe (see) that the brid was rightly put to bed and would throwe the Stocken. after some time the wind rose or something that drew the window sheet open & a person jumpd in and opened the Doore then all hands in a seeking for the brides stocking which after awhile I found in my hand and another I found under the bed then to throwing the stocking after some I threw & hit the brids nose which made lafter (laughter) and after we had done I saluted the brid and so shut the door & window" (John E. Stillwell, "Historical & Genealogical Miscellany", 3:368, Jonathan Holmes' Diary). Any ideas on what throwing the bride's stocking symbolized? Susan

I'd really like to have any available help with my Smith brick wall. Is this your family? They were in Freneau which at that time was Middletown. The only date that comes to mind was that I think Peter and Elsje Johnston were married in 1772. If you are on the same family line and need it I will look for the info and sources. Let me know.
