My gg grandparents Patrick and Mary (Smyth) Leonard came from Galway, Ireland in 1842 and settled in Marlboro, NJ in the early 1850's. They had six children. Mary, Ellen, Bridget, Ann, Thomas, & Patrick. Patrick purchased land along Main St. in Marlboro. Mary married a Martin Conry, Ellen married Thomas Dugan, Bridget married Thomas Conway and later Patrick Morrisey. All lived their lives and Marlboro and are buried in St. Rose of Lima Cemetary. Thomas moved to Camden in 1860. But I don't know where Patrick Jr. went. He got married in 1864 to a Margret Bowers and they had two children Mary (1864) and William (1869) In 1875 he sold his fathers house to his sister Ellen but thats where I loose him. Also, has anyone recovered or have any records relating to St. Joseph Cemetary in Keyport. James Leonard is buried there but they had a fire there and lost a lot of records. Steve Leonard
Dear Suzanne...I hate to ask ...you are always so kind to everyone on the list!! SOMEDAY......I would like GRANT please? Many thanks...you are a sweetie!! Sincerely, Nancy
Hi to all those new to the list. In case you are not familiar, the Smock family was very prominent and very prolific in Monmouth County from very early on - lots of intermarriages with all the other "old time" families!!!! There was probably a Smock connection in the families you mentioned - thus the middle name. Try going back a generation or two and I am betting you will bump into a Smock. -- Candy_B cbservices@monmouth.com Researching Bennett, Cooper, Vanderveer, Woolley & related families in NJ Researching O'Brien, Brown, Boyle, Cavanaugh, Noonan, Fitzgerald, Spellman, Messier (Macey), LaCroix (Cross), Blais (Blair), Durand, Simonneau, Chabbot (Jabbot, Jabaut), Boucher, Sharron and related families in NY, New England and Quebec

Barbara, I am new to this list but wanted to respond to your query about Sarah Smock Bennet. I am researching Payntons and Paintons and have run across a christening record for two Paintons (children of Samuel Painton and Mary Snyder): Uriah Smock Painton and Caroline Smock Paynton. I have no other marriage record for Samuel or Mary Synder and would be interested if what you find out regarding the Smock middle name also pertains to these two. Perhaps there was a remarriage or the name Smock was a family tradition??? Thanks and good luck with your research. Descendants of William Davis Generation No. 1 1. REV. WILLIAM1 DAVIS was born 1663 in Radnor, Bianstephen, Wales, and died 1745 in Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co, NJ. He married (1) ELIZABETH BRISLEY 1685. She was born 1670 in Of, Westerley, Washington, RI, and died June 30, 1700 in Philadelphia, , PA. He married (2) ELIZABETH PAVIOR 1702. She died 1760. Notes for REV. WILLIAM DAVIS: William Davis b:1663 . Attended Oxford and became a Quaker and a public speaker. Settled in PA under the direction of William Penn and preached at Penneck near Philadelphia. Later became a SDB and was ordained at Westerly in 1710. Established a church at Shrewsbury, NJ where he preached until his death. For the descendants of William DAVIS see the Alfred Sun, 1946-1947. Also see BROWN-HAKES and Allied Families, pp 77-80. Another voice which challenged the hold of Quakerism in Pennsylvania was that of William Davis, sometimes called the "Erratic Missionary ' because of his tendency to stir up controversy He was born in 1663 in Wales and attended Oxford University intending to go into the ministry In Oxford he became interested in the doctrines of the Quakers and left the University before graduating. In 1684 he came with other Quakers to Pennsylvania where he became a public speaker on doctrinal issues. In 1691 he joined George Keith in his separation from the Quakers but soon had a falling out with Keith on doctrinal issues. About 1696 he, like Abel Noble, came in contact with Reverend T'homas Killings- worth and accepted many of the positions of the Baptists. He joined the Pennepek Baptist Church where he was chosen as pastor, but in less than two years he was banished from that church for expressing a heretical view of the person of Christ. Davis's contacts with Abel Noble during the Keithian dispute convinced him of the supremacy of the Moral Law and the necessity of man to observe the seventh day of the week as the Sabbath. He became a Seventh Day Baptist and pastored the church gathered in Pennepek before moving to Rhode Island and later to Shrewsbury, New Jersey His loy- alty to the denomination has never been questioned al- though both his temperament and certain unorthodox views caused considerable controversy not only among the Pennsylvania churches but in Rhode Island and New Jersey as well. Some of his descendants provided the nucleus, nearly a century later, for a migration into what is now West Virginia. Children of WILLIAM DAVIS and ELIZABETH BRISLEY are: i. MARTHA2 DAVIS, b. 1697, Westerly, Washington, R.I.. ii. WILLIAM DAVIS, b. 1699, Westerly, Washington, RI; d. Infant. iii. MARY DAVIS, b. 1700, Westerly, Washington, RI. iv. REV. JOHN DAVIS, b. November 07, 1695, Westerly, Washington, RI; d. April 18, 1751, Shrewsbury, Monmouth, Nj, (Squam). Notes for REV. JOHN DAVIS: Was chosen Elder July 19, 1746 and preached at Shrewsbury, NJ. Notes for ELIZABETH MAXSON: TMF #13. Children of WILLIAM DAVIS and ELIZABETH PAVIOR are: v. THOMAS2 DAVIS, m. BETHIA MAXSON, January 05, 1736/37, New Jersey; b. October 19, 1716, <Rhode Island>.
