I've found no evidence to support that. Another line of family tradition says he was at Valley Forge and had his ears & nose frozen off. That's a little more believable, but again, no substantive evidence. I've found a mention of him serving in a NJ Regiment & applying for a pension (though I've never found pension papers). I'll check on it and see what I can find in my records.
