    1. McDowell name in 18th century Middlesex Co?
    2. Hello Folks, I just discovered that my James Thompson of Or. Co. NY married Marah McDowell. So have started researching McDowells. Have found a John McDowell from Middle Town, NJ purchased property in Or. Co. NY from Sayers in 1788 and also Alexander McDowell sold property to the Piscataway Baptist ch. in 1731. Is anyone researching McDowell name? I have Runyon and VanCourt ancestors of NJ and Wisner, Thompson, Jayne, Woodhull, and Carpenter of Or. Co., NY. Thank you, Phoebe in CA

    1. Search Fee Increase - N.J. State Archives
    2. John Cresseveur
    3. Hi Folks, I recently submitted a search to the New Jersey Archives. P.O. Box 307, 185 West State Street, Trenton, NJ 08625-0307. Included in their response was the following notice as to the increase in search rates: "As part of a long-term preservation strategy at the State Archives, effective March 1, 1999, the basic fee for searching vital records - for the period May, 1848, to May, 1878 only - will be raised from $4.00 to $10.00 per record searched. The fee will cover a search of up to five (5) consecutive years for each requested record. Each additional block of five consecutive years searched at the same time will cost another $10.00. All funds raised from the increased fee will be designated exclusively for preserving and re-microfilming the vital records in the State Archives. Currently, the original volumes must be handled for each search because most of the existing microfilm copies are partly illegible. With thousands of searches done annually, these heavy, oversize volumes have already deteriorated significantly over the past thirty years. The bindings are loose or broken, and thousands of pages are ragged and torn. Professional conservators charge up to $3,000 per volume to disband, deacidify, and mend them; the microfilming will cost an additional $1,000 each. Due to the size of the vital records collection (100+ volumes) and the high cost of preservation, the State Archives expects that this will be a long-term project, taking up to a decade to complete. While we regret the necessity of raising the search fee for these popular records, we firmly believe it will be an effective, timely and equitable way to prevent the disintegration and loss on one of New Jersey's most important historical and genealogical resources. If you have questions or concerns about this policy, please contact Archives reference services at (609) 292-6265." John Cresseveur

    3. Rhoda -- it may be that Satchwell is the misspelling. For a discussion of the early Shatswell family, including several named Theophilus, see "A New Look at the Corwin and Shatswell Families", by David A. Macdonald, in NEHGR 150:180 (April 1996). With regard to Johnson Hoagland, do you have any data on his family, names of parents, etc. -- that might help in identifying the other people in your query. His father is believed to be Theophilus Satchwell, also reported to have been born in New Jersey. Joseph's sister, Sarah/Sallie, married Johnson Hoagland. The whole family moved to Kentucky in the early 1800's. Satchwell is often misspelled in public documents, as Satchwill, Sachell, Sechell, Shatswell, among others. Theophilus is a very common first name within this family (and also misspelled a lot!) Any leads would be helpful. I am new to New Jersey research and don't know where to look. Thanks! Rhoda Meier

    1. Seeking HENRY Resources
    2. Doug Garber
    3. Hello Middlesex County, Presently, members of the HENRY surname list are building a web site that contains an index of their HENRYs. When completed, it should be helpful to many HENRY family historians. I have been asked to conduct a search for links to HENRY online resources like personal web pages, and county and local genealogy association resource pages. If you have substantial HENRY information on your web page or know of HENRY information on your county or other local web site, please send the links to Judy Henry at jchenry@flash.net , so that they might be included in the new HENRY site. If you have some HENRY data that is not on a website, you may wish to subscribe to the list by sending an email to: HENRY-L-request@rootsweb.com containing as the only text the word "subscribe" (no quotes) in the body of the message. After you get a message confirming your subscription, post your information by email to HENRY-L@rootsweb.com . Thank you. 1. Colonial Records Source
    2. Lois Masters
    3. Researchers.... Colonial research record sources are not so easy to find. This might help some of you. If you have colonial New Jersey ancestry and have exhausted the Gardiner Collection, marriage records, church records and the other standard selections, you might try these three films which can be ordered at your local Family History Center. FHL460040: East Jersey Commissions 1803-1774; FHL460041: East Jersey Commissions 1718-1806 and FHL460042 East Jersey Commissions 1772-1856. (Most of this last film is 19th Century) These are military commissions, sheriff and other appointed officials, licenses to run a ferry or to be a lawyer, coroners, license to purchase land from the Indians in the earliest of times and permission to establish church; discharges from the Revolution and horse theft, murders, lists of commissioners. There were approximately 124 women named and charged with fornication from 1768 to 1776. Most were out of the court at Burlington - in later years, their town of residence was also given. BTW, in that same time only one man was charged with fornication and one man was charged with adultery. Hmmmmmmm. Two naturalizations Theodorus Jacobus Freelinghuison became a naturalized citizen on 20 April 1742. Simon Hinrod became a naturalized citizen on 10 Aug 1763. Of course, the notable people are mentioned much more frequently...but still you may find a reference to your ancestor. If you think it would be valuable, I can post the 124 women charged with fornication to the list. It is very hard to find women in this time period. This might help. 2. Eric T.
    3. Hi! I'm new on this list and now wonder if I'm on the right one! My son's ancestor, Jesse EDWARDS was the second husband of Catherine BEEKMAN, daughter of Christopher BEEKMAN and Sarah COX Catherine was born in 1742 'Near Princeton'. Catherine's brother William BEEKMAN served in the Rev. War and indicated that he was born in 1755 in NJ 'about 2 miles from Germantown.' (From Vernon White's 'Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files,' pg 215.) Catherine BEEKMAN married John SKILLMAN in 1763. John died in 1776 in VA, and she married Jesse EDWARDS, born 1754-56. (No that's not a typo, she was 13 years older than Jesse.) Jesse EDWARDS served as a Cpl. and Pvt. in the 2nd NJ Regt. in the Rev. War. He served as a Cpl. in the 4th NJ Regt. He also served as a Pvt. in Ogden's NJ Regt. (This is acording to Vernon White's Index to Rev. War Service Records, pg 847. Should I have signed up for the county that Princeton, NJ was near in the year 1742? (Was that Middlesex Co.?) Or should I have signed up for the email list of the county that Princeton, NJ is now located in? I don't have a map for 1742, so I don't know where the county boundries were, or where Princeton was located at that time. I just have a 1790 map, and it isn't at all detailed. Can someone clarify this for me?? Thanks, Joanne at erictem@earthlink.net

Additional information from a poster cites the Civil Records for North Brunswick. Pliny F. Park is listed as "Commissioner of Appeal" for the years 1868, 1870 and 1872-1874. Can someone point me in the direction to more information, please. Thanks you. Audrey on Maui in the Hawaiian Isles

    1. Re: LDS On Line Correction
    2. You can submit changes to Ancestral File (the pedigree program) but not the International Genealogical Index (which has transcribed and submitted data). It takes a while for the AF changes to show up on the CD-ROMs because of its release schedule, but people are strongly encouraged to update/add material to it. The LDS web site offers both programs. ---Robin www.rootsweb.com/~njunion

    3. Harman and all, I can certainly testify to errors being present in the AF, local computers and I'm sure, online, too. There are some really glaring ones in my family that have been added to the LDS info. And someone who guessed at some dates on some family members and sent that in. He guessed wrong, of course! So, always check things out and use caution! Joyce Franke

    3. Glenn -- thanks for posting URL for the LDS site. I checked out a few names and it is fascinating, and they are to be commended for putting it all on the internet. But it is also time for a serious caution note: if we are not VERY careful, what will be accomplished is that it will result in some very erroneous materials being more readily available. I hope everyone reads the note that LDS includes on the pages that "The information has not been verified against any official records. Since the information in Ancestral File is contributed, it is the responsibility of those who use the file to verify its accuracy." Harman
