-------- Original Message -------- Subject: FW: Atlantic Highlands Baptist Church - Leonardo Baptist Church] Date: Thu, 21 Nov 2002 07:30:24 -0700 From: Elsie Saar <[email protected]> Reply-To: [email protected] Organization: Home To: [email protected] To: NJMONMOU-L CC: Anky Zentjens Date: Thu, 21 Nov 2002 13:30:09 +0100 From: "Anky Zentjens" Hi, I while ago someone gave me 2 plates on one plate is a church it is a chirch in New Jersey called "Leonardo Baptist Church" it is a anniversery plate the 75th. It is in Leonardo, New Jersey I take that leonardo is a part of New jersey that is called that way. On the back of the plate is written that the church used to be in a other area and was called the Atlantic Highlands Baptist Church that it changed name in 1928 july. that in 1961 the reverend was the rev. William Carr. The plate is dated 1964 so that is a while back. I want first to know if there is someone who says oh I want that plate that is my church etc. or that someone knows that the church will like to have it it is in perfect order. And I like to know a little more about the church does it still exists? I wil gladly send it to whomever would like to have it. ROCKLAND COUNTY JOURNAL, FEBRUARY 25, 1899 OBITUARY Washington L. Hope Washington Lafayette Hope died at his home at Shrewsbury, N. J. on Monday, of pneumonia. He was born in New York, Aug. 4, 1824. His father, Reuben Hope, was one of the New York officials delegated to meet Gen. Lafayette when he visited this country by invitation of this Government. Mr. Hope was engaged in mercantile business at first, but afterward engaged in farming in Rockland County and then at Shrewsbury. Last September he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding. He was Grand Worthy Chief Templar and State Lecturer for the order. When the late Clinton B. Fisk ran for Governor of New Jersey on the Prohibition ticket Mr. Hope was a candidate for Congress on the same ticket. He had been a Baptist for more than forty years and was a deacon and Sunday school Superintendent of the Eatontown Baptist Church for twenty-five years. A widow and three sons survive him. The deceased was a brother or William P. Hope, of Haverstraw, one of the oldest residents of Rockland County, who will be ninety years old next June.
Looking for children of James Bollen and his wife Elizabeth Godfrey. He was son of Capt. James-1 Bollen, who became Secretary of the Province of East Jersey in 1665 under the governor, Sir Philip Carteret. James-2 Bollen was b. 1663-1667 (after 1663 because he was under 21 on 10 May 1683 when he chose Samuel Moore and Nathaniel Fitz Randolph of Woodbridge to be his guardians, and before 1667 as he probably was of age 1688/9 when he married). He m. (1st) Feb 24 1688/9 Elizabeth Godfrey of New York (ancestry unknown) (New York Marriages Previous to 1784, p. 585). James and Elizabeth Bollen were members of the Baptist Church in Middletown, NJ in 1712. (Stillwell, John E., Historical and Genealogical Miscellany, Data Relating to the Settlement and Settlers of New York and New Jersey, Vol. II, p. 41). By 25 Jul 1714 Elizabeth (Godfrey) Bollen was dead since on that date James Bollen was married to Martha (Hutchinson) Dennis, daughter of George Hutchinson of Burlington Co. & Philadelphia, and widow of John Dennis of Gloucester Co. ("1714 July 25. James Bollen and wife Martha, formerly Dennis, took the inventory of the estate of Rachel Hutchinson of Burlington Co., N.J." (NJ Arch., 23:251.) Rachel Hutchinson was sister of Martha. John Dennis and Martha Hutchinson had issue. George Hutchinson's will made 8 Apr 1698 in Philadelphia, mentions daughter Martha and her daughter Mary. The will of John Dennis of Newton Township, Gloucester Co., made 28 Dec 1712, mentions daughter Rebecca and brother William. He also had a brother Samuel Dennis. Martha Bollen, wife of James was buried Philadelphia 14 Jun 1724. (Hinshaw, Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. II, p. 441-2.) NOTE: She was not a Quaker, but the notice of her death is in this book. James Bollen m. (3rd) in Philadelphia 1725 Ann Huges/Hughes. (GMNJ Jan 1981, p. 30). No more info on Ann Huges/Hughs/Hughes. It is not known when or where James Bollen died, but it was after 2 July 1725 when "James Bollen of Philadelphia sold land to Gershom Mott of Middletown, Monmouth Co., West Jersey." I rather suspect he died in Philadelphia, but that's just a guess. So now that you've waded through all this ---- does anybody know who were the children of James-2 Bollen and his first wife, Elizabeth Godfrey? A "Miss Boleyn/Bollen" m. c1725 James-1 Harris, b. Bristol, Somersetshire, England c1700; d. Elizabethtown, NJ 6 Apr 1763; bur in the old St. John's Churchyard of Elizabethtown. Lyon Memorial, Vol. II -- Families of Henry and Richard Lyon, states that she was probably a daughter of James-2 Bollen, son of Capt. James-1 Bollen. If "Miss Boleyn/Bollen" is a daughter of James-2 Bollen, then she must have been by his first wife, Elizabeth Godfrey. There's always the possibility that James-2 Bollen adopted the children of his second wife, Martha (Hutchinson) Dennis. And that could mean one of her Dennis daughters was "Miss Boleyn/Bollen." Plod, plod, plod. Sincerely, Patty Myers [email protected]

Would anyone know where someone who belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church of Howell Township circa 1849-59 would be buried? I am looking specifically for George and Winfield Duncan (father and son). Thank you. Linda
Hi All, I purchased the book _Rose Hill Cemetery, Tombstone Inscriptions and Index_ (1995) from the compiler, Carolyn B. Heuser, 109 Gravel Hill Road, Freehold, NJ 07728. It's 110 pages. I don't recall the price. I recommend it; it's very well done! FOUND AT:http://www.monmouth.com/~mcha3/cemetery.html This is a listing of all cemeteries for which the Library and Archives holds at least one transcription of burials. For the most part, these lists of interrments have been taken from headstones; there are a few instances where these lists have come from the church records. Often, there will be more than one work for a single cemetery, and these can differ in content. Where more than one transcription exists, it is important that the researcher compare them. Many of these works have been indexed by name. **Note: "Blue Binders" refers to: Stanley, D. Oil painting of nine Bradley Beach servicemen who were killed in World War II have been donated to the Bradley Beach Historical Society by resident John B. Gregg. They were painted by artist David S. Tanner in 1948 and hung in the Bradley Beach American Legion until that organization sold the building. The pictures were recently found in the basement of the VFW Building in Asbury Park and rescued by Mr. Gregg. The Bradley Beach Historical Society is raising funds for the restoration of the paintings. We viewed them last night. What a wonderful treasurer. Borough Historian and President of the Historical Society, Shirley Ayers is seeking information on the nine men in the pictures. Only one family seems to remain in Bradley Beach. The names are: Robert Broedel Cecil Cahill Edwin Dempsey Walter E. Dessart Murry Dribben John Ford Walter Handwell Ray Palermo Father Poli George R. Guest: Linda Crannell, who calls herself "The Poorhouse Lady." Mary Bakeman, a St. Paul genealogist. Related Links Over the Hill to the Poor House (MPR News) http://news.mpr.org/programs/midday/listings/md20020729.shtml Over the Hill to the Poor House July 29, 2002 By Dan Gunderson and Chris Julin, Minnesota Public Radio The American dream is freedom and financial security. But it's possible to lose everything. One day you have a job, a family, a house. Then there's an accident, an illness, a poor choice. One misfortune piles on another. One hundred years ago, if you lost your health, or your mind, you might have faced the poorhouse. It was a terrifying possibility - the slide from working, healthy person to the poorhouse, an anonymous death, and an unmarked grave. Thousands of people died in poorhouses, and today we park cars and grow corn on their graves. Poorhouses disappeared after World War II, but some people wonder how far we've come from a time when poor people were simply thrown away. History of the Poorfarm It was thought poorhouses would be a more efficient way of caring for the poor, thus reducing cost for local government. It was also anticipated that by forcing people to go to a less than pleasant place if they wanted public assistance, many poor could be discouraged from seeking help. Working at the Poorhouse The poorhouse is a mostly forgotten part of American history. But a few people still remember - especially those who worked in the poorhouses. Looking for Graves Many of the residents of Minnesota's poorhouses and poorfarms ended up in unmarked graves - in unmarked cemeteries that few people know about. Now some are trying to find and preserve those graves, to provide the dead the dignity they did not have in life. View photos of poorhouse cemeteries http://www.poorhousestory.com
