I have a work-in-progress concerning "LAKEs of Hunterdon Co, NJ". I feel I shouldn't just post the info to this list since the file is getting kind of big at about 50K. If anyone would like me to send them this info then send me a private email and I'll mail it directly to you. Many of the LAKEs of Hunterdon Co stem from the LAKEs of Gravesend and Staten Island who married into Dutch families. -- Marshall Lake -- [email protected] -- http://melake.erols.com

very often a deed was recorded when somebody [mentioned in the deed] died, or some other reason made it 'important'. that is, if they hadn't gotten around to it before, as was said. doesn't help a lot, does it, in tracking people & places... :¬) kirby in NC [email protected] --searching 2 elusive deeds in Monmouth co: one betw Thos KIRBY & Margaret/John COX Jr 1765 and one betw Thos KIRBY & Sarah/John PANCOAST [recorded] 1807--

GSNJ- MCGS, Your groups were so very wonderful to respond to our desire to have a brief outline of points made by guest presenters etc after an event those of us from out of town would be unable to attend. I, for one, very, very much appreciated reading about the topic. I hope you will continue sending this information, including the attached request which also interests me.. We DO read and value this material and feel it will prove to be a valuable service you are providing as an outreach effort. Thank you again to those who took the time to see this project through. Sometimes the failure to record a deed was deliberate: Consider the case of famed marine engine pioneer James P. Allaire: One of his daughters pestered him for a farm that she knew she would be getting in his will. He reluctantly gave in to her incessant nagging about it and gave her the deed to the property with explicit instructions not to record it until he said so. He was having financial difficulties and was trying to keep his creditors at bay, as they well knew him to be possessed of a fortune in real estate. If the deed were recorded, the creditors would notice and think he was beginning to put his property holdings out of his hands. Wouldn't you know it? Allaire's daughter went right ahead and almost immediately had the deed recorded. Sure enough, the creditors came a calling to papa who had to do a lot of sweet talking and placating to satisfy them that he was not giving away his property to abscond from his debts. It was a financial and personal headache for which he would never forgive his daughter. (which is why she only got a token sum of money in his will.) Scott D. That is not all that uncommon. Some deeds were never recorded. Other times deeds were recorded when the grantee got around to it. People were different back then, now if you get a deed you better run to the courthouse to get it recorded because someone else may be trying to record a deed on the same property. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, June 05, 2002 5:29 PM Subject: [NJMON] Question about a deed. Hi- Can anyone tell me why a deed transferring property from a father to his daughters would be written in 1873, but not received and recorded by the clerks office until 1892? I have a case where Peter Parker does this with 2 daughters. The deed grants them undivided interest in the property but allows him to reside on the property until his death. Is it possible somehow that 1892 is when he died? Any ideas? Thanks- -Jeff ==== NJMONMOU Mailing List ==== FAM_TREE.LST not found. Create new genealogist? The only one I'm familiar with is the master index at the Monmouth County Courthouse and the duplicate copy on microfilm at the Monmouth County Archives. For the really old deeds, Joe Dangler abstracted a lot of information from the ancient deed book at Monmouth County Archives. It is not a complete listing of all deeds and it is abstracted information, not complete texts. We have copies at Ocean County Historical Society. Scott D. In response to the post regarding the GSNJ-MCGS genealogical meeting -- would it be possible to post a list of the "Little known and little used rescources in Monmouth Co." for those of us who may be way too far away to attend this meeting? Thank You - Terri (in Seattle)
Hi Cheryl, Yes, there is a deed index by surname for Burlington County - also Colonial Conveyances, which are kept separately from the Deed Indexes. As for Monmouth County, I know I have used one for that county as well. I thought that was under East Jersey Proprietors, though, so am unclear as to how I obtained it. I may be wrong about the EJP, however. I am also unclear as to whether or not the EJP have turned over their indexes to the NJ State Archives - they used to be in the County Seats of each county affected by the EJP. Is there a deed index or a grantor/grantee index by surname for Monmouth County? I am trying to find out if there are any deeds listed concerning either Henry Reed or his son Doughty Reed anywhere in Monmouth. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com

Monmouth County Genealogy Society [MCGS] will present an Ethnic Heritage Day on Saturday, June 8th at the Monmouth County Library & Archives, Symmes Road, Manalapan, from 10am - 2pm. Admission is FREE. Experienced family historians representing a wide range of ethnicities will be on hand to answer individual questions about researching the family tree. Celebrating Diversity in New Jersey, our experts will provide help in searching for African-American, Hispanic, Italian, German, Irish, English, Jewish, Native American, Ukrainian, and other ancestors. Come discover that genealogy is just as much fun, just as rewarding, and yes, just as frustrating, searching for ancestors who came to this country in the 20th century as for those who came earlier. Also, there will be four lectures provided... 10am - German 11am - Hispanic 12noon - Irish 1pm - Italian Best of all, the advice and lectures are FREE, courtesy of MCGS and our generous volunteers!
