Spencers had a hotel in Herbertsville in the 1860's, but had other property as well. Do you know if the county clerk's office might be able to give an approximate location of property according to census book, page or district? NJ is a long trip from here, so am trying to have as much info. as possible before making the trip. Thanks, Roda25 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. As I understand it Forstate owned up to and west of Route 130. I am researching ownership of this area west of the NJ Turnpike Exit 8A on both sides of Route 130. This tract south of Stults Road on the north and and to I think Cranbury-South River Road on the East was owned by Col. John Wetherill and his estate up until 1824/26. Is any of this land you are looking for? I have been led to believe that Forsgate purchased some of this land in the mid-1900s. Hi Roda 25, What Spencer are you researching? I am interested in anything I can find on Joshua Spencer who was the father of Francis Spencer who married Richard Coryall. Would you know anything about them? Thanks. Roberta Summers ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
. Do you know if the county clerk's office might be > able to give an approximate location of property according to census > book, page or district? I have located property by going to the census that indicate if the person owned land and looking for the land owners near by. I also got the deeds that name the adjacent land owners in the description of the property. Then I was able to locate them on corresponding maps that showed land owners. This way you can find them, even though they didn't own land themselves. I was able to compare the old maps to present ones and match the shape of some of the roads and figure out which road it would be now. The old land ownership maps usually only gave last name or last name and first initial, which isn't enough if it is a common name so knowing neighbors is a big help. Keep in mind that census takers went around blocks and not necessarily the length of the street. I don't know what is available for Middlesex as far as maps go, but I did it for Monmouth for about 1870.
Are there any online sites with images of Middlesex and/or Morris County, back in the 1700s? My g(5)gfather Daniel Cooper started out in Piscataway, and then bought a large plot of land in Long Hill, it would be fun to see a map that showed his "plantation" ... Thanks, Chris
I suggest you check with Middlesex County Clerk's records of deeds. Now I can trace ownership back to about 1870's, the period I'm looking for. Kim's website is a godsend for more than one reason. Thanks to both of you. Joseph MORRIS was b. Jun 1792 NJ--perhaps New Brunswick, Middlesex Co., NJ. He d. 9 May 1868 Porter, Niagara Co., NY. One of his daughters stated that he was born in New Brunswick per the census. He was supposedly a drummer in the War of 1812; his wife, Maria(h) SHELLEY (1798 Essex or Sussex Co., NJ - 14 Aug 1889 Niagara Co., NY) applied for a widow's pension, but was denied. Unfortunately, she was not able to give any definite information as they were married 15 Nov 1814 (per the application) in Sussex Co., NJ, after he would have served. In the widow's pension application, it stated that he enlisted in New Brunswick, Middlesex Co., NJ in Capt. Wm. LOWE's Co. of the NJ Militia (the Bureau states there is no such Company) and was discharged at Sandy Hook, Monmouth Co., NJ in 1813. It was also mentioned that she "recollects he told of members of the Co. getting Watermelons." --Does anyone know why the watermelons would be significant? Other information I have suggests that his father was named Robert and he had siblings William, Robert and Hannah, all "long-lived", but I have not been able to substantiate any of this. Any help would be much appreciated! --------------------------------- Be a better Heartthrob. Get better relationship answers from someone who knows. Yahoo! Answers - Check it out.

The trees that were already there were huge dead things, bare and an odd color. And the pools of liquid(?) that appeared all over the place were all shiny blue and green, slimy and oily too with a bad smell. And we are talking many, many acres. Employees would sometimes be sitting on loading docks just feet away from these areas not realizing just how dangerous it was and may still be for all I know. I know very little about Rahway or Colonia area. The only military base I remember is Camp Kilmer which was busy during WWII when I was born but active again in 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution when the refugees came over and stayed there. There was the Raritan Arsenal where apparently there was alot of ammunition dumping etc. going on causing it to become a major hazardous toxic site. This was kept quiet during the years that so many companies had warehouses there and thousands of employees were exposed to that mess not knowing anything about it. The airport was called Forsgate airport which like most airports are destroyed in the name of progress and houses and apartment are planted wiping out lots of history. Flew in and out of there as a Kid once also later went to the club for dinner. George Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I had the good fortune to work with a fella from Rahway years ago who told me a lot about the Rahway area. Rahway was the pass town for the people stationed at the base which took up a lot of Colonia. I have reviewed a number of old aviation maps but the don't show this for some reason, my best guess would be security. The administration Building was located where the Shop Rite is now located. Thanks for your attention and input that's how we learn about the past most of it never gets into books anymore. George Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I sure wish we could help you with that. I do remember a place called Dutch Meile's though because my sister and her friends used to go there quite a bit. However I do remember Joanne Campbell from Dick Clark's Bandstand show. She was that perky little blonde who sang a song about a mountain top. Am I right? There was one time he came with some of the regulars from his show to Arnold Constable at a teen dance about 1957 and she was with him along with Fabian. The dance was held on the rooftop. Nice times...:) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
