    3. As we wrote before, Samuel Blackford probably had two wives; the second, who was probably the mother of his children, being named Anna. Her surname could have been Smalley, but she was not the daughter of John and Ann (Walden/Waldron) Smalley. Their daughter on 23 June 1660/61 married John Bangs, son of Edward and Lydia (Hicks) Bangs. See "The Great Migration Begins" by Robert Charles Anderson (NEHGS 1995), Vol. 3, page 1689. [While I am sure Mr. Anderson would admit to not being perfect, he is among the leading genealogists of today]. In addition to daughter Providence (who m. Peter Runyon), Samuel and Anna Blackford had other children, among them a daughter Anna Blackford. Anna married (1) Benjamin Manning, (2) Joseph Drake, and (3) Isaac Drake. [See "Who was Hannah Blackford" by Oliver D. Drake, in GMNJ 41:129-131 (1966), reprinted in Genealogies of N.J. Families (Geneal. Pub. Co. 1996), Vol. 1 page 132]. As Oliver Drake points out, her name was Anna but her father, in his will on 12 Feb. 1711/12, called Anna, Hanna -- probably to distinguish her from her mother, who was Anna. So, who was the wife of Samuel Blackford (and mother of his children) -- somebody named Anna. She could have been a Smalley, but she wasn't the daughter of John and Ann (Walden) Smalley, according to the most reliable sources I have seen.
