    1. [NJMONMOU] 1910 census project
    2. Anita Clayton
    3. Time for an update. The project is plugging along. (For those new to the list - Some of us are transcribing for internet publication the Monmouth Co. 1910 Census from donated CDs at home.) Things have been really quiet. I know I am finding it a bit harder than I thought it might be in some ways and easier in other ways. The CDs are great to work with, but I am finding it hard to actually sit down and work on my assingment. That old self discipline thing. Time to update me. How is everyone else doing? Some, like Rick, have been working really hard I know. Would everyone email me with an update, no matter what you have been able to get done so far, even if you haven't started yet, hey, I understand how it is. If Julie Baechle is out there, I don't know if you are getting my messages, please contact me. (That is one problem with email, you never really know if people receive the mail you send, sometimes it must sit in cyberspace of an inactive address, where is that anyway?) I had her down for Middletown and Holmdel, and haven't heard from her, so they may be available again, I don't know. If anyone has decided that they can't do it after volunteering, I understand. Please contact me. I have received two more donations, and one more volunteer. I have CDs still available. and about 1/3 of the EDs left for assingment. I recevied an anonymous donation from a lister (I know who but she doesn't want her real name published) back a month or two ago . Also, Marion Currier sent $20.00 and I mailed her a #900 CD and paper forms. She will try Allenhurst, ED 56. I had another email crash recently and lost all my mail folders. So I need to type in my old assingment list of EDs and volunteers, unless someone has my old message and could send it back to me. The email is there I just have to find it, but right now don't have the time to do it. This happened before, I guess I save too many messages. I will be away, but not leaving through Newark airport :-), and not answering my mail starting Monday for 2 weeks, hubby will be here gathering mail, but answers will have to wait. Please think about volunteering if you haven't all ready. It is a great project. If you want to try just doing a few pages, let me know. Sandy Hook Proving Grounds is only 2 pages and still available! Englishtown or Raritan are only 5. I was surprised that the big places went first. Still available are Atlantic Highlands, Atlantic Twp, Avon by the Sea?, Bradley Beach, Highlands, Howell and Farmingdale, West Farms Village, Englishtown, Manalapan X2, Manasquan, Ft. Hancock, Millstone, Raritan Twp (Keansburg), Raritan , Red Bank X3, Rumson, Sea Bright, South Shrewsbury and West Long Branch. Middletown? Holmdel? Anita

    2. Egads! I didn't want to stir up so much about your airport, but it seems to have gotten you all talking about your hometowns and that is good. Sounds to me that you would all make good members of your local Chambers of Commerce, Visitors Bureaus, etc. That's good too. We out here on the west coast do not hear enough about the east other than the NYC shows on the telly. We could use some more info about your lovely land. So keep it going. Ken of California

    3. Hi Joyce, I'm at exit 80 and all there is is construction, but the town itself, is a beautiful, well maintained area, with an outstanding school system. It's like being in the country, with the river running through it and only a ten minute drive to the ocean. As for the Newark Airport, it's a shame that outsiders have to see the Airport; nothing changes there and it certainly does not give people a very good impression of our lovely state. Have you been to any of our train stations lately? There's another story.... Ruth Sickles, Marcine Beachwood, NJ

    1. [NJMONMOU] EXCERPTS from Hy. of Mt. Holly, NJ by Henry C. Shinn
    2. To readers of the 1860 census Burlington Co., NJ...many have expressed interest regarding the occupations of the citizens of Mt. Holly...so dusted off my History of Mt. Holly by Henry C. Shinn, published by the Mt. Holly Herald 1957, reprinted by Herald Printing House, 1977...and found these tidbits with some familiar names attached: "Chap. 2, p. 9--Had it not been for the enterprise of Edward GASKILL and his associates Mount Holly might have remained a small country village...Perhaps Gaskill had the water power in mind when he took the southern part of the tract as his share...he built a saw mill near the former office of the Mount Holly Water Co...but in 1723 Gaskill alluded to (the mill). OnJune 7 of the same year he sold the (land) to Thomas BRIAN." "June 23, 1723, Thomas BRIAN conveyed the entire property to EDWARD GASKILL, JAMES LIPPINCOTT, ABRAHAM BICKLY AND SAMUEL BRIAN. These men built the first dam...Bickly sold his fourth interest to Jonathan SLEEPER and JAMES LIPPINCOTT in 1725." "A new grist mill was built in 1735...(it) was rebuilt by Richard COX and Robert DAVIDSON in 1796 and destroyed by fire in 1910." MAHLON STACY, ISAAC PEARSON and JOHN BURR bought a tract of land south of the Rancocas in 1730, and erected the iron works on the bank of the creek just east of the Pine Street bridge. It employed many workmen and made camp kettles for the army during the Revolution..." "On May 29, 1730, Josiah WHITE, and experienced weaver from Salem County, purchased from Samuel GASKILL, son of Edward Gaskill, the fulling mill...It was in operation for more than 100 years, and was destroyed by fire April 9, 1881, while it was known asthe Halsey cotton mill." "The contract (to rebuild the dam) was signed by EDWARD GASKILL, JAMES LIPPINCOTT, EBENEZER LARGE, WILLIAM MURRELL, THOMAS SHINN as guardian of the son of Jonathan Sleeper, deceased; THOMAS WEBSTER, THOMAS ATKINSON, WILLIAM PARKER, JR., owners of the grist mill and saw mill; JOSIAH WHITE of the fulling mill, and ISAAC PEARSON, MAHLON STACY, AND JOHN BURR, owners of the irone works." "In 1811 RICHARD COX and CHARLES SHREVE moved the saw mill to the site of the destroyed iron works on Pine St. A new mill was built in 1869 by the Shreves,..." "Soon after the turn of the century a paper mill was established on Wall Street,...JESSE COX,...is said to have operated it at one time...the manager, SAMUEL T. LEVIS, then began the manufacture of paper in a building near the site of th original saw mill, and continued operations until 1856. That same year HULME and SHREVE, owners of the grist mill, erected a large fram building west of the Levis mill, which was occupied by SEMPLE, BURNETT& CO, manufacturers of cotton thread. The business prospered....employing 400 workers at one time. Eventually the mill became part of a large carpet mill..." MaisieAnn@aol.com

    1. Re: [NJMONMOU] MORRIS Marriage in Long Branch
    2. DeMarco
    3. I would like to request help with my own MORRIS deadend: Mary Elizabeth MORRIS married George E. ARCHER on July 25, 1869 at the Reformed Church of Long Branch. She was age 22 at the time, so she was probably born in 1846 or 1847. The 1880 census stated she was born in New York. My grandfather, Clarence Nathaniel HORNER, was buried in the MORRIS plot at Woodbine Cemetery in Oceanport, so I assume that the MORRIS individuals in the plot were related to his grandmother. I have not been able to visit the plot to check out the MORRIS burials, but perhaps will have a chance to do this on August 24th or 25th when I will be visiting NJ (I live in VA). Another clue is that Mary Elizabeth (MORRIS) ARCHER's husband's estate was administered by a Clifton L. MORRIS, undertaker, in September 1926. Perhaps he was a brother-in-law. Does anyone have my Mary Elizabeth MORRIS in their family tree, or know of any MORRIS individuals from NY who settled in or near Long Branch? Regards, Margaret demarco@ix.netcom.com
