Author: JoMac53 Surnames: Harrison Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newjersey.counties.middlesex/4122/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have Thomas Harrison, abt 1839 England, living with his wife Eliza, abt 1844 NY, and 4-year-old son Henry in South Amboy in 1870. Thomas was a machinist and is listed as an alien. Little Henry was actually born in Jersey City, not NY as the census states. I can't find this family anywhere in 1880 so this is where my trail goes cold. Henry is getting married in Red Bank, Monmouth county, by 1888 and moves back to Jersey City with is bride but his mom & pop never show up again as far as I can find. If anyone has any info. that could help, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. Jo Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There aren't any photos of the shop at Rutgers Special Collections. I have searched there, the state archives, the Library of Congress, and the internet for older photos. It just appears that none currently exist in the public domain. Believe me, I really would have liked that for the exhibit. By the way, the date for the blacksmith shop opening is set for October 7, 2007. That is our annual Founder's Day celebration at the Village. A program will start at 2:00 in the Indian Queen Tavern and the official opening will be afterwards around 3:00, followed by refreshments. You will definitely be receiving an invitation in the coming months. In addition, we located Cornelius' grave in a cemetery in New Brunswick. Took some time but we finally got it. To answer the question about photos of New Brunswick, check Rutgers Special Collections. I think all the other online repositories have been covered in the above responses. If you do go to Rutgers in search of pictures would you keep an eye open for the Cornelius V. Farley Blacksmith shop that was located on Burnett Street. The shop is now in Johnson Park at the Olde New Jersey Villiage and is scheduled to open in October. This shop belonged to my Great Great Grandfather Cornelius V. and then his son Patrick and to Patricks 5 sons. The last one to run the shop was Henry Farley. They moved the shop about 1960 where it stayed for years. I was able to see it years ago and until recently did'nt know where they had moved it. I was contacted by one of the Historians through email to notify me of the opening, he has no old pics. Probably there arent any but I thought I'd give it a shot. While I could see that compared to the deteriorated condition of the 70's and 80's, the subsequent improvements would almost have to look better. But today's trendy little shops and bistros have nothing of the class of the stores that lined the streets prior to the 60's. For starters those shops had quality salespeople who had experience and the customer was the priority. They dressed with care for their job and behaved professionally. I had been to more then a few of the businesses when returning back in '99 for a month. Many of them are allowed to be run by inept 'help', inexperienced students for the most part who had to strain themselves to give you 5 minutes of time. It's just the way of things and while the stores are visually attractive, it pretty much ends at the door. Those books you mentioned that are pubished "Images of America' I think they are called are excellent. However the one for New Brunswick does not have any photos from the 1940's and 1950's...not one. I am referring to stores like P.J. Youngs,Fixlers,Wolfsons,Style Shop,Melburns, House of Fashion,Nathans, etc. It would seem that since many if not all were family owned that there would be dozens around. Next time I am up in Brunswick I will try Rutgers Library. Thanks though.... Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
