Hi, Jay, Why not try contacting Ed Raser - he is still around and working on some other goodies regarding cemeteries in NJ. -- Candy_B cbservices@monmouth.com Researching Bennett, Cooper, Vanderveer, Woolley & related families in NJ Researching O'Brien, Brown, Boyle, Cavanaugh, Noonan, Fitzgerald, Spellman, Messier (Macey), LaCroix (Cross), Blais (Blair), Durand, Simonneau, Chabbot (Jabbot, Jabaut), Boucher, Sharron and related families in NY, New England and Quebec
Thank you, Susan Amicucci, for your contribution to the James Morris story - he is an ancestor of mine. I'm glad to see another person who's come across the Edward Raser article on the Battle of Navesink. I grew up in the area (in Shrewsbury) and I'm curious if you, Susan, or anyone else has an idea of exactly where this skirmish took place. I'm related to James Morris through his daughter Mary Elizabeth Morris (1813-1904) who married Obadiah Stillwell Davis (1811-1881), in the Navesink area of Middletown. Their daughter Charlotte Davis (1837-1899) married Charles Adolphus Irwin (1838-1891) a wheelwright in Navesink. Their daughter Carrie (1858-1910) married Joseph Maxson (1847-1911) of Navesink. Has anyone ever made a connection between this Davis family in Navesink (Obadiah S. Davis's parents were John Davis and Rebecca Stillwell) and any Seventh Day Baptist Davis's of Shrewsbury who did NOT go to West Virginia. Jay Czarnecki jczarnecki@home.com
Your list of tax payers intrigues me. I see a J. B. Wolsey listed. Any more about him? Ken

Euphemia Miller (his wife) d May 27, 1824, in 83rd year David Robbins d July 4, 1831, aged 60 years. Sarah Miller wife of David Robbins d. MAY 4, 1850.aged 69 yrs., 2 mos., and 15 days. Elisha Robbins died April 17, 1832, aged 63 years. The Allentown Messenger on December 7, 1905 refers to the cemetery briefly. "The oldest stone was to the memory of James Rogers, who died Jan. 2, 1734, age 20 years, and the second oldest to Mary Rogers, who died

Hi Ken, I made a mistake (a lot I noticed yesterday in typing, anhow) Elizabeth Pearce is my third, not second great grandmother. There is documentation at Monmouth Archives that suggests an Elizabeth Pearce in fact had children with John Morris. I will dig that out and send you a copy. Same old problem.... don't know if it is our Eliabeth or an other. Stillwell also adds to questions on Elizabeth having a child with John Morris. We will need to explore it further to see if so. Elizabeth was not young when she married my John Brown and they both probably had children before they married by their ages. Good to hear from you. George Allen b. Sandwich, MAcomes down that line to my Elizabeth Pearce and your Emanuel Pearce. He married Elizabeth Hulett which is another line of mine and I dont have much on George's wife. If you have any dates on her I would appreciate any you would share. Jackiel

Jackie, This is more than I knew about your ancestors. Good to know. I will probably be asking you more questions. I have been trying to fathom out the Allen families. I have been doing also the Estle, La Fetra, and Woolley families. Of course Elizabeth Pearce Brown Elmer is in my tree as my mother is a decendant of Elizabeth's parents through Elizabeth's brother, Emanuel Job Pearce. Have you learned any more about Jeremiah Pearce or his ancestors? Another question: I received from you information that Elizabeth Peace Brown Elmer might have been first married to a John Morris. Is this true? Do you have anything more than his name? Ken Wiltz
I do not have information about the Bennetts, but would like to contribute the following on James Morris' captivity: "In an affadavit dated 26 June 1839, Matthias Hulse of Monmouth Co. states that he and James Morris were both taken prisoner on 13 Feb 1777, and that they "together with others were taken to New York, and confined in the prison ship and the sugar house, until the 12th day of May 1778, when this Deponent and the said James Morris together with three others, who are now dead, were exchanged and released by the enemy, and they all five returned home together; that the said James Morris was out on parole for a short time, during said confinement". In another affadvit William Bennett Sr. recollects seeing James Morris when he first returned home: "He had been very sick with the small-pox, and looked very miserable, his hair was nearly all out of his head..." (GMNJ 45:57-58, American Prisoners Taken at the Battle of Navesink, 1777, by Edward J. Raser). The reference for the affadavits is USRP:W-864. USRP:W stands for U.S. Revolutionary Pensions: Widow. I have begun researching my DENNETT line and find that they were well known around Long Branch. Particularly of interest to me now is to locate the marriage record of Alonzo Hazard Dennett to either or both Anna Maria TUNISON and Elizabeth B. BOND, his two wives, married 1870 and 1887, respectively. Alonzo was the son of Asa DENNETT and Mary HAZARD. Any info or suggestions greatly appreciated and will be rewarded with a bottle of Colorado sunshine. Thanks. Ron Valliere bottomline@msn.com
