I have located property by going to the census that indicate if the person owned land and looking for the land owners near by. I also got the deeds that name the adjacent land owners in the description of the property. Then I was able to locate them on corresponding maps that showed land owners. This way you can find them, even though they didn't own land themselves. I was able to compare the old maps to present ones and match the shape of some of the roads and figure out which road it would be now. The old land ownership maps usually only gave last name or last name and first initial, which isn't enough if it is a common name so knowing neighbors is a big help. Keep in mind that census takers went around blocks and not necessarily the length of the street. I don't know what is available for Middlesex as far as maps go, but I did it for Monmouth for about 1870.
