    1. [NJMONMOU] Ann May School of Nursing
    2. Copied from the program for the Class Day Exercises of the Ann May Memorial Hospital Spring Lake Thursday, May Fourteenth Nineteen Fourteen CLASS POEM We love it, we love it! And who shall say One cruel word about our "Ann May" For two long yeard in its stately halls We've had spells of the laughs, and spells of the bawls, Hours of work, and moments of play, But still we adore it "Old Ann May." During class-room hours we hovered near The lecturing Dr.'s with open ear; To grasp the methods, they did give, How to help people die, and help them to live, How to be patient, faithful, and kind, Regardless our feeling or frame of mind. Often at night, when our work was o'er We would sofly steal by Miss Leggat's door, With quivering breath, and steps so slow, Till we safely arrived at the diet below. Then the old coffee pot, and the toaster too! In double quick time appeared in view "All Hail," to our superintendent so grand How we all envy that minister man; She knew oft, we returned from the Banquet Hall, Leaving the fish, fried mush and all. And we learnt how much the heart could bear, When we were squelched so often by the hoursekeeper there. 'Tis past, 'tis past! But we'll try every day To be loyal nurses to "Our Ann May:" 'Tis bound by a thousand bands to our heart, Not a tie will we break, or a link will we part. Would you know the reason -- of this great day? 'Tis the 1914 Graduation in "Dear Ann May." ESTHER M. POPP

It does have a very active alumni association. They have donated lots of money to Jersey Shore Medical Center, now part of the Meridian Health CAre system. I am sure if you called the hospital at 732-775-5500 or the Foundation phone number at 732-776-4382 they could give you a phone number or address for the alumni group. If they can't help I have several friends who are graduates and I can get info from them. Terry katmandu@compuserve.com >> - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ------------------------------------------ Terry, Thank you for your reply! Sorry to hear that this School of Nursing was closed as I am when any school of nursing is closed (having been a nurse, myself) though the decisions to do so are usually made with the best interests in mind. My mother belonged to the alumini until at least 1980 -- she died in 1982. She looked with much anticipation for the newsletter she received through the years. Her memories of her Ann May were many, some of which she revealed to me; however, I wish she were here to tell me more. She left me a copy of her Class Day Exercises, dated (Thursday, May Fourteenth, Nineteen Fourteen). She wrote the Class Poem which I will post separately. I would appreciate your asking your friends if they would obtain information about the early days from the Alumnae Archives -- I would contact the hospital or foundation numbers you supplied but I was hoping to avoid the cost of a lone distant phone call which would probably only give me a dreaded and despised "menu" and little, if any, information. Thank you! Don Lutz Virginia Beach >> - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ------------------------------------------- Don, Ann May Memorial Homeopathic Hospital with its School of Nursing was located in Spring Lake since 1907. I do not have the address but the phone number for its Nurses' Registry was 66 Spring Lake. I have a copy of a card stating the terms of the Registry members which shows how far nurses have come (not far enough yet, though) since the days my mother practiced nursing. It is my understanding that the building which housed the student nurses is still standing; however, it is used as a "nursing home" now. The Hospital has been replaced with something else. My mother met my father in Spring Lake where he once had Hofmann Plumbing Shop around 1916-1921. Infomation on this business would be appreciated. 3. hi, Gail and Nila I'm also glad Nila's request went awry. I'm searching some CLAYTON info that no one else is <LOL> and noticed Zebulon's name. he was a contemporary of my anc Thos KIRBY [b.1725] & William KIRBY [b.1759], with neighboring property & mentioned in various legal papers. I also have a Jonathan CLAYTON md.Rachel COOK whom I'd like to find more about. I suspect he may be related to Zebulon but that's just a hunch. Jonathan & Rachel had Rebecca [b1816] who md. a Thomas KIRBY [b1818]. story says they were childhood sweethearts, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were neighbors as well [hence my hunch, I suppose]. any leads from this great list welcome! :) kirby in NC kirbz@netmcr.com

    2. Nila: don't be sorry- I am researching a similar group of Claytons and found your list interesting. I have an Elizabeth Clayton, daughter of Isaac Clayton (perhaps Jospeh Isaac Clayton). Elizabeth was born in 1831, however, Her dad Isaac was born May 1796 and died October 1883-- all in Monmouth county, Howell Twp. area. I do not have any of his siblings. However, Isaac"s death cert lists his parents as: Joseph Clayton and Annie "Russelle" (spelling? hard to read). Maybe we have a hookup somewhere in here with our Claytons.... 2. Ann May School of Nursing was in Spring Lake when it began. I am not a graduate but did attend the Probie period in 1953 which was a program located in the Nurses Dorms adjoining the then Fitkin Hospital on Corlies Ave in Neptune. I do know there was an Alumni Book about two yrs. ago for a special yr celebration. Jersey Shore Medical Hospital should be able to help you. Not surprised to hear it is called something else now. Dr. Joe Ackerman was active when I was there and one of the best there ever was... his father and grandfather and I think his Uncle were active there earlier. Lots of fond memories. 1. [NJMONMOU] Monmouth Co Record Requests
    2. Nila B
    3. Geoffrey: I've seen your periodic postings on the Monmouth County Rootsweb list, and am finally organized enough to ask you to find a few things for me. I am researching Joseph Applegate and Elizabeth Clayton, who married in Monmouth Co NJ on 8 Nov 1818. I have a copy of their marriage return. According to their cemetery records in Shelby Co OH, Joseph was born 11 Jan 1793 and Elizabeth was born 9 Dec 1792. They were both born in NJ, probably Monmouth Co. What I would like you to find for me are the following: 1) Marriage record for John Applegate and Miss NEWMAN, about 1790 in Monmouth Co. These were supposedly Joseph's parents. 2) Marriage record for John Applegate and his second wife, Mary Gump. I don't know when this marriage occurred, but am guessing it was between 1793-1830. 3) Land records pinpointing where in Monmouth County John Applegate lived, and when he sold out to move to Indiana (around 1830, I'm guessing). 4) Copies of the following wills: David Clayton, 1804 David J. Clayton, 1860 Edward Clayton, 1833 Henry Clayton, 1830 Henry Clayton, 1853 James Clayton, 1850 John I. Clayton, 1847 Joseph Clayton Sr., 1816 Zebulon Clayton, 1836 These are the only men I saw in the index of wills who could possibly be Elizabeth's father. Please let me know if you have time to find these for me, and how much I would owe you. Thank you!
