I have a copy of a deed from the East Jersey Proprietors to Capt Edward Clements made in 1684 for 504 acres on the Raritan River near Perth Amboy. The original handwriting is very hard to decipher but I think it indicates that Capt Clements had already purchased a right to the land from the Indians and was getting a new title from the Proprietors. Does anyone have any clue as to what was going on at that particular time? I have seen an entry in other records which indicates that Edward Clements paid taxes on land in Middlesex Co in 1669...Whether the tax record was for the same property as that on the Raritan is unknown. I would welcome any information on the possibilities. I am aware of the struggles over land titles in the area and wonder if Clements bought his property twice....If he owned some other property in Middlesex Co I can find no record of either its purchase or sale.
